Diane Gilman continues her Breast Cancer Awareness Month Specials, sitting down with breast cancer survivor and awareness advocate, Trish Doolan. Trish's journey is marked by resilience, determination, and a mission to empower women to take control of their health.
Trish is a cancer survivor who underwent a staggering 11 surgeries, including a double mastectomy, due to her breast cancer. She was diagnosed at the age of 56. She discovered that she carries the BRCA gene, a gene associated with an increased risk of cancer. During her treatment Trish realized she could help other women avoid going through this by advocating for genetic testing for all women once they turn 21.
Trish’s DiagnosisTrish's journey began when she felt a mysterious pain around her ribs and discovered a lump. With the backdrop of the COVID pandemic, the waiting list for medical checks became excruciatingly long. Despite initial doubts from her doctor, Trish's insistence led to further investigation. After months of uncertainty, she was finally diagnosed with breast cancer. She was told her cancer was triple negative which is aggressive and often associated with the BRCA gene.
Diane mentions that there are over 200 types of breast cancer, some genetic and some not, highlighting the importance of everyone performing regular checks.
Positive Attitude in the Face of AdversityWhen Trish faced her first chemo treatment, she brought a positive attitude. She looked for the silver lining, listening to music, singing, and dancing to make the experience more bearable. Diane highlights the importance of such positivity in navigating the challenging journey of cancer.
Trish's battle included a remarkable 11 surgeries, each requiring its own set of rituals and courage. From double mastectomy to lymph node removal, each procedure was a step towards her recovery.
Trish’s Words of WisdomWhile battling cancer, Trish realized the importance of access to genetic testing for everyone. She's working on a bill to make genetic testing available to all women over 21, helping them understand and address cancer risks early.
Trish encourages women to find their tribe, get tested together, and support one another, regardless of the results. Diane adds her advice, stressing the need for immediate action if you suspect a problem.
Diane says the goal is not to scare but to educate. Breast cancer is not a death sentence; it's a call to action. Diane and Trish's conversation shines a light on the importance of early detection, positivity, and support in the face of adversity.

In this episode of the Too Young To Be Old podcast, Diane kicks off the Breast Cancer Awareness Month series where there will be extra episodes out every Thursday in October. In this episode Diane takes center stage to share her deeply personal breast cancer journey and the lessons she's learned along the way.
A Survivor's StoryDiane begins by acknowledging that some have perceived her previous discussions about breast cancer as glamorizing the experience. She notes that she has experienced a lot of negatives from cancer, from losing her husband to the disease to the long term health issues she has faced since having cancer herself. But she doesn’t see the value in dwelling on all that she’s lost when she learned so much about herself during her experience with breast cancer.
Time: The Most Precious CommodityThrough her cancer experience, Diane learned that time is her most valuable asset. She found that her illness forced her to reevaluate her life and prioritize spreading hope, joy, and light.
A Profound RebirthDiane reflects on how cancer served as a catalyst for a profound rebirth in her life. It forced her to confront her own mortality, prompting her to take stock of her past and her future. She discovered an overwhelming appreciation for life, realizing that being alive is a privilege she might not have fully recognized without cancer.
Toxicity and AwarenessIn a moment of introspection, Diane recognizes that her breast cancer was born out of a series of toxic elements in her life, including toxic relationships in the years leading up to her diagnosis.
Cancer: The Great Teacher and LevelerDiane reflects on how cancer served as an equalizer and a teacher. Before her diagnosis, she was accustomed to living in an ivory tower due to her social status and work in fashion and television. Cancer forced her to confront the disconnection between her psyche, brain, and soul and the body she found herself in.
A Journey of CompassionOne of the most significant changes in Diane's perspective during her cancer journey was her newfound desire to bring happiness to those around her. She describes how she aimed to make the days of the hospital staff and those around her a bit brighter during her treatments.
Respecting the ProcessDiane shares her approach to treatment, emphasizing the importance of respecting chemotherapy and radiation for the intense treatments they are. She recalls her lack of pain during treatment and attributes it to not being fully present in her body during those moments. She says she felt like she was watching herself from afar the entire time.
A Spiritual ExperienceThough Diane doesn't sugarcoat her experience with breast cancer, she describes it as a deeply spiritual journey. Facing her mortality, she believes, brought out profound spiritual insights and courage, allowing her to live in the present moment.
Building a Support NetworkDiane highlights the importance of building a strong support network, for her she was surrounded by great friends and women from her sisterhood during cancer treatment. Surrounding yourself with those who are fully committed to your well-being can make a significant difference.
Final ThoughtsDiane Gilman emphasizes the importance of honoring your body, listening to test results, attending mammograms, and seeking early treatment. She offers hope to those facing a tough diagnosis, reminding them that very few women today die from breast cancer, and emerging from it can lead to a stronger, more appreciative, and possibly happier life. In her parting words, Diane encourages everyone to turn the worst moments in life into the very best.

