  • 31. Paranormal Special: Life After Loss- Extraordinary Encounters with Departed Loved Ones with Mary Rivera

In today's episode, host Diane Gilman is joined by Mary Rivera as part of our November paranormal series. Mary and Diane will share two heart-wrenching stories about having the chance to say goodbye to their loved ones one last time.

It's time to dive into the unexplainable, the touching, and the life-affirming as they explore their extraordinary experiences with the paranormal.

    Mary's Story: A Heartfelt Farewell

Mary Rivera opens up about a profoundly moving experience from her teenage years. At the age of 13, she lost her beloved father. Mary shares the painful memory which plunged her into a deep depression. However, as she was struggling to keep going her father came back to see her. He appeared in her room and told her she needed to go on and that she had so much going for her.

But what makes her story truly remarkable is that her friend was with her and witnessed the same inexplicable phenomenon she did, validating her experience.

Diane's Story: A Reunion with Her Soul Mate

Diane Gilman recounts the heart-wrenching tale of losing her soul mate at the age of 52, someone who had been her anchor, her foundation, and her biggest cheerleader for two decades. She reflects on her struggles as a caregiver during his terminal battle with cancer and the profound grief that followed his passing. But, against all odds, Diane was granted a reunion with her beloved soul mate, a moment of relief that changed her perspective on life.

    Parallel Paths to Healing

Though Mary and Diane's stories are unique in their own ways, they both found the experience of reconnecting with their loved ones to be life-affirming. These encounters not only provided closure but also helped them to move forward with their lives.

Diane reflects on the approaching Thanksgiving and the shift in her perspective, from noticing the absence of loved ones to celebrating their enduring presence. Both Mary and Diane have come to realize that these extraordinary experiences have made them more fulfilled and grateful for life.

  • 30. Empowering Women's Health Beyond Menopause: Expert Insights on Hormone Replacement with Christine Farrell

In this enlightening episode host Diane Gilman is joined by health professional, Christine Farrell to delve deep into the world of women's health, menopause, and hormone replacement therapy. Christine specializes in hormone imbalances and hormone replacement. Together, they explore the myths and realities surrounding menopause and discuss how women can reclaim their vitality and well-being as they age.

Bioidentical Hormones vs. Traditional Hormone Replacement

Christine highlights the critical difference between bioidentical hormones and traditional hormone replacement. Bioidenticals are meticulously crafted to mimic the human molecular structure, providing a safer and more effective solution. In contrast, regular hormones can sometimes leave harmful byproducts in the body.

    Is Soy Safe?

Christine dispels the fear surrounding soy, as long as it is non-GMO soy, and mentions its potential benefits for women during menopause. Drawing comparisons to the experiences of women in East Asian countries, the discussion delves into the role of soy in promoting overall well-being.

The Health Benefits of Hormone Replacement

Shedding light on significant statistics, Christine reveals a 23% drop in breast cancer risk for women who undertake hormone replacement therapy during the first decade of menopause. Additionally, there's a 40% decrease in mortality from breast cancer and a 30% decrease in overall mortality among women on hormone therapy.

The Complex Relationship Between Hormones and Cancer

The conversation delves into the complex topic of hormone replacement and its association with estrogen-positive cancers. While the US traditionally follows a conservative approach, some regions view hormone replacement as a holistic approach to supplement overall health and help women fight cancer more effectively.

Diane shares her personal experience and the belief that her hormone use may have caused her breast cancer. Christine disputes this notion, asserting that it isn't necessarily true, and hormone therapy can be judiciously used to improve overall well-being.

    Perimenopause: The Often Overlooked Phase

Christine emphasizes the importance of acknowledging perimenopause, which can span 15 years. When symptoms arise, it's the ideal time to assess hormone levels and initiate treatment. The first ten years of true menopause represent a "sweet spot" for hormone therapy.

    The Evolution of Menopause Treatment

Christine discusses the advancements in menopause treatment, including the availability of bioidentical hormones in various forms. She specifically highlights transdermal patches as a low-risk option with fewer side effects and minimal impact on the body.

