Many of us including myself and today’s guest, Kai Wan, have at times all been guilty of saying this. Today I’ll be chatting with Kai on why we should value being a hairdresser, but not for the reasons of being an award-winning, educator, influencer, social media guru or anything else that we all seem to be transfixed on becoming. No, we’re focusing on why we should not loose focus of our greatest gift, being behind the salon chair and making our clients look and feel amazing.
With a dual-heritage of a Chinese father and a Welsh mother, Kai’s fathers initial reaction to him wanting to be a hairdresser could have stopped him right there in his tracks. But it didn’t. Kai has since gone on to become a highly respected hairdresser within the UK. Wanting to be the very best he could be, he certainly hasn’t under achieved. An award winning hairdresser and industry photographer, Wella brand ambassador and the co-owner with his with Jen of the 3 salon group P.Kai Hair in Peterborough, UK.
It’s safe to say Kai has achieved so much – something you’ll learn all about in todays episode.
However with so many great moments for Kai, to this day his proudest moments in his career are not the glossy front covers and winning awards. His proudest moments are how he has the gift to make people look and feel great. As he says, “Getting a page in a magazine or winning a competition is an ego boost. But the rewards you get for how you make your clients look and feel are so much greater.” High-fives to that Kai.
I hope that you come away from listening to this podcast by never again under estimating what you do. Remember ‘You’re not JUST a hairdresser‘, you’re so pivotal and important in people lives. Enjoy and be proud of what you do!
