  • #131: The Devotional Practice of Yoga With Dr. Shyam Ranganathan

Dr. Shyam is a scholar-practitioner and professor of the department of philosophy at the York Centre For Asian Research at York University in Toronto, Canada, and the founder of yogaphilosophy.com.

Dr. Shyam translated the Yoga Sutra as a project as an undergrad taking South Asian Studies. This is what sparked his interest in yoga. Through studying the ancient sources of yoga, he recognized how time and colonialism had changed the yoga practice. Then, he began to understand the true philosophy behind the yoga practice.

Yoga is a devotional practice for doing the right thing and becoming a better version of yourself. It creates independence and self-responsibility, two huge parts of yoga often left out of Western practice.

Devotion to yoga is about recognizing the ideal of the practice and committing yourself to it even if you don't fully understand it. Because when you're devoted, you challenge yourself to go deeper, understand, and become better.

Challenge yourself to deepen your practice by going deeper than Asanas and really understand the yoga practice as a whole. After that, yoga is just another part of your life. It becomes second nature when you truly understand the philosophy.

  • #130: When Does Life Begin?

I am not an expert in constitutional law, but as a woman, I felt a duty to create a dialogue around the recent overturning of Roe vs. Wade and the rights that have been stripped from women in many states across the US. Not all of us will agree on this topic. It's a very personal question that really only you can answer yourself. But, that doesn't make it any less important to speak on.

The definition of life is the idea of when the soul was created. To many religious groups, life begins at conception. However, not that long ago, there was a time when the mortality rates for unborn babies and newborns were very high. At this time, life didn't start until a baby was born and took a few breaths.

One of the founding beliefs of the US constitution was the separation of church and state. The equal protection clause of the constitution declares that no state can make a law that reduces the rights of the citizens or deny anyone equal protection of the law.

The overturning of Roe Vs. Wade completely contradicts this constitutional right. Stripping women of the right to birth control or abortion denies them the privilege of being an American and having that equal protection. It's sending us back in time and undoing years of progress for women's rights.

Whatever your opinion on this matter, remember to respect everyone's views, even if they don't align with yours. And, for the rights of all Americans, let's start living up to the constitution of our beautiful country!

  • #128: Embracing The Gift Of The Yoga Practice

Observing is the basis of mediation practice, which is a very vital part of the yoga practice. No matter how many times your mind wanders or where it wanders, the most important thing is to observe that your mind has wandered and then return your focus to your breath.

From your meditation and yoga practice, carry whatever peace and harmony that is in your heart into your life. Kindness is how we make the spiritual message of yoga real. By embodying who we are and expanding the circle of kindness.

Be grateful for the gift of the practice and the generations before us who have taught us the spiritual teachings. Embrace that opportunity to get on the mat and the time you have for your practice!

Start embodying the spirit of yoga today with a short 5-minute sitting practice by expanding your circle of kindness from just yourself or loved ones to everyone.

  • #127: What Is A Successful Yoga Practice?

I've been practicing yoga since college, but does that alone make me a successful yogi? Do the cool poses you can do make your yoga practice successful? Also, no. Success in the yoga practice is not judged by external metrics like aesthetic performance.

Practice is different than performance. A performance entertains; a practice is done for you and you alone. Your yoga practice is meant to help you become a better human being. You'd be surprised at the changes you'll see in yourself through practice.

How you judge your success is also how you can judge your failures. Remember that a practice isn't perfect, it means you're practicing. Just because you're not the epitome of successful yoga practice, that doesn't mean you're a failure either.

What truly defines a successful yoga practice is dedicating yourself to learning more, not just doing more. It's remembering and honoring the fact that yoga practice isn't purely physical. It's also a spiritual journey.

  • #126: The Validation Of Your Efforts In Yoga Practice

Yoga is a spiritual practice, an internal journey that can't be reflected in anyone the same way it is inside yourself. The fundamental idea is that the seeds of awakening, peace, and Samadhi are within every single one of us.

Your experience is best evaluated personally and individually. Not by the standards of others or external factors. "If only" will only toxify your yoga practice, ruining it for you and others. Only you can evaluate your own yoga journey.

The poison of our conditioned existence is the jungle of our thoughts. It is up to us to make a path out of this jungle by honing our thoughts through yoga practice and internal growth. There is a different path for every growth.

And this will not look the same as someone else. But, this doesn't mean you're doing it incorrectly. Your effort and your own evaluation of your efforts in your practice are the only things that matter. Once your efforts are valid to you, they grow into something more.