Embracing Hormone Therapy as a Long-Term Solution

Christine emphasizes that the judicious use of hormone therapy throughout one's life is starting to be accepted in the medical community. She mentions Phil Cyrell's belief that women should continue hormone therapy until they pass away, as research indicates it can lead to longer, healthier lives with reduced disease and breast cancer risk.

    Women's Health Deserves More Attention

The episode concludes with a discussion on the disparities in research and attention given to women's health compared to men's health. Diane and Christine hope for a brighter future where women's health, including hormone replacement, receives the recognition and care it truly deserves.

  • 29. Paranormal Special: Journey Through the Unexplained- An Otherworldly Encounter with Kevin & Vicky

In today's episode, which is a part of our Paranormal Series every Thursday in November, we explore an extraordinary encounter with the unexplained. Join us as Diane invites Kevin and Vicky, 2 very grounded people with an extraordinary tale of the paranormal, to share their experience.

    We Are Not Alone

Before we delve into Kevin and Vicky's story, Diane sets the stage by reminding us that we are not alone in this vast universe. She references iconic incidents like Roswell and Area 51, and highlights the startling statistic that UFO sightings have seen a staggering 650% increase.

    Kevin and Vicky’s Story

Kevin shares their extraordinary encounter. The couple was on a road trip through Florida with another couple, their journey taking them into the heart of an impending storm, an unusually dark and foreboding one.

As they continued their journey, all passengers noticed the sky darkening to an extent they had never witnessed before. They experience some peculiar things like police cars but no police, a strange man in a van with some sort of fluorescent material in a barrel and driving INTO a rainbow.

Then as suddenly as it had all started, it all stopped and the weather was clear again.

    A Shared Experience

Remarkably, after the event, all four passengers in the car recounted the same inexplicable experience. Scientifically, it was implausible to drive into a rainbow, as Kevin later researched. He emphasizes the profound sense that time had become irrelevant during their journey through the rainbow.

  • 28. Eat Your Way Back to Health with Delicious Foods Instead of Chemicals and Drugs with Tsao Lin Moy

In this episode your host, the Queen of Jeans, Diane Gilman, chats to Tsao Lin Moy, a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner with a masters in Chinese medicine. Together, they delve into a holistic approach to menopause and general wellness, focusing on the power of food as medicine.

    Menopause Awareness Month

This episode coincides with Menopause Awareness Month. Diane shares her own experience with menopause, highlighting the challenging symptoms she endured, such as hot flashes and cramps as well as problems with her hair, skin and sleep.

Menopause as a Transition, Not a Disease

Tsao Lin Moy explains that the Western perspective often treats menopause as a disease rather than a natural life transition, much like puberty. She emphasizes that societal beauty standards and a one-size-fits-all approach to women's health play a significant role in the mistreatment of menopause. Physicians often resort to drugs and hormones rather than considering the holistic approach that includes dietary changes.

    Shifting the Mindset

The conversation shifts to mindset and the mind-body connection. Tsao emphasizes the importance of working with your body instead of against it. Stress, often associated with aging, leads to elevated cortisol levels, resulting in weight gain, particularly around the waist.

    Understanding Body Changes

Metabolism tends to slow down as women age due to decreasing estrogen levels, contributing to weight gain around the waist. Tsao recommends a predominantly plant-based diet with a small amount of animal protein.

Tsao explains that a balanced, mostly plant-based diet is essential. She stresses the importance of educating yourself about food and nutrition.

    Cravings and the Brain

Diane discusses cravings for creamy, fatty foods like cheesecake and cream cheese. Tsao explains that these cravings trigger brain signals similar to those experienced during breastfeeding. Our bodies crave what they need, and satisfying these cravings with healthier options, such as avocados, can be more beneficial.

