Do You See Yourself As A Real Person?
Essentials: Taking Back Your Personhood
Abuse and neglect rob us of being a person - a being that is recognized as having inherent worth, limits, boundaries, desires, dislikes, needs, and perspectives.
We are often conditioned to see ourselves (and others to some degree) as objects that perform a function and a benefit.
This kind of conditioning is especially pronounced in narcissistic family systems and cultural systems.
The impact is that we are unable or partially able to access, understand, and execute our sense of being "who I am".
Instead, we're seeking external queues and feedback to direct who we should be and shouldn't be.
This creates perfectionism and people-pleasing behaviors and impulses.
The work here is to take back your personhood - or more specifically:
- Redirect your attention to your internal self
- Prioritize your awareness and senses over what others prefer
- Trust yourself first, especially your senses and awareness
- Utilize your power to choose and act for your well-being first
- Occupy space, disappoint others, and take action on what you need or want despite what others say
This all starts with acknowledging your inherent legitimacy.
