The research is clear…our brains change after experiencing domestic violence and narcissistic abuse. The actual structure of our brains changes after experiencing this long-term coercive control and trauma.
If you have experienced brain fog, issues with concentration and focus, constant hypervigilance and irritability, you need to listen to this episode. My guest, Jennifer Frasier, the author of The Bullied Brain shares a look at her research using brain scans of those who have experienced bullying and relationship abuse. We discuss the structural changes to our amygdala, corpus callosum, and hippocampus and the consequences of these changes. We also discuss how malleable and amazing our brains are and specific strategies on how to correct and rewire those structures in our brains.
Jennifer Fraser has a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Toronto where she was trained to take different discourses out of their silos, put them into an arena, and see if the conversation changed. Putting bullying, abuse and brain science into the arena significantly changed the conversation. In her new book, The Bullied Brain, she uses science to debunk myths that prevail in our society in terms of bullying and abuse. Her goal is to educate and share with all who need it the key takeaway which is that the brain is wired to repair and recover regardless of what a target has suffered. We can all benefit from learning brain science and thus becoming empowered and inspired to restore our health and happiness.