The Role of a Healthy Microbiome

Tsao shares her experience of addressing an unhealthy microbiome, which can lead to addiction-like behaviors. She explains how probiotics, in both supplement and food form, can help restore gut health and reduce inflammation. In food you can get probiotics from fermented ginger beer, kombucha, pickled foods, sauerkraut and miso.

Tsao recommends using supplements alongside food sources for quicker results in balancing gut flora. She notes that previous antibiotic use can disrupt gut flora, contributing to imbalances. She suggests getting a supplement with 8-10 different strains of probiotic and 50-80 billion live cultures.

    Eating Habits and Digestive Waves

The discussion touches on the various cycles in the body and how healthcare often treats the body as static. Tsao emphasizes the importance of working with the body's natural rhythms and waves for optimal wellness.

Tips for Wellness and Balanced Eating

Tsao offers valuable tips for holistic wellness, including the importance of high-quality, organic foods and avoiding processed foods. She encourages viewing food choices as a means of nourishment, rather than solely relying on supplements and shakes.

The Holistic Approach to Health for Women Over 50

Tsao Lin Moy's number one piece of advice for women over 50 is to embrace whole foods, avoid artificial and diet products, and prioritize nutrient-rich choices. Diane emphasizes finding joy and creativity in producing good, nourishing food.

  • 26. Revitalizing Your Self Esteem Over 50 with Author Clarissa Burt

Diane Gilman chats with the remarkable Clarissa Burt, author of "The Self Esteem Regime." A former model, actress, and TV personality, Clarissa's journey exemplifies the idea that life doesn't end at 50. She talks about the main takeaways from her book, her career, how to look after yourself naturally and how she won Survivor Italy when she was 52.

    The Self Esteem Battle

At 64 years young, Clarissa reflects on her life and how self-esteem played a crucial role. She shares that she was never taught how to have self-esteem. Her mother and grandmother struggled with their self-esteem despite their beauty, and her mother dealt with a toxic relationship with an alcoholic.

    A Career Evolution

Clarissa began her career in fashion at the age of 19. Initially, she didn't believe she was pretty enough to be a model, but she gave it a go and succeeded. With a 30-year career modeling in Europe, she graced 250 magazine covers and walked almost every runway. But, she learned that as she grew, she had to keep reinventing herself. She transitioned from modeling to acting and starred in various films in Italy. Later, she ventured into TV production and even had her own products on QVC in Italy, based on her own creations.

    Shared Self-Esteem Struggles

Diane shares her own self-esteem challenges, growing up in California surrounded by tanned, blonde individuals while having freckles and red hair. She could relate to the struggles women face in their quest for self-esteem.

    Self-Esteem and Hair Care

Diane discusses her own struggle with self-esteem related to her white hair, noting that it's challenging to find experts who understand how to work with it. Clarissa shares her personal experience of losing her hair during the COVID-19 pandemic and how she found essential oils that helped her regrow her hair. She mixed eight different oils and plans to bring her hair regrowth solution to the market. She views Diane's hair concerns as an opportunity to create a product that fills a gap in the market and emphasizes the power of the internet for such ventures.

    Pillars of Wisdom for Self-Esteem

Diane and Clarissa discuss the four pillars of self-esteem for women over 50:

    1. Look Good: Taking care of your appearance, staying hydrated, using supplements, practicing good skincare, enjoying healthy teas, and using colors that complement your complexion.
    2. Feel Good: Focusing on diet, exercise, wellness, weight-bearing exercises, spending time in nature, and avoiding cosmetics with toxins.
    3. Be Good: Devoting time for self-care and self-improvement.
    4. Greater Good: Making others feel good through acts of kindness, volunteering, paying it forward, and striving to be a better person every day.

Clarissa highlights that this age is a glorious time to take care of yourself. She notes it can be difficult though, sharing her concern about the number of chemicals women expose themselves to daily through skincare products.

    Homemade Cosmetics and Natural Alternatives

Clarissa either makes her own cosmetics at home or uses non-toxic alternatives. She recommends finding non-toxic cosmetics on ewg.org. She also points out that everything applied to the skin is absorbed into the body. For instance, she suggests using cocoa powder and arrowroot to create a natural tan-colored gel.

