64. Showing Up for Your Future Self

Listen Later

Consistently showing up for yourself can be a challenge, especially when you’re a people pleaser. Pressure from society, your friends and family, and even your current fleeting wants can all impact how you show up for yourself. Showing up for your present self is a gift to your future self.

If you’re not showing up for yourself, ask why:

  • Are you giving into someone else’s or society’s pressure, even though it’s not what you really want?
  • Is it something you truly want to do?
  • Will this decision benefit your future self?

Think about your future self when showing up, always.

The Chief Complaint: I’m Not Showing Up for Myself

People Pleasing and Showing Up for You

How often do you find yourself setting a plan, whether that’s about your health and nutrition, bedtime, or even making a big purchase, but you feel pressured by other people to change it?

It’s normal for us to feel that societal pressure and honestly, it’s even normal to give in to it. But what happens if you don’t? What happens if you ask yourself if by giving in, you’re showing up for your future self?

Especially as people-pleasers, we think by saying yes to what other people ask us to do, even if it’s outside our plan for ourselves, it’s what they want. And if it’s what the other person wants, then it’s in our best interest to do it.

Why You Should Show Up for Yourself

I totally understand that showing up for yourself is uncomfortable. It’s a new muscle that you haven’t trained yet, but it will get easier with time.

Standing in your own truth and your own power is the best thing you can do. Not just for you who is standing there in the moment, but for your future self who benefits from the action you’re taking.

By showing up for your future self, you’re putting yourself into a growth mindset. Nothing good happens in your comfort zone, but so many incredible things happen when you step out of it.

Quotes

“The idea of social pressure. Sometimes we don’t show up for ourselves because we think we want to please others, in a way, and show up for them, but we actually can’t really do that.” [10:09]

“Saying yes to you often means saying no to other people. If we are people pleasers, we believe at our core that saying yes is the kind thing to do.” [15:18]

“Showing up for yourself, showing up for your future self doesn’t mean that it’s going to feel comfortable. That is the key point. Knowing that when you decide to show up for your future self, it is guaranteed to be uncomfortable because these are uncharted territories.” [17:06]

“You can be a masterpiece and still a work in progress. When we say “your future self,” it’s really tapping on that growth mindset. It’s that you can be absolutely, one thousand percent happy where you are, here and now, and you can also be a work in progress, too.” [22:32]