  • #125: How You Can Infuse Sadhana Into Your Yoga Practice

Many of us, even myself, came into this beautiful world of yoga through Asana or physical practice. Then after some time, it becomes necessary to learn more about the Sadhana or spiritual side of and more subtle limbs of your practice.

This is a very personal journey that will be different for everyone in terms of when you will find the spiritual spark. But, the general rule is by the time you're getting to advanced Asanas, you should be exploring Sadhana. Otherwise, the physical side of yoga can become an obstacle to the spiritual side.

Without equanimity and a calm mind, true presence and awareness cannot happen. Using Anapanasati and other limbs of yoga as tools and transitioning your yoga practice from physical to spiritual, you can find it all and more.

Recognize the true nature of your own mind. Allow sensations to happen or your mind to slightly wander. But always come back to your meditation and breathing. That's the key.

  • #124: Yoga, Community, and Liberation - With Sunaina Madhav Dasi

Sunaina Madhav Dasi (they/them) is a multidimensional human that holds many identities. They immigrated from Bangalore, India in 1996 and are currently settled on the ancestral lands of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute Nations. Sunaina is a mixed-race person (Indo-Aryan and Dravidian) and speaks Tamil as their mother tongue.

Their yoga practice is deeply rooted in Hinduism, Bhakti, and social justice. They follow the lineage and teachings of their ancestors and Sri Paramahamsa Vishwananda as they took initiation into Hari Bhakta Sampradaya. Sunaina uses their neurodivergent superpowers to create a more community-centered world that focuses on individual healing by embracing one's unique purpose.

They believe that the answer is already within us when we choose self-love, accountability, and awareness. With their unique lens of the yogic path, Sunaina creates spaces to reclaim traditional practices, decolonize minds and abolish oppressive systems that affect us at an energetic and societal level. Outside of their practice, they enjoy modeling, photography, dancing, and directing photoshoots!

In our conversation, Sunaina talks about their background as well as coming to America. They also talked about their definition of Yoga, which can be different for everyone. Everyone is on their own journey, and what you bring from the heart to your practice is always the best place to start.

The spiritual side of yoga seems to be bypassed, especially in Western yoga, where Asana is the main focus. But for Sunaina, who is deeply rooted in their traditions and Guru's teachings, uses acceptance, fluidity, and yoga philosophy to create a more accepting space for everyone.

Through the teachings of yoga, you can find true liberation. By allowing yourself to be exactly as you are, you can connect with the divine and yourself.

  • #123: Blissful And Imperfect: Talking Reality/Dharma With Kino MacGregor

After years of practicing, I realized getting my meditation practice perfect wasn't going to happen. But, this impossibility doesn't have to be a problem. Understand the imperfect nature of all things, even yourself, your life, and what you bring to meditation practice.

A wandering mind is not a failed meditation. It's all a part of the practice. And, that's what it is: a practice. Imperfection and failure are a part of learning, a part of reality. No one is without imperfection.

We must also bring this understanding of imperfection into our lives. Our lives are imperfect, with arguments and other negative situations. None of these are failures of your spiritual practice. In fact, this awareness is a sign of spiritual growth.

Another important thing to understand is that judging other beings will only hurt your spiritual growth. The concept of good and bad varies, and it's important to remember that our perception only allows us to see a sliver of reality.

Blissful moments will happen, but this is when it is most important to practice non-attachment. Experience everything for what it is, and let it go. Remain present in the reality you are in and find peacefulness there.

  • #122: A Meditation For Mindfulness And Equanimity

Join me in a guided meditation practice to bring awareness to your full body through breath and sensations. Learn to retrain your brain to become mindful and neutral to all of your thoughts and sensations.

This practice fits well with our previous episode about the Value of Equanimity because it brings you closer to reaching true mental calmness through being aware of your sensations and learning to remain neutral.

The truth you discover from equanimity, that all things are ever-changing, is the foundational truth of wisdom. Mindfulness brings you closer to equanimity through neutral awareness. Sensations create the path of awakening, and it's up to you to discover them through meditation.

After this, you can move into Meta, which cultivates compassion and forgiveness. Sending blessings to your efforts into becoming neutral, compassionate, and peaceful through affirmations and prayer. And, sending blessings to all others for peacefulness as well.

May you all find your way to liberation, wisdom, and peace.