    Winning Survivor

At the age of 52, Clarissa achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Italian celebrity Survivor TV show, outlasting all of the younger contestants. She played the role of everyone’s aunt on the show.

  • 25. How To Make The Most Of The Life You Survived For If You Had Cancer With Naturopathic Doctor Dr Shani Fox

In this episode host Diane Gilman speaks to Dr Shani, a naturopathic doctor who helps cancer survivors make the most of their lives after undergoing treatment. Dr Shani's book, "Cancer Survivors Fear First Aid Kit," is a comprehensive guide to help cancer survivors deal with the most common side effect of cancer – fear.

Understanding the Most Common Side Effect of Cancer

Dr Shani explains that cancer survivors often undergo treatment without having the time to process what has happened to them. They celebrate their recovery and are then left without a long-term care plan. Fear becomes the most common side effect that affects 70% of people who have survived cancer.

    The Fear First Aid Kit

Dr Shani's "Fear First Aid Kit" is designed to help cancer survivors regain their power by coming back to the present moment and remembering what is true. By taking back their power, survivors can create their lives and prevent future recurrences of cancer.

Taking Back Your Power After Cancer

Diane shares that after her cancer treatment, she felt exposed and had a hard time with the aftercare drugs. Dr Shani explains that the medical system mainly revolves around drugs and surgery, which aren't appropriate for everyone. Instead, there are many things that people can do to live rather than just survive. Moderate exercise, such as walking for 150 minutes per week, reduces the chance of a recurrence.

Dr Shani helps people take back their power to create their lives. Diane shares that after surviving cancer, she eliminated all toxicity from her life and filled the extra time with joy and light. Dr Shani encourages cancer survivors to remember that their bodies may get cancer, but their souls do not.

    The Great Teacher and Motivator

Diane calls cancer the great teacher and motivator, and Dr Shani explains how she helps her patients radiate the part of themselves that wants to heal. Dr Shani calls herself a "hand to hold" until people are thriving.

  • 24. Unlocking Wealth and Freedom: Commercial Real Estate Insights with Ben Reinberg

In this episode Diane Gilman has a fascinating conversation with Ben Reinberg, serial entrepreneur, founder and CEO of the Alliance Consolidated Group of Companies, host of the "I Own It" podcast, and expert in commercial real estate. He shares insights on creating wealth and personal freedom.

    Childhood Entrepreneurship

Ben's entrepreneurial spirit emerged at a young age. At just eight years old, he bought cigarettes for a dollar a pack at a drug store and sold them in bars for two dollars a pack, enjoying a 100% gain on his investment. This early experience shaped his mindset and approach to making money.

    Early Life in Chicago

Ben grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago, in a mixed-income neighborhood. His family always worked hard to make ends meet. Interestingly, this area had the highest number of bars per capita in the United States, which had a profound impact on his perspective.

    Adapting to Changing Markets

Ben highlights that 48% of commercial real estate is now deserted. His business has evolved to repurpose these vacant spaces. They no longer invest in commercial markets with many empty buildings; instead, they've observed changes in demand. Retail and office spaces are shrinking, while food services and medical facilities continue to thrive.

    Investing in Medical Real Estate

Recognizing the enduring demand for healthcare services, Ben's business ventured into medical real estate. He emphasizes, "The human body is never going out of style." By examining various health problems and market needs, they identify properties and businesses to invest in within the healthcare sector.

    Senior Living and Healthcare Facilities

Ben suggests that deserted commercial spaces could be repurposed for senior living, nursing homes, and healthcare facilities. This may necessitate rezoning by municipalities. Diane brings up Oak Street Health, an example of healthcare facilities for those aged 55 and above.

Diane points out the existence of high-value senior care homes for baby boomers. Ben notes that senior housing is continually growing, and while they haven't delved into it yet, it might be on their horizon.

