Ep.983: About Technology - ’Smart crib’ aims to help rockabye baby

As every new parent knows, sleep can go out the window after the arrival of a newborn.

That was certainly the case for parents Radhika and Bharath Patil, who seeking relief for their own disrupted sleep patterns, put their electronic engineering backgrounds together to create a "smart crib".

Their crib, powered by artificial intelligence, combines a baby monitor, rocker, bassinet and crib in one.

"It’s not the amount of work around the baby that tires the parents, it’s the lack of sleep," Radhika Patil, Cradlewise chief executive, told Reuters in an interview.

Early detection is key, she said, adding that the sooner parents can detect the baby waking up, the easier it is to get the child to fall back asleep.

"Once you put the baby in, the crib takes care of everything. That’s the aim," Bharath Patil said.

Next step for touch-free payments? Amazon launches palm scanner

Amazon has announced a new payment system for real-world shops which uses a simple wave of the hand.

Its new Amazon One scanner registers an image of the user’s palm, letting them pay by hovering their hand in mid-air "for about a second or so", it says.

Palm scanners are not a brand-new technology, and there are already some commercially available solutions.

"Palm-based identification is based on capturing the vein patterns of the palm," explains Dr Basel Halak of the Electronics and Computer Science School at the University of Southampton.

"These patterns are different for each finger and for each person, and as they are hidden underneath the skin’s surface, forgery is extremely difficult."

The level of security was roughly similar to a fingerprint scan, but could be used at a distance of a few inches, making it much more practical.

Ep.982: Why Surge Prices Make Us So Mad

When Bruce Springsteen decided to do a run of shows at a Broadway theater with fewer than a thousand seats, he appeared to reject the laws of economics — or at least what would seem to be in his financial best interest.

He limited ticket prices to $75 to $850 and has been allocating them through a lottery that includes identity verification. His goal was to prevent scalping. Yet not everyone who sought tickets got them at those prices. The tickets that have leaked onto the open market on StubHub ranged in one recent search from $1,200 to $9,999.

It sure looks as if Springsteen left a great deal of money on the table and impeded the laws of the marketplace. After all, some people got tickets for $75 for which others were willing to pay four figures.

But the strategy may be less irrational than the raw numbers suggest. And understanding the hidden logic behind concert pricing — or how the Home Depot responds to a hurricane, or even how your neighborhood restaurant handles the Valentine’s Day crunch — can provide a guide to solving some of society’s biggest problems while satisfying people’s deep need for a sense of fairness.

Understanding this logic can also win you a Nobel. At least, it did recently for the University of Chicago economist Richard H. Thaler, who was honored for work that includes study of what constitutes fairness in markets. He has shown that the simplistic Economics 101 version of how markets work — in which a seller raises prices however much it takes to match demand — can be inefficient, or offend people’s moral sensibilities, or both.

Technology is making “variable” or “dynamic” pricing — the same strategies that ensure airplane seats, hotel rooms or Uber cars are almost always available if you’re willing to pay the price — more plausible in areas with huge social consequences.

Dynamic pricing of electricity could help bring down pollution, reduce energy costs and make renewable energy more viable. Constantly adjusting prices for access to highways and congested downtowns could make traffic jams, with all the resulting wasted time and excess emissions, a thing of the past. Any sector where supplies tend to be fixed but demand fluctuates — the water supply, health care — would seem like prime candidates for variable pricing.

But technologists, entrepreneurs and regulators who would go down this path first need to learn a few lessons from Thaler — and Springsteen.

“A good rule of thumb is we shouldn’t impose a set of rules that will create moral outrage, even if that moral outrage seems stupid to economists,” Thaler said.

Ep.981: About Nature - Key to butterfly climate survival may be colour coded

A butterfly’s ability to absorb or reflect heat from the sun with its wings could be a matter of life and death in a warming world, according to British research published Thursday calling for gardens, parks and farms to host shady, cooling-off spots.

While all butterflies are ectotherms - they cannot generate their own body heat - the ability to regulate temperature varies significantly, researchers said.

The study found that bigger, pale-coloured butterflies, like the Large White or Brimstone species, are better at thermoregulation because they can angle their wings to reflect the sun’s heat either away from them or onto their bodies to attain the right temperature.

Gray parrots separated at zoo after swearing a blue streak

A British zoo has had to separate five foul-mouthed parrots who keepers say were encouraging each other to swear.

Billy, Eric, Tyson, Jade and Elsie joined Lincolnshire Wildlife Centre’s colony of 200 gray parrots in August, and soon revealed a penchant for blue language.

"We are quite used to parrots swearing, but we’ve never had five at the same time," said the zoo’s chief executive, Steve Nichols. "Most parrots clam up outside, but for some reason these five relish it." Nichols said no visitors had complained about the parrots, and most found the situation funny.

Will chief prosecutor run in presidential election?

Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl, who has been engaged in a power struggle with Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae, has come under scrutiny recently as questions are being raised over whether he has ambitions to run in the next presidential election.

