  • Video: The growing pains of Iran's tourist industry
With international sanctions lifted, Iran has become a top tourist destination in the region, attracting more than five million foreign visitors in 2015. But faced with an increasing number of tourists, the Islamic Republic is facing a shortage of hotel accommodation. Our correspondents report on the growing pains of the country's tourist industry. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Laura Burloux.

  • Burma: Rohingya minority persecuted by army amid domestic indifference
In Burma, the Rohingya ethnic group are considered by the UN as the world's most persecuted minority, but their problems are largely ignored by the rest of the population. Recent months have seen the army carrying out a large-scale offensive against the Rohingya. Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi governs with the army, who have dismissed claims of human rights violations. In another worrying development, a prominent Muslim lawyer, who had been fighting for more equality, was recently assassinated. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Laura Burloux.

  • Somalia overcomes terrorism fears to hold historic presidential election
After months of delays, Somalia is holding a presidential election. On Wednesday, more than 300 MPs and senators will choose a president from 22 candidates, including incumbent Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. For many observers, holding this poll is a victory in itself; a sign that Somalia, despite being regularly targeted by al Shabaab terrorists and threatened by famine, is gradually getting back on its feet. Our team reports from Mogadishu, where security has been stepped up considerably. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Josh Vardey and Laura Burloux.

  • France's far-right National Front courts new voters
France's far-right National Front officially kicked off its presidential campaign at the weekend with a rally in the city of Lyon. As our reporters found out, party leader and candidate Marine Le Pen seems to be attracting new voters in post-industrial, traditionally left-wing regions in the north-east as well as in right-leaning towns on the south coast. But voters from these two "fronts" don't necessarily share the same vision for the party. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Elise Duffau.

  • The challenges ahead for Gambia
After a political crisis lasting nearly two months, Adama Barrow, the president-elect of Gambia, is back home and ready to get to work. His predecessor, Yahya Jammeh, only agreed to cede power when he was threatened with a military intervention by regional bloc ECOWAS. President Barrow now has to put in place a government and tackle several pressing issues. But it will take time to heal the wounds left by 22 years of dictatorship. Our team on the ground reports on the immense challenges ahead. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Laura Burloux.

  • Japan's pariah descendants fight present-day discrimination
Japan is home to a little-known group of outcasts who are battling discrimination. The burakumin are ethnically identical to their compatriots, but are descended from feudal-era workers who were treated as pariahs because they performed work that was considered unclean. Today, an estimated two million people who describe themselves as burakumin say they still encounter discrimination in employment, housing, and marriage. Our team in Japan met burakumin activist Kazuo Ishikawa. A programme prepare by Patrick Lovett and Laura Burloux.

  • Jordan on the frontline of fight against terrorism
The kingdom of Jordan has been dealing with the spillover from fighting in neighbouring Syria and Iraq. Jordan is seen as pro-Western, and last year it experienced more terror attacks than ever before. The most recent took place last December, killing ten people. However it was an earlier suicide attack in June 2016 that pushed Jordan to seal its northern and eastern border. Our team reports from the Jordanian border with Syria, where tensions remain high. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Laura Burloux.

  • Mexico's manufacturing hub of Ciudad Juarez gears up for new era
The Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, just across the border from Texas, saw a huge manufacturing boom in the 1980s, when the US market was hungry for consumer goods. It later became infamous for being the world's most dangerous city. Today, the city’s streets are safe again, but it faces a new threat – US President Donald Trump is promising to pull American-run factories back north of the border. Our correspondents report from Ciudad Juarez on how workers are coping with the uncertainty. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Laura Burloux.

  • How Morocco is training up French imams
In 2015, France signed a deal with Morocco to help educate future French and Francophone imams. The goal is to reinforce and promote a more balanced form of Islam that conforms to France's Republican ideals. But the deal also aims to play down efforts by Saudi Arabia and Qatar to promote ultraconservative and fundamentalist strands of the religion. This report follows two student imams from their hometown in northern France to training school in Morocco's capital Rabat. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Jessica Sestili and Elom Marcel Toble.

  • Climate change: Florida faces rising sea levels
Florida is the US state that faces the greatest threat from global warming. This is apparent in two of its most iconic locations: the vast wetlands of the Everglades and Miami's seafront. Both urban areas and fragile ecosystems are under threat from rising sea levels and the destruction of freshwater reserves by seawater infiltration. But some scientists say that if properly protected, Florida's wetlands could hold the key to a brighter future - not only for the state but for the entire planet. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Elom Marcel Toble.
