Videos in job applications are becoming more and more popular and more and more common.

I've seen it in 2 ways:
Built in as part of your application (integrated into the ATS)

Asked to go to another platform and copy/paste the video link
Pros:
More personal

Can assess potential culture fit better

Understand someone's personality before an interview

Get specific questions answered

Unique ... for now

Saves time

Reduces costs

Can record if needed

Consistent process for everyone
Cons:
Could be discriminatory to conscious or unconscious bias

Not appropriate for all jobs

People can re-record

Takes time for candidates

A good portion of candidates won't do it
Tips:
Be professional

Dress as you would for an in person interview

Make sure your background is clean and presentable

Re-record if you need to and are able to

Let your personality shine

Be sure to directly answer the questions asked

Answer the question thoroughly without rambling or going on tangents

Make an outline before you hit record

Watch/edit if possible

Super exciting time when we are preparing for that next step, your promotion!
Tips:
Ask for it

Make your intentions known to your manager

Ask your leader for advice and help

Set clear expectations with your boss on what you need to do to obtain a promotion

Look and accept offers externally

Ask for feedback on a regular basis

Learn new skills as needed

Take on more responsibility in your current role

Hit and exceed your goals / KPIs

Be the go-to person on your team

Train / mentor new team members

Track your accomplishments and how you overcame major career / job obstacles

Stay engaged

Be positive, when when it's hard

Help other people on your team as appropriate

Solve complex issues with your customers and / or team

Stay away from the gossip and / or politics

Meet deadlines

Be a person people feel comfortable talking to / approachable

It is a major let down and really discouraging to be excited to start a new job, just to actually start and realize it's awful.
Red flags:
Lack of follow up from the team (recruiter, hiring manager, other team members)

People not providing straight answers to your questions

Lack of transparency

Resistance to you meeting with other team members

Negative tone of people you interview with

Sense of over worked employees

Company doesn't have a large online presence

Mostly negative online reviews for the organization

Pressure to accept the job on the spot

Unable to see offices (if not all remote company)

All the things are absolutely chaotic

Get a sense of spammy or too good to be true vibe

Lack of professionalism

Rude or abrasive

Offer comes in super low

Bad press

No sense of employees being able to take time away from laptop

Communication is so so important. A lack of it can be challenging for sure.
And sometimes we need to take control so we are getting what we need to be successful.
Tips:
Acknowledge the challenge

Ask for regular 1:1 meetings with your manager

Establish and set expectations with your boss

Send progress email updates to your leader

Offer to be a note taker for team meetings and send to everyone on the team

Understand your KPIs and how your performance is measured

Use the tools available to you

Stay consistent

Be the change

Ask for feedback

Figure out the problem ares as it relates to communication and fix it

Make sure you and your team have created a space where people feel they can communicate

Practice active listening

Understand and know your team's preferred method of communication

February 13, 2020What To Do When You Are Passed Over For A Promotion
It certainly doesn't feel good to be passed over for a promotion.
Don't get bitter, get better!
Did you apply for the role? Or make your desire for the role known?
Tips:
Express gratitude for being considered

Get feedback from your manager

If the hiring manager is not your manager, get feedback from that person as well

Figure out what you need to improve on and make a plan

Have a candid conversation around expectations and when you should achieve certain tasks / goals to be eligible for a promotion

Ask yourself if this was a blessing in disguise

Stay focused and engaged

Determine what's next

Track your progress and accomplishments

Evaluate how long you've been in your role with no promotion to help determine if you should look externally

Process and move through any negative emotions so you don't become bitter or resentful

Evaluate if that promotion is / was the type of work you still want to move into

Be positive and welcoming to the person who got the role

It can be really hard when you are in a bad corporate culture or really bad morale at work.

We have 3 main choices:
Stick it out

Leave

Try to change it
Tips:
Find the positive

Identify the areas you'd like to improve

Set boundaries where / when possible

Speak up when things make you uncomfortable

Redirect / course correct in the moment

Lift others up / compliment / highlight the good work others do

Team building exercises

What training can you and your team could do

Take feedback well

Be open and honest with others

Establish / create / re-iterate the 'why'

Offer / ask for more flexibility

Find time / spaces to get incredibly focused

Create a physical space you can thrive in

Take time off / schedule it out when necessary

Clear expectations / updates / goals

Be yourself and celebrate others being themselves

Work towards the next step in your career

Changing careers can be challenging.
Before you make the change, understand what is sparking the change.
Let's review the 4 main types of resumes:
Chronological resume

Functional resume

Combination resume

Job specific / targeted resume
When changing careers we want to combine 3 and 4.
Combining the combination resume while targeting specific roles because recruiters will still want to know your work history.
Make sure you also highlight your education/certificates/training as it relates to the new career you're looking to move into.
When making a change try and talk to people who has made your particular career change. Also try and talk to people who hire the roles you're looking to get.
As you might know, I'm not sure huge on cover letters however a great cover letter is going to be key when changing careers.
