Smart Money

Hannah McQueen: Would we save more by using physical cash?

Listen Later

As money has moved into the digital space, physical cash has become less prevalent.

Only 57.2 percent of kiwis used cash for everyday purposes in 2023, down from 95.8 percent in 2019. Those using cash tend to be among more vulnerable groups, including the young, elderly and disabled, and are more likely to live rurally.

Hannah McQueen joins Tim Beveridge to discuss whether all kiwis would save more by stashing the debit cards and reverting to the use of physical cash.
