Standup comedy entered China in the two-thousands, and blossomed during the late twenty-tens thanks to streaming platforms and Chinese TikTok.
In bar basements, shopping malls, and performance halls, young comics talked subtly and sardonically about the lack of job prospects, the rat race of education, and the pressures to marry and bear children.
Using the mike as a generational megaphone, they described what early adult life is like in a decade when the economy has plateaued.
What's behind the promising market is a wide and enthusiastic audience. Those in their twenties and thirties living in top-tier cities such as Shanghai and Beijing are willing to pay to laugh, given their higher salaries and the pressure they face in daily life.

A newly released video game from China topped charts worldwide on Wednesday in what was celebrated as a breakthrough for the global projection of Chinese culture.
Loosely inspired by the 16th century Chinese classical epic "Journey to the West", the action role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong has become a gaming sensation, drawing acclaim both at home and abroad for its stunning visuals and portrayal of Chinese culture and mythology.
Wukong is nothing if not ambitious. As many of its early trailers and tech demos implied, this was a game punching above its weight.

What do you do if you're travelling alone and need someone to help take a photo that's Instagram-worthy? You can simply ask random strangers on the street to do that. However, results may vary, as there's no guarantee the person is good with the camera. Mark O'dea seems to have this problem – but it looks like he's found a solution to this.
The British content creator shared a video on why he will always ask an Asian person to take his photo when he's trying to get the perfect shot.
“I am not being racist, but whenever I go back to the U.K., I will always ask an Asian person to help me take the photo,” says O'dea, who is based in Malaysia. “And that is because they are better picture-takers than us Brits, and they put in much more effort.”

Imagine going through a rough patch with your boyfriend and thousands of Chinese netizens comforting you.
A western blogger, who goes by YourKris, left a tearful photo on a Chinese social media platform and Chinese users rushed to offer words of comfort, make jokes, or trash her boyfriend's looks.
“you pretty, he ugly, you swan, he frog!” one commenter wrote.
Screenshots of this and other comments made their way to Twitter, and the statement caught on to the point that it's growing into a meme.
People are now repeating the comment as a copypasta over photos of celebrity couples whom some believe are mismatched when it comes to levels of attractiveness.

Quan Hongchan has made a huge splash on the diving world with her ability to enter the water from height with seemingly no splash at all.
Few can contest Quan Hongchan on the diving platform. At just 17, she has become China's diving darling, whose supremacy transcends her age and whose ripple effect on diving is one for the history books.
People have flooded online in awe of her dives.
One Reddit user wrote: "She hacked water, how is it physically possible to jump from that height and not make a splash?"
Others pointed out you can see a tinsy winsy splash, but hey, as another user put it: "I get more splashback from my toilet than that."

Sporting a charmingly “nerdy” look, Xu Zhuoyi won over fans at home in China as he dashed into Thursday's 110-metre hurdles semi-final.
With his bookish demeanor and complete with glasses, Xu transformed into a blur of speed on the track, surging forward in the waning moments of his heat to finish first.
But it wasn't his result that became the talk of the town – rather it was the “glasses flyer's” endearing guise.
Fans marveled at how Xu's glasses remained perfectly in place as he cleared the hurdles, with some quipping that he mistakenly entered the wrong Olympics.
“He took the wrong flight. Instead of Math Olympiad he flew to Paris?” one wrote on X.

As she lay down on the dirt, eyes skyward and fists extended into the Paris haze, the win's gravity seemed to register: Zheng Qinwen had just forged the kind of history that extended far past the stadium and the moment.
This was China's first-ever Olympic gold medal in the sport—and Zheng had made no secret of the fact that the Olympics were as, if not more, important to her than a Grand Slam.
She received no direct prize money from the Olympics—but her star wattage and off-court earning potential will likely make her a millionaire 10 times over.

The United States' 64-year unbeaten streak in the men's 4x100 meters medley ended at the Paris Olympics on Sunday as China swept to a seismic win at La Defense Arena.
Amid deafening cheers at the converted rugby stadium, the 100 meters freestyle world record holder Pan Zhanle brought China home with a truly jaw-dropping swim as he, Xu Jiayu, Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun won in a time of three minutes, 27.46 seconds.
Pan will take enormous credit for defeating them as he celebrated his 20th birthday in style, rocketing to the wall in 45.92 seconds.

China will be home to an estimated 772 million gamers in 2024, who spend an average of 445 RMB a year on video games.
Around half of them are women, a fact brands looking to tap into this multi-billion-dollar industry cannot afford to ignore.
Of course, the 300 million-odd female gamers are not all cut from the same cloth and no genre is one-size-fits-all.
But the once-niche otome ( Japanese for“maiden”) genre commands a loyal female following and is about to take the industry by storm with game developers scrambling to put out otome games.