Together with host Diane, they explore the keys to being well enough to enjoy your third act in life and defy societal expectations surrounding aging.
The Power of Integrative WellnessTK Mitchell starts by emphasizing the need to experience love, joy, and lead a purpose-fulfilling life. She stresses the importance of integrative wellness and reveals that mindset is central to this. Letting go of perfectionism and control, along with cultivating confidence, are vital components.
Challenging Societal PerceptionsDiane shares that she feels frustrated at times for not being able to do things as well as she used to. TK weighs in, pointing out how society often fails to appreciate age, leading women to internalize negative perceptions. She urges mature women to recognize that they are not done yet; this phase of life is a unique opportunity to align with passions and gain a perspective younger generations don't possess.
Unleashing the Potential of Baby BoomersDiane underscores the fact that Baby Boomers are the largest generation on Earth but are often silent. TK emphasizes that the experiences mature women have accumulated are assets that can be used to change the world. She shares her personal journey of transitioning from a public school teacher to her current role, driven by her mission to reshape society's views on aging.

Societal expectations can be daunting, leading some to disconnect from their inner child and withdraw from life's possibilities. Diane adds that embracing technology can be a game-changer for mature women, offering avenues to connect, stay informed, and entertained.
Taking Charge of WellnessTK and Diane speak about the importance of looking after your wellness. TK shares her experience of going through menopause and suddenly facing health issues like unexplained weight gain, elevated lipid levels, and osteopenia. Doctors dismissed these issues as part of aging, but TK sought help from a naturopath who identified multiple food allergies as the root cause. Through natural methods, she successfully reversed her health issues, including the bone density problems.
Mindset Transformation to GratitudeDiane emphasizes the importance of changing one's mindset to gratitude, especially in the face of health challenges. TK underscores the significance of living with gratitude and awareness.
Raising the Standard for AgingTK passionately advocates for raising the standard for aging, tackling mindset and community-building to help women shed negative attitudes towards aging. She envisions a world where the negativity surrounding aging can be transformed for the better.

The Secret Sauce of Sustainable LivingTK outlines her core life principals: nourishing the body, regular fitness, sleep, good relationships, a comfortable living space, giving back to society, and pursuing interests and passions. However, she emphasizes that these are not sustainable without the secret sauce: love and compassion, thoughts and words, trust and belief, courage and passion, integrity, faith, and enthusiasm.
Intentional LivingDiane calls this holistic approach to life "intentional living," encapsulating the essence of living life to the fullest, especially during the third act.

