Ask Marshall: How Do I Trust Myself and Believe Myself More?
Belief and trust in ourselves was our first natural state. We were born naturally trusting our own senses, impulses, and experiences.
Self-doubt was introduced into our thinking through the reactions of others - namely shaming, questioning, criticizing behaviors, or being dismissed or ignored in what we were sharing.
When others did not trust our experience and senses, we learned not to trust them, too.
This distrust within ourselves creates a massive sense of anxiety, vigilance, and externally oriented validation seeking.
We end up relying on the view points of others to interpret and respond to our inward and outward lives.
Then, when we start to work on healing our internalized self-doubt, we encounter a trap: the sense of it feeling unsafe to trust ourselves.
This sense of unsafeness can be a bit complex.
We feel unsafe trusting our senses due to our past experience of having our senses invalidated.
And we also feel unsafe because trusting ourselves will start to rock the boat, change our boundaries, and could destabilize our connections.
We start to lose a sense of social safety in this walk.
So, how do we navigate this and successfully nurture self-trust again?