    Preparing for Economic Changes

Ben anticipates a recession due to the impending $1.6 trillion in commercial real estate mortgages coming due. Banks are already preparing for this. He recommends conserving cash, as the value of money is currently low. Some banks may fail, and a recession might be officially declared.

    Benefits of Commercial Real Estate

Ben underscores the importance of hard assets like commercial real estate. Unlike stocks and bonds, commercial real estate allows you to physically inspect the buildings. It often offers substantial returns, with transparency being one of their core values.

Ben emphasizes the significance of valuing every penny invested by others. If you can't do this, you shouldn't be involved in investment.

    Ideal States for Retirement

Ben recommends several states for retirement from a commercial real estate perspective. These include:

    • Texas (Austin, Houston, and Fort Worth)
    • Tennessee (Nashville and Chattanooga)
    • Florida (Tampa and Orlando)
    • The Carolinas (Charleston, Charlotte, and Asheville)
    • Nevada (Reno and Las Vegas)
    • New Mexico
    • Arizona.

However, Ben hopes to retire in Orange County, California, where he enjoys being near the water.

    Repurposing Retail Centers

Diane envisions repurposing shopping centers to create comprehensive medical facilities with a range of services, from dermatology to oncology. Ben notes that this transformation is already happening, with medical businesses filling retail spaces. It is called “medtail”.

The Connection Between Personal and Business Success

Ben emphasizes that business and personal well-being are intertwined. Coping with issues like anxiety presents opportunities for personal growth, which ultimately benefits your business endeavors.

  • 23. Heal from Within: The Mind-Body Connection in Cancer Treatment with Amy Winn

Diane continues her Breast Cancer Awareness Month specials with an interview with chemo nurse Amy Winn. Amy and Diane discuss what it is like being a nurse in such a high pressure department, how she handles the emotional side of her job, her volunteer work in Nigeria and her importance of mindset in cancer treatment.

    Discovering Her Calling

Amy knew her calling from an early age, playing healer with dolls and dressing up as a nurse for Halloween. Her innate desire to help people led her to become a chemo nurse.

    Embracing Vulnerability

Amy's empathy shines through in her approach to patient care. She encourages emotional connections and isn't afraid to shed tears with her patients. To Amy, these moments of vulnerability demonstrate her humanity and unwavering care for those she treats.

    Balancing Life Outside Work

To manage stress, Amy is an avid fitness enthusiast, finding solace in activities like crossfit and running. She strives not to carry work-related stress home, relying on her strong support system to discuss and process her experiences.

    The Power of Teamwork

Diane and Amy emphasize the importance of teamwork in the nursing profession. In a chemo unit, healthcare professionals work together as a cohesive team to ensure the best possible experience for patients.

    Disparities in Cancer Care

Amy talks about volunteer work she does in Nigeria. She volunteers as a nurse as well as giving training to local nurses there. She did this interview just before going out there for the third time.

Diane compares her experience in the luxurious chemo unit at Mt. Sinai Hospital to the conditions in Nigeria. Amy describes the differences in resources, highlighting the importance of access to basic amenities.

    Rising Cancer Rates

The conversation takes a serious turn as Diane and Amy discuss the increasing incidence of cancer. They explore the reasons behind this rise, whether it's due to improved screening or environmental factors.

    Immunotherapy

Amy provides insights into the evolving landscape of cancer treatment, particularly the growing interest in immunotherapy. She says it can be given alone or in addition to chemo. Immunotherapy targets receptors on your cells and helps your immune system to target the cancer cells themselves. However, Amy says it does depend on patients genetics if they can get it.

    The Challenge of Cancer Vaccines

Diane inquires about the development of cancer vaccines. Amy mentions the HPV and hepatitis vaccines that can prevent certain cancers but emphasizes the challenges in developing vaccines for a disease as complex and adaptive as cancer.

    The Mind-Body Connection

Amy and Diane delve into the importance of mental and emotional states during cancer treatment. They discuss how a positive mindset, lifestyle, and a strong support system can significantly impact recovery.