Donna Edman is the author of "The Women of Wisdom: Honoring the Grace, Strength, and Beauty”, a book showing the natural, unfiltered beauty of women over 50. Donna is on a mission to show women over 50 that they are beautiful to break down the limited view of beauty society currently holds.
AI, Photoshop, and the Perception of BeautyThe conversation begins by delving into the influence of AI and Photoshop on society's perception of beauty. Diane references a recent internet sensation involving Kim Kardashian, where an unedited photo was released and it caused quite the stir. In a world that perpetually demands women to maintain an idealized sense of perfection, it's crucial to challenge conventional beauty norms.
What Inspired the Book on Natural BeautyDonna shares the inspiration behind her book that celebrates the natural beauty of women over 50. Her goal was to pay homage to these women and capture the genuine joy that accompanies embracing one's authentic self. Diane admits feeling increasingly drawn into the allure of perfection often portrayed in edited photographs, underscoring the significance of authenticity.
Overcoming PerfectionismDonna reveals that her journey to create this project was long overdue. She speaks about internalizing the ideals of perfectionism from a young age, which subsequently inhibited her willingness to take risks such as starting the book. Eventually, she mustered the courage to start small, reaching out to just two women for assistance with the project. Despite her initial fears the project grew and to Donna’s surprise when she asked participants for help or advice they were actually honored to be asked, rather than judging her for not knowing.
Photography Tips for Natural BeautyDonna generously shares valuable photography insights, explaining her use of lighting techniques to enhance the subjects she photographs. She recommends positioning a light source directly in front of the subject for a flattering effect. Mastery of posing, lighting, and, most importantly, cultivating a sense of self-assuredness plays a pivotal role in capturing natural beauty in photographs.
Capturing Unposed MomentsDonna likes to capture unposed, spontaneous moments. She notes that these candid moments, where people are relaxed, engaged in conversation, or laughing, often result in the most authentic and captivating photographs.
The Process of the Natural Beauty ProjectDonna's motivation for embarking on this project stems from her belief that both young, attractive women and older, famous women have voices that are heard, but everyone else often goes unheard. She encouraged women to participate in her project with three conditions: candidly answer questions, embrace unedited photographs, and be over the age of 50. One of the thought-provoking questions she posed was, "What advice would you offer your 20-year-old self?" The responses were enlightening, emphasizing the importance of leaving a legacy grounded in values rather than appearances.
Embracing Your StyleDonna extends an invitation to listeners to discard the unrealistic images propagated by magazines and instead embrace their unique style. She urges women to create their own fashion inspirations. Diane expresses her gratitude to individuals like Donna for capturing the essence of regular, older women.
The Legacy ProjectDonna is currently in the process of curating her new book, "The Legacy Project," which will encompass both men and women, along with their cherished possessions and old photographs. In her words, "When we pass away, what remains are our possessions and old pictures." Donna intends to ascribe meaning to these remnants, weaving stories that reflect the essence of those who have left their mark on the world.

Amy elaborates on how Ozempic affects the body, including fat storage, muscle reduction, and leptin resistance. Diane notes that reality TV oversimplifies the complexities of achieving a healthy body.

In this episode, host Diane Gilman engages in a thought-provoking and vulnerable conversation with the remarkable Martha Bodyfelt, a dating and life coach who specializes in helping mature women navigate the challenges of dating through the innovative Mind Surgery Method.
Unveiling Limiting Beliefs
As Diane and Martha dive into the discussion, listeners are introduced to Martha's unique approach to dating for mature women. Diane candidly shares her own experiences as a self-proclaimed "worst dater," frequently drawn to the allure of bad boys. Martha explains the transformative program, the Mind Surgery Method. This method, developed by Cara Rice, is rooted in addressing subconscious beliefs and utilizing neuro-linguistic programming to rewire thought patterns.
Overcoming Challenges
Martha sees a lot of women who struggle with patterns of attracting emotionally unavailable partners and self-sabotage. She pinpoints a significant hurdle faced by her clients: hidden limiting beliefs. These internal scripts, sometimes passed down through generations or developed from personal experiences, manifest as detrimental thoughts such as "I am unworthy of love," "I am too old to date," or "relationships are unsafe."
The Mind Surgery Method
Martha elaborates on the Mind Surgery Method, which involves safely delving into the subconscious to dismantle these limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering, positive ones. Martha says that through her work she has seen three common mistakes in her client’s attitudes to dating:
Following the Crowd: Many mature women feel compelled to date simply because it's perceived as the norm.
Stagnant Dating Styles: Some women maintain a dating approach reminiscent of their younger years, failing to evolve with their personal growth.
Over-Reliance on Online Dating: Martha emphasizes the importance of diversifying one's dating strategies, much like maintaining a diverse investment portfolio rather than putting all your resources into a single avenue.
Defining What You Want
Diane confides her uncertainty about her dating desires, expressing a preference for companionship without the vulnerability of a deep relationship. Martha highlights the significance of clarity in dating intentions, a theme she frequently encounters among mature female clients. She warns against dating out of scarcity or societal pressure.
Navigating Obstacles
Martha delves into the major obstacles hindering women from finding fulfilling relationships, emphasizing the importance of clarity in one's dating objectives. Diane candidly addresses her apprehension, feeling too mature to endure heartbreak once again. Martha urges Diane to embrace her desires without reservation and build confidence in her decisions.
The Power of Attitude
Martha underscores the significance of attitude and mindset for success in dating beyond age 55. She dismantles the notion that location or age are the determining factors, emphasizing that attitude transformation often leads to either attracting quality partners or discovering contentment in other aspects of life. Martha reveals that mature daters often replace the importance of youthful sexuality with knowledge and self-awareness, resulting in newfound confidence.
Diane says that she recognizes that her own attitude had been the root of her dating challenges. For those seeking further guidance, Martha's contact information is provided, including her website marthabodyfelt.com and her free guide titled "Where to Start If You Haven't Dated in Years or Decades."