The increased attention on Yoon comes as he gave ambiguous answers during an annual audit of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office at the National Assembly, Thursday, when asked whether he would consider entering politics after his term as chief prosecutor expires. "I will think about how I can serve the nation and the public after my term is over," he answered.

Yoon was appointed as prosecutor general in July last year. His term expires in July next year, months before the presidential election takes place in March 2022. Yoon has been cited as a potential presidential runner for the opposition bloc in various opinion polls. In the survey conducted by Gallup Korea in August, he garnered support from about 20 percent of conservative voters in their 60s or older.

Welcome to 15mins.today the home of English shadowing. I'm your host Gavin, and this is InTense Episode 68. Well guys, we are almost done with conjunctions. We have done the first lot, which are coordinating conjunctions. Today we're going to be looking at the second part, correlative conjunctions, so these conjunctions also link similar words or word groups, but they are always used in pairs, so examples of them are the following:

    both.... and

    either.... or

    neither... nor

    not only.....but also

    whether....or

Of course you can just Google and find more examples.

So that is it, so they are conjunctions that always work in pairs. OK, so, “Both John andMary are happy today.” There you go, both....and, those are our correlative conjunctions.

So, easy peasy lemon squeezy as they say, let's look at our examples.

Did both John and James finish the work? Yes, both John and James finished the work.

Did both John and James finish the work? No, neither John nor James finished the work.

Are neither apples nor pears in season now? Yes, neither apples nor pears are in season now.

Are neither apples nor pears in season now? No, both apples and pears are in season now.

Did either Susan or Jane finish the report? Yes, Susan finished the report.

Did either Susan or Jane finish the report? No, neither Susan nor Jane finished. The report

Is not only Mary but also John from England? Yes, not only Mary but also John are from England.

Is not only Mary, but also John from England? No, neither Mary nor John are from England.

Was Peter's presentation as good as mine? Yes, his presentation was as good as yours.

Was Peter's presentation as good as mine? No, his presentation was not as good as yours.

Do you have to do it whether you like it or not? Yes, I have to do it whether I like to or not.

Do you have to do it whether you like it or not? No, I don't have to do it.

Would you rather go to work than stay at home? Yes, I would rather stay at home than go to work.

Would you rather stay at home than go to work? No, I would not rather stay at home than go to work.

Well, there you go guys. Some examples of correlative conjunctions. Now, I mentioned some previously in the first part, but again, just Google correlative conjunctions and you can find many examples of them. There are not hundreds of them, but they are a few so maybe 20, I suggest maybe around there. The list I looked at was about 13 to 15 and I did some of them in the textbook I had, they only mentioned 5. So again, search online, Google correlative conjunctions and you will find many more examples. I hope that helps, again, don't panic about it, just know that those are conjunctions, and I will catch you in the next episode. Bye bye!

The story goes that Kamala has a Taiwanese-American friend Su Jung-Li who helped her come up with a Chinese name when she asked for advice on how to win over a Chinese-dominated population. According to reports, Kamala didn’t like the word “Li” meaning beauty initially, because she wanted people to associate with her intelligence and not her beauty.

Ep.979: It Turns Out Money Can Buy (Some) Happiness美國研究:花錢買時間 讓你覺得更幸福

It’s a question central to daily life: Do you spend money to save time or spend time to save money? Well, if happiness is the goal, you might consider opening that wallet.
That’s the takeaway of a study, published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, whose findings suggest that spending money to save time may reduce stress about the limited time in the day, thereby improving happiness.
“People who spent money to buy themselves time, such as by outsourcing disliked tasks, reported greater overall life satisfaction,” said Ashley Whillans, an assistant professor at the Harvard Business School and lead author of the study, which was based on a series of surveys from several countries. Researchers did not see the same effect when people used money for material goods.
In one round, Whillans and her colleagues surveyed nearly 4,500 people in the United States, Denmark, Canada and the Netherlands on well-being and timesaving purchases, such as ordering takeout food, taking a cab, hiring household help or paying someone to run an errand. In another round, using a broader definition of such purchases, they surveyed about 1,800 other Americans.
About 28 percent of those in the first round and half in the second reported spending money to save time. In both cases, those who made such purchases reported greater life satisfaction than those who did not.
And it didn’t matter if they were rich or poor: People benefited from buying time regardless of where they fell on the income spectrum. (The authors note, though, that may not hold true for the poorest of the poor.)
The surveys established a link between buying time and happiness, but the researchers wanted to see whether one causes the other.
So they conducted an experiment with a few dozen Canadians. First, they provided the participants with $40 on two consecutive weekends to spend, as directed, on either timesaving purchases or material purchases, like board games, fancy wine or clothes. Then, they asked the participants their mood at the end of the day.
As the researchers predicted, spending money to save time appeared to reduce time-related stress and increase well-being, while spending on material goods did not have the same effect.

