Building Resilience

Why You’re Always Running on Empty

Listen Later

Do you ever feel like you have a thousand things to do, but somehow you get nothing done, not because you're lazy or disorganized, but because your body simply won't move forward?

In this episode of the Building Resilience Podcast, Leah Davidson makes the case that overwhelm isn't a time management problem. It's an energy problem, and underneath that, it's a nervous system problem. Drawing on twenty-seven years as a speech-language pathologist working with clients who had traumatic brain injuries, Leah shares the clinical tools she once used in rehabilitation and explains why they're surprisingly relevant for all of us, especially in midlife when our capacity to absorb demands begins to shift.

You'll learn the four Ps of energy conservation (plan, prioritize, pace, and position) along with the Pacing Points Program, a daily energy budget that helps prevent the crash before your day is done. Leah connects each of these strategies back to your nervous system states, showing why pushing through overwhelm only makes it harder to find your way back to safety and regulation. This is part one of a two-part conversation, so consider it your invitation to start noticing your real energy patterns this week.

We'll explore:

  • Overwhelm is a nervous system signal, not a scheduling failure.
  • The four Ps of energy conservation: plan, prioritize, pace, and position.
  • Why pacing and rest breaks matter, even when you don't think you need them.
  • How the Pacing Points Program works like a daily energy budget.
  • The three nervous system states: Team Resilient, Team Hyper, and Team Hypo.
  • Why midlife changes your capacity, and what your body is really asking for.
