  • Healing the Planet and Our Bodies with Regenerative Agriculture

Healing the Planet and Our Bodies with Regenerative Agriculture
In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with Marshall Seedorff, Director of Sales and Conservationist at Force of Nature Meats and hunting guide at Roam Ranch.

Industrial agriculture sees soil as a commodity. Force of Nature sees soil as the foundation. As Marshall explains, Force of Nature mimics what Mother Nature has done over millennia, understanding that soil health is directly tied to the success of regenerative farming.

According to Marshall: “The mission of Force of Nature is to build a truly global regenerative supply chain, and the bigger we can grow Force of Nature, the more ranches and farmers that we can work with to help them convert their operation from conventional to truly regenerative. We see ourselves as the connection between ranchers that are doing regenerative practices and the end consumer.”

Listen in and hear Marshall’s explanation of the five founding principles of regenerative agriculture, how healthy soil can help reverse climate change, where Force of Nature sources their animals, and his long-term vision for the company and the industry as a whole.

    Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:

    ●      [00:25] An introduction to Marshall

    ●      [01:28] What is Force of Nature Meats?

    ●      [05:37] What is regenerative farming and meat production?

    ●      [09:15] The pitfalls of industrial agriculture

    ●      [12:49] How animal integration contributes to regenerative agriculture

    ●      [16:25] Combating climate change through regenerative agriculture

    ●      [18:04] How Marshall developed a passion for regenerative agriculture

    ●      [19:57] Animals distributed through Force of Nature and where they are sourced

    ●      [30:13] How to practice regenerative farming at home

    ●      [33:55] How regenerative agriculture can change people’s perspective on the industry

    ●      [38:42] The long-term vision of Force of Nature

    Memorable Quotes:

“Soil health is the foundation of regenerative agriculture.”

“Our soils were what they were, and are what they are, because of animals and this whole system working holistically.”

“If you care about the land, the animal, the rancher, and ultimately what you’re putting in your body, look not just for grass-fed meat, but also meat that is grass-finished and pasture-raised.”

“We can’t continue to have soil that we’re turning into dirt that is dependent upon our inputs to produce outputs, and those outputs are increasingly becoming less nutrient-dense and worse for our bodies.”

“I think chicken is the ultimate example of commoditized meat.”

“We firmly believe that the field harvest is one of the most humane methods of harvest for bison.”

“You have to ask yourself: What’s better for an animal? Starving to death because they don’t have enough forage to feed themselves? Or controlling the population to a point within the carrying capacity of that habitat so that the animals that are left can thrive?”

Adopting Healthy Habits for a More Fulfilling Life

In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with Georges Schemagin, photographer, yoga teacher, and of Tiger ATX.

Georges is a self-proclaimed “tryer” of things. His openness to dabble in anything that piques his curiosity led him to try yoga at one point, which gave him a love and appreciation for natural movement. Eventually, this led him to the world of martial arts and, in the last five years, Georges has been involved in eleven different martial arts alongside opening his own gym, Tiger ATX.

Listen in and hear Georges’s philosophy for leading a productive life. For him, life is made up of different phases which we must embrace and enjoy to the fullest as they come and go. He encourages us to dabble in anything that helps us grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This goes arm-in-arm with making choices that promote longevity in these areas such as regular exercise, cutting out booze, and adopting healthy rituals.

  • EP8 Creating a More Inclusive Space for Hardcore Athletes with Laurie Porsch

Creating a More Inclusive Space for Hardcore Athletes with Laurie Porsch

In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with Laurie Porsch, fitness instructor, Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner at BETA Academy, and owner of Liberation Barbell Club.

Laurie was inspired to start Liberation Barbell out of a desire to be part of a community that is serious about strength and fitness while being down-to-earth and inclusive at the same time. She wanted to create an environment that was particularly welcoming to women and members of the LGBTQ community, who may not usually feel completely at home at many traditional hardcore gyms.

The Liberation Barbell community lives by a simple code of conduct: Create a safe space, don’t make anybody feel unwelcome, assume good intent, and if you make a mistake, apologize and amend your behavior. The basis for this code of conduct, as well as the foundation of the gym and community, is dignity, best expressed by Donna Hick’s work and her “Ten Elements of Dignity”.

Listen in and hear why Laurie is motivated to provide a safe space for anyone who wants to get involved in strength training, how Liberation Barbell is coping amid the pandemic, and how to thrive as a woman in the powerlifting or BJJ world.

    Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:

    ●      [01:34] Laurie’s vision for Liberation Barbell

    ●      [05:05] The elements of dignity

    ●      [09:50] Reopening the gym, and new classes to expect

    ●      [13:50] Laurie’s goals post-COVID-19

    ●      [20:06] Laurie’s powerlifting career

    ●      [25:00] How Laurie fell in love with Brazilian jiu-jitsu

    ●      [29:04] Being a women in the BJJ world

    ●      [33:52] Laurie’s advice for women thinking about taking up barbell training or BJJ

    Memorable Quotes:

“Dignity and respect are different. Dignity is inherent—everybody has the same amount. It is not earned, whereas respect has to be earned.”

“Come as you are, be who you want to be, and lift heavy shit. That is literally all we advocate.”

“Whatever you enjoy doing for fitness, that’s what you should do, because if you don’t like it, you’re not going to do it.”

“Don’t be afraid to try barbell training or BJJ. Find a place where you feel comfortable, find a trainer that you feel comfortable with, and explore it.”

“There’s nothing in this world, to an extent, that being stronger doesn’t make easier.”

  • EP7 - Bridging Humanity with Yoga with Mark Herron

Bridging Humanity with Yoga with Mark Herron

In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with Mark Herron, co-owner of Sukha Yoga Austin and its adjacent grab-and-go coffee shop, Maha Coffee.

Having been an athlete throughout his youth, Mark recalls how mindfulness and meditation always played a big part in his life. It has helped him to the point that he was accused of taking steroids for this above-average size, speed, and skill—all honed through years of intense focus on his sport—playing football and baseball in college. Naturally, his affinity for mindfulness eventually led him to establish Sukha Yoga.

Mark loves the creative freedom that having his own business and living his passion gives him. Not only does he enjoy being a yogi; Mark is also a photographer and interior designer. His eye for beauty is most evident at his very own Sukha Yoga.

Listen in and hear Mark’s refreshing take on how yoga can bring anybody of any faith and background together, allowing for grounded, honest, and authentic human connection amid today’s crazy world.

    Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:

    ●      [00:24] Mark Herron background and the origins of Sukha Yoga

    ●      [15:25] Obtaining interior design inspiration from the world around you

    ●      [19:00] How 30 days of yoga transformed Mark

    ●      [26:24] The spirit of yoga, according to Mark

    ●      [35:56] Life as being defined by duality

     ●      [43:26] The sad phenomenon of sensationalism, especially in today’s world

    ●      [48:20] Getting into the flow state

    ●      [57:00] Yoga as a way for people of all beliefs to connect and bring the walls down

    Memorable Quotes:

“You can teach design. Composition, colors, textures—all that can be taught. At the end of the day, design is everywhere, and it’s what we’re attracted to and drawn to: cars, furniture, rooms, businesses, places that you frequent. Do what feels good.”

“If you can be lighthearted about what you do, whether you’re designing or running a business, and trying to have fun, everything works itself out.”

“The whole concept of yoga is to become one, to unite. One with the Creator, or you seeing yourself as part of the fabric of it all.”

“The truths are that we are energy, that we know very little about how our consciousness came to be. We know that we’re really connected to it all. We don’t really know how to explain it. These are truths.”

“A guru is a wise teacher that helps you move from shit times to good times.”

“Emptiness is nothing; but it’s everything. Nothing has value; but it also has value. We live in duality."

“We spend way too much time in our lives consumed with a world that is so fictitious and unreal.”

“I know I have limited time in this body. How much of that time am I spending on something that’s creative and working towards manifesting something that fills me up. Typically, what fills people up is connectivity to others and being in service to others. Or, am I caught up in wishing and wanting and scrolling left or scrolling right and bitching and complaining."

“It’s important in our practice of meditation, of yoga, and communication with each other as humans, to try and be as honest as we can be.”

  • EP6 - How Dr. Amanda Massey Turned Personal Trauma Into A Passion for Performance Optimization

How Dr. Amanda Massey Turned Personal Trauma Into A Passion for Performance Optimization

In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with Dr. Amanda Massey, a sports chiropractor for humans and animals across Central Texas. Her main location is at Tiger ATX in Austin, Texas. After a horse-related accident at the age of 16, Dr. Amanda had to go through a considerably painful period of rehab for a debilitating back injury. It was this traumatic experience through which she gradually developed an interest in becoming a chiropractor.