In this episode of Too Young To Be Old, host Diane Gilman speaks with Suzanne Blons, the renowned makeup artist, model, and founder of thebeautyshaman.com. Suzanne's journey from being a Revlon's Charlie Girl in the 80s to becoming a makeup artist and brand ambassador has provided her with a unique perspective on beauty, especially for those over 50. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking valuable insights into enhancing their beauty routines.
From Model to Makeup Artist
Suzanne Blons, a familiar face from her days as a model and Revlon's Charlie Girl, now shares her expertise with the world as a makeup artist and guide.
Suzanne transitioned from being in front of the camera to behind it herself due to the toxic environment of the modeling industry. She didn't do well with the constant pressure to look a certain way as a model and felt like there were always unrealistic expectations.
Behind the Camera: Supporting Beauty
Suzanne's love for the vibrant atmosphere on set led her to become a makeup artist. Her desire to empower and enhance the beauty of those behind the camera became her driving force. With a client list including influential figures like Jesse Jackson, Larry King, and Arianna Huffington, Suzanne's journey is nothing short of inspiring.
Embracing Age
Diane, who started her own TV career in her 40s, and Suzanne discuss the value of embracing age in the beauty industry. They address the societal challenges faced by women over 50, including a shocking incident where a CEO fired a female journalist simply because she turned 50. This incident ignited Suzanne's mission to become a cheerleader for older women, valuing their beauty and experience.
Makeup Tips for Enhancing Beauty
Suzanne shares valuable makeup tips for older women, emphasizing the importance of embracing one's natural beauty. Before going on camera, she suggests using an oil-soluble vitamin C serum (look for tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate or THDA vitamin C) and hyaluronic acid for a radiant look.
She advises using a dewy, light-to-medium coverage foundation and avoiding heavy matte foundations. Only use a very light touch of translucent powder- Suzanne recommends Ben Nye or Laura Mercier translucent powder.
Suzanne also shares a tip for dealing with harsh lighting. She likes to put a “cosmetic peach” film over her or her client’s ring lights to reduce harshness. Suzanne also recommends avoiding shooting in daylight as it is not flattering to aging skin.
The Botox Dilemma
Diane candidly discusses her experiences with Botox and how it has affected her perspective on aging in the TV industry. Suzanne agrees that finding a doctor who prioritizes individual well-being over excessive treatments is essential, as the pursuit of natural beauty can sometimes lead to overcorrection.
Making Bold Choices
Diane dives into the bold choice of wearing red lipstick as an older woman. Suzanne encourages embracing one's personality and flair while experimenting with makeup choices. She outlines the fine line between creative expression and over-the-top, highlighting the importance of balance.
Beauty Trends and Customization
Suzanne's approach to beauty trends involves modification to suit individual preferences. She advises toning down trends to align with personal style, if necessary. As the conversation progresses, Suzanne imparts practical tips, like using a dry matte lipstick to prevent bleeding around the lips and incorporating subtle adjustments to adapt to evolving trends.
