Episode 34: Dr. Anita Johnston joins me to discuss the root cause of disordered eating and how to heal through story and metaphor. I struggled with an eating disorder in high school. I couldn't afford therapy then and felt ashamed about asking for help. I felt like I should know better. So I spent my free time alone in the library, educating myself about healing and food's role in my life. I slowly untangled the knot inside me and went into complete remission. It was nice to chat openly about my shadow with Dr. Johnston. She is a wealth of information and offers skilled guidance to those who seek it.
Anita Johnston, Ph.D., is a Depth Psychologist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling, which has been published in seven languages.
She is the co-creator of the Light of the Moon Café, an online resource with interactive and self-study courses for women around the world.
A pioneer in the field of eating psychology for over thirty-five years, she is currently the Founder and Executive Clinical Director of Ai Pono Hawaii*, which has a residential eating disorder treatment program on Maui.
Dr. Johnston provides virtual individual consultations and conducts workshops internationally. She is best known for integrating metaphor and storytelling into her training as a clinical psychologist to explain the complex issues that underlie struggles with eating and body image.