Dr. Amanda’s recovery included her going through a detox diet of smoothies, vegetables, and clean meats while completely avoiding dairy, gluten, and grains. This helped her to reduce inflammation in her body, which allowed her to get off of the massive amount of painkillers she depended on up to that point. She reflects on the willpower needed to get through that particular process, and the benefits it gives to anyone who is in chronic pain. It wasn’t the end of her road to recovery, but it was a huge obstacle that she had overcome.

As fate would have it, Dr. Amanda had another accident in college when a horse she was riding during a competition reared straight up as she was trying to get it to turn, causing her to fall off and separate her shoulder and slightly damage her ribcage and back. Luckily, with the help of her chiropractor, Dr. Amanda was able to get back in the saddle within only a couple of months this time around. She continues to ride to this day, though she has eased off the competitions.

Listen in and learn the three main factors that create dysfunction in the body, how to improve your fascia health, and best practices for healthier eating.

    Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:

    ●      [00:24] Dr. Amanda’s background

    ●      [05:26] The evolution of Dr. Amanda’s principles as a chiropractor

    ●      [07:20] Keeping your connective tissue healthy

    ●      [14:14] How Dr. Amanda recovered from her first accident

    ●      [23:34] Dr. Amanda’s second horse-related accident

    ●      [33:00] The basics of animal chiropractic

    ●      [38:14] Tips for better nutrition

    ●      [43:12] Dr. Amanda’s favorite thing about Austin

    Memorable Quotes:

“Chiropractors are a weird group of people. But what’s cool about anyone in the holistic healthcare field is, we all unite together because we want to embrace independent thinking, free thinking, the ability to make your own decisions for your healthcare, and looking for more natural options for taking care of your body.”

“You never want to stretch a torn muscle. You always want to foam roll it.

“Everyone’s bodies respond to food differently, so everyone needs a different diet.”

  • EP5 - Creating a healthier relationship with food with Melissa Gatto

In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with health and fitness coach Melissa Gatto. The Ohio native graduated from college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and built up a strong background in a variety of dance forms, from classical ballet, to musical theatre, to tap, among others. Six months following her graduation, she moved to New York City where she danced professionally for the next five years. Upon her retirement, Melissa made her foray into the world of fitness through Crossfit, and eventually made the exciting decision to become a certified trainer.

While Melissa loved her career in dance, she laments the intense physical toll it took on her body, not to mention the body dysmorphia she quietly endured as a relatively muscular individual in the professional ballet scene. Even after her retirement, Melissa’s body dysmorphia carried over into Crossfit. She learned to chip away at it over time through therapy, meditation, and journaling in order to “heal old trauma and old wounds, and just let go of negative thoughts around my body and what I feel needs to change”.

Melissa also had to work on creating a healthier relationship with food. While she was able to consistently perform as a dancer without much consideration regarding her diet, entering Crossfit in her late 20s was a different story. She might have gotten lean, but she was constantly tired. Melissa experimented with different diets, some leaning her out better than others. Over time, she was forced to consider how nutrition affected her energy levels, lifestyle, and general fitness beyond simply how she looked.

Listen in and learn how Melissa practices mindful meditation to keep positive thoughts at the forefront of her thoughts, how she rebuilt her relationship with food after leaving dance, the importance of listening to your body, and best practices for ensuring your body is running on the right type and amount of food.

    Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:

    ●      [00:48] Melissa’s background

    ●      [06:00] How dancing full-time affected Melissa’s body over the years

    ●      [10:15] How Melissa deals with her body dysmorphia

    ●      [14:34] Why Melissa became inspired to train with weights

    ●      [17:39] Discovering the importance of nutrition

    ●      [24:26] How Melissa’s calorie count as a dancer changed as a Crossfitter

    ●      [30:39] Melissa’s philosophy around nutrition and how she coaches her clients

    ●      [40:40] Melissa’s advice for those suffering with body dysmorphia or getting started with their fitness journey

    ●      [42:08] Melissa’s favorite thing about Austin

    Memorable Quotes:

“Find something that you can get lost in and keep improving upon for a long period of time, instead of necessarily always focusing on your looks.”

“We can’t always be in a cut. Where we should be living is maintenance.”

“I believe in sustainable habits and flexible dieting. What we eat is our diet. I do not believe in restrictive diets, at all.”

“If you don’t physically enjoy eating it, don’t eat it.”

“The media has brainwashed us to think that we have to not eat in order to lose weight. That can’t be further from the truth.”

“When looking to optimize your nutrition, give yourself some grace and add in the good stuff, because adding in more of the good stuff is going to eventually take the bad stuff out.”