Ep.978: In Wake of Recent India-China Conflict,U.S. Sees Opportunity
Weeks after India and China engaged in their deadliest border clash in decades, the sight of an American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier entering the Bay of Bengal drew attention across the region.
The carrier, the USS Nimitz, and its strike group deployed to the area in mid-July to conduct an exercise with the Indian Navy in pursuit of a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” according to a statement by the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet, whose headquarters are in Japan. But as tensions soar between India and China, two nuclear-armed neighbors, the joint operation took on a greater significance.
“It was symbolic,” said Tanvi Madan, the director of the India Project at the Brookings Institution. “It’s also signaling to China and others that the U.S. is standing by India.”
As the rivalry between India and China intensifies, the United States and India have taken their shared anger toward Beijing and forged stronger diplomatic and military ties that could alter the balance of power in the region.
“Both the U.S. and India have recognized the importance of the other,” said Nisha Biswal, an assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian affairs during the Obama administration. “It’s not a surprise that the Indians are looking for like-minded strategic and security partners.”
But some worry that the Trump administration is turning a blind eye to India’s rights abuses against Muslims under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, prioritizing military and geopolitical alliances over all else.
“They are warming relations under the same authoritarian banner,” said Wasim Dar, an activist in the disputed territory of Kashmir. “They’re prioritizing military, or hegemony, over any kind of human rights or political freedom.”
India and China have engaged in increasing aggression in recent months.
“Nobody’s backing down. They’re going to go through the winter like this,” said Vikram Singh, senior adviser to the Asia program at the U.S. Institute of Peace. “Now you’ve got a situation where there’s a whole bunch more flash points at a tactical level.”
Human rights experts say it is troubling that the United States talks so strongly about human rights abuses in China but is willing to engage in deeper diplomatic and strategic ties with India, where similar situations are occurring.
    “It’s basically hypocrisy,” Dar said.

Ep.977: Typhoonless year brings water shortage in fall/winter
Most years, Taiwan is hit by typhoons during the summer and fall, but we have yet to see a typhoon this year. This unusual situation has put pressure on water supply levels in reservoirs around Taiwan.
Due to global warming, the typhoons generated in the Pacific Ocean this year have all moved northward, bypassing Taiwan. Although successive fronts and afternoon showers have brought rainfall, it was only fragmented, covering limited areas and did little to replenish reservoirs. As a result, the reservoir storage this year is lower than in previous years.
According to the Water Resource Agency, as of 2pm yesterday, the Shihmen Reservoir’s water storage was 44 percent of capacity, the Feicuei Reservoir’s was 62.3 percent and the Zengwen Reservoir’s was 31.3 percent. Two of the three major water reservoirs have less than 50 percent of their water storage capacity.
In order to prepare for demand for water next year, the government has decided to implement three measures to control water usage. Firstly, starting from last Wednesday, night water pressure in the Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli areas was to be lowered from 11pm through to 5am the following day. Secondly, the irrigation of some areas of Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli was to be suspended, and farmers affected by the measures will receive government compensation. Thirdly, the Ministry of Economic Affairs is setting up a central drought response center to better respond to the crisis and to distribute water resources according to needs. Taiwanese are advised to take water-saving measures.

Ep.976: Journalists Are Leaving the Internet for Your Inbox

Casey Newton recently announced that he was leaving The Verge, the website where he has covered the tech industry since 2013, to write a subscription newsletter hosted by Substack, a 3-year-old platform that is growing in popularity.
Newton is joining the ranks of journalists who have left the relative comfort of an established publication to try their luck at Substack.
Newton, 40, said in an interview that he would start his newsletter, Platformer, next month. The time was right to go solo, he added, because of the changing relationship between readers and media outlets.
“You might follow a publication,” Newton said, “but it’s more likely you care about an individual reporter or writer or YouTuber or podcaster. People are increasingly willing to pay to support those people.”
Most Substack writers offer a mix of paid and free email newsletters. They make money through subscriptions, not ads. Writers own their newsletters, and the platform takes a 10% cut. Substack also offers a legal defense service to writers of paid newsletters in the United States.
Hamish McKenzie, one of the platform’s founders, said Substack writers could make $100,000 a year if they bring in “a couple thousand people” who spend $5 a month on a subscription. “It’s not easy — it takes time, dedication and care — but it’s more doable than ever,” he wrote in his own Substack newsletter.
The platform appeals to some journalists partly because the news media business has been in steady decline. From 2004 to 2019, roughly half of all U.S. newspaper jobs were eliminated, according to a University of North Carolina study, and more than 30,000 journalists in the country have been laid off or furloughed or had their pay reduced during the coronavirus pandemic.
The most popular paid Substack offering is The Dispatch, a conservative newsletter started last year by Steve Hayes, former editor-in-chief of The Weekly Standard, along with Jonah Goldberg, a former editor at National Review, and Toby Stock, a former executive at the American Enterprise Institute. With more than a dozen employees, The Dispatch has nearly 100,000 subscribers, almost 18,000 paid, and is close to pulling in $2 million in first-year revenue, most of it derived from Substack subscriptions, Hayes said.
