The freedom of the open road is what draws many of us into cycling. This is no different for our guest this week Frankie Holt. She tells us how a cycling trip with her sister inspired her to stay on the bike and changed her life for the better. After a very warm and welcoming experience at her first group ride, Frankie was inspired to create that same feeling for other cyclists. Queer lives have been seriously attacked in U.S. legislature lately (and, always). The voices of those that do not value or respect trans lives have been loud, and this week, we want to learn how to be better allies, create safer spaces in cycling, and ultimately - be louder. That's why we welcome Abi Robins - founder of Queer Gravel. 

Abi shares their experience of being non-binary in the gravel space, and in Texas as a whole. The trio discusses ways that various races can work to be more inclusive, and the barriers that queer people face in cycling. Touching on topics like anti-trans legislature, non-binary race categories, and the emotional labor of queer folks - Abi delves deep into how we can all work to create safer spaces.

At just 19 years old, Isabella Hyser is the youngest female racer in the Lifetime Grand Prix. Even though she may not be able to share a post-race beer with her fellow competitors, she has leaned into the welcoming community of the endurance racing space, and learn as much as she can from the older racers in the field. Growing up racing cross country mountain biking, Bella got into longer endurance rides in 2020, and decided to apply for the Lifetime Grand Prix. She compares this long endurance season with a typical XC season, and shares some of her strategies for staying mentally ready to take on each race.

We know this is a gravel podcast, but this week we couldn’t help but welcome adaptive mountain biker - Annijke Wade. As a Black disabled cyclist, Annijke gives us insight into her experience of the cycling community.

Sharing the life-altering story of her paralyzing mountain bike accident, Annijke outlines that it wasn’t just losing feeling in her legs that was devastating, it was also not being able to engage with her community in the same way. With the cycling community and well as the sport being so important to her, Annijke continues to race, and train as a paraathlete. Annijke shares how to be a better ally and what Black history month means to her.

This year, after finishing the 200 mile race at Unbound Gravel she hopped on a plane to Ireland the very next day to race 1500 miles across the country. Like many women at the top of the gravel scene, our guest this week Carolin Schiff got her start in road and cyclocross racing. The 2023 Unbound 200 champion, tells us about her racing background, and how injuries on the road prompted her to try gravel as an alternative to road racing. Caro made her first gravel trip to the US this year, and skyrocketed to the top of the US gravel scene. Now back in Europe, she chats about the difference in the US and European gravel scenes, and how she is seeing development in a positive direction in both places. Caro also gives us a bit of insight of what the gravel riding is like in her home country of Germany.

Racing 350 miles across the flint hills of Kansas is no easy feat. This week we have the privilege of hearing from the woman who did it the fastest in 2023, Kristen Legan. This was Kristen’s third time toeing the line at the Unbound XL, and her first win at the event. She tells us about her race, and how she managed to keep her mindset steady throughout the day despite dealing with the inevitable ups and downs of this epic adventure. Kristen first raced at Unbound in 2013 in the 200 mile distance, and she reflects on how the women’s field has grown and evolved in the last decade.

As both a coach and an athlete, Kristen offers her insight on how to keep moving forward when your day isn’t going as planned, and also when it’s ok (and how to know when) to pull the pin on a bad day.
