  • Micro-Dosing Positivity And Eliciting Change Talk With Your Child Who's Misusing Drugs Or Alcohol

    ABOUT THE EPISODE:
In this quick, solo episode I share two important concepts that will help as you work to find ways to communicate with a child who's misusing drugs or alcohol.

Finding positivity and giving your son or daughter positive reinforcement can be difficult when things are chaotic and life feels out of your control. I share a concept called micro-dosing positivity which can work regardless of where your child is in their substance use.

I then share the importance of listening for change talk, which is a term used in Motivational Interviewing and can be incredibly powerful if you know how to use it. I share ways you can elicit this kind of dialog to invite your son or daughter to change their behavior.

It's a short, snack-sized episode and will add a few more tools to your parenting toolbox.

  • For The Dads: Your Presence, Experience, And Actions Matter When Your Child Is Misusing Drugs Or Alcohol, with Andy Goldstrom

    ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Calling all the dads…this one’s for you. Dads go through their own unique challenges when their son or daughter is struggling with mental health and substance misuse, and I had the chance to talk all about it with experienced dad turned parent coach, Andy Goldstrom.

You'll hear how Andy navigated a busy career and his marriage while working to find help and resources for his daughter who was misusing substances. It's a great episode to share with the man in your life who may be feeling unsure and under-supported with what he's going through.

We talk about how traditional men and women's roles can hinder the process of helping a child, how guys might approach the problem differently than their female counterpart and Andy's advice for any dad who's in the thick of it right now.

Andy was honest and vulnerable in our conversation - a trait he says doesn't necessarily come easy to guys when their child is hurting. It's a must-listen and must-share episode.

  • Four Common Beliefs Parents Have About Fentanyl That Put Their Teens and Young Adults At Risk For Overdose

    ABOUT THE EPISODE:
If you only listen to one podcast episode between now and 2022 make it this one. Parents are often in the dark about the very real, present, and lurking killer that's right in their kid's backpack or coat pocket. Pills labeled Oxy, Percocet, or Xanax, but which are illegal fentanyl, in doses high enough to kill several people.

In this extremely important episode I cover what's actually going on with fentanyl and the impact it's having on people under the age of 30. I talk about the four very common beliefs parents have about this substance and why that could be the very thing that ends their child's life.

I do not hold back, I can't - because we're losing too many precious lives every day - over 275 a day to be exact. Please listen and share as widely as possible, someone may act on the information and save someone they love from dying of unintended fentanyl poisoning.

  • Coaching Episode #2: Dealing With Manipulation, Parenting Paralysis, and Feeling Guilty About Holding Boundaries

    ABOUT THE EPISODE:
In this episode, I have the honor of coaching Cheryl as she deals with manipulation from her son who is in a residential treatment program, and her struggles with guilt around holding boundaries in her family.  She also talks about "parenting paralysis" which happens when she's feeling overwhelmed, unsure and stuck.

Cheryl was brutally honest about her struggles with her son as he's transitioned from a wilderness therapy program to a residential treatment center, and how it's impacted her entire family. She discovers that sometimes, going back to things that have worked in the past can lead you to a new solution.

You'll hear Cheryl's lightbulb moment and how being part of a community has transformed her life, attitude, and ability to navigate this challenging season with confidence and hope.

  • Ryan Hampton Reveals the Truth From Inside the Purdue Pharma Bankruptcy In His New Book, Unsettled

    ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Ryan Hampton is one of those people who instantly exudes his passion and energy for helping people impacted by addiction. In this episode, I sat down with Ryan to talk about his newest book, Unsettled: How the Purdue Pharma Bankruptcy Failed the Victims of the American Overdose Crisis and how it impacted him personally.

Ryan served as co-chair of the official unsecured creditor's committee (UCC) that acted as a watchdog during the Purdue bankruptcy process. He was one of only four victims appointed to the committee, among representatives of big insurance companies, hospitals, and pharmacies.

He entered the case believing that exposing the Sacklers and mobilizing against Purdue would be enough to right the scales of justice. Unfortunately, he quickly learned that behind closed doors, justice had plenty of other competition - those he thought were "friends" turned out to in fact, be foes.

Unsettled is the inside story of Purdue's excruciating Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, the company's eventual restructuring, and the Sackler family's evasion of any true accountability.

It's a do-not-miss episode that will give you insight to the Purdue bankruptcy trial not found anywhere else.

  • Demystifying Co-Occurring Mental Heath and Substance Use Disorders, Answers to All Your Questions with Maryann Badenoch, The Partnership To End Addiction

    ABOUT THE EPISODE:
When a parent hears "co-occurring disorder" from a therapeutic professional it can be scary, daunting and extremely confusing. Mental health disorders commonly accompany substance use in teens and young adults, and vice versa, yet it's hard to know which is which, is one more "primary" and how in the world do you go about treating one or both?

Because co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders are more common than not, I invited one of the field's leading professionals to join me for a conversation to demystify this diagnosis and help parents find their footing.

Mary Ann Badenoch is a mental health professional who truly understands mental health and substance use because she's a person in long-term recovery herself. Mary Ann heads up a caring and compassionate team of specialists and volunteers at The Partnership to End Addiction, where I have the pleasure of volunteering as a parent coach and support group facilitator.

    You'll hear  Mary Ann clarify things like;

    • how common is it that a young person has both a mental health and substance use disorder?
    • why do they commonly go hand-in-hand?
    • how can parents start to detect these issues and how do you go about finding the right mental health professional to help?
    • what are the risk factors for people who have co-occurring disorders?
    • how do you differentiate normal teenage changes from more serious mental health issues?
    • what are questions parents should ask a treatment program to make sure they'll be able to treat both SUD and mental health disorders?
    • can adolescents and young adults be on medications for SUD and mental health at the same time?
    • and her words of hope for parents

Do not miss this gold-mine of information from an industry expert - and one of the most compassionate people working to help teens and young adults heal from mental health and substance use disorders.

  • Preparing For And Enjoying Holidays and Special Occasions With Complex Family Situations, with Lisa Pepper-Satkin

    ABOUT THE EPISODE:
Holidays and special occasions can go from being magical, fun times with family to days we approach with apprehension and even dread when complicated family dynamics are at play.

These feelings couldn't be more present than for parents who have kids struggling with substance use and addiction or who are currently away from home in a treatment program. And for moms and dads whose kids are newly sober - or trying to be - the strain and anticipation of all that might go wrong are next-level.

In this episode with therapeutic coach and consultant Lisa Pepper Satkin, we explore why holidays and special occasions can be so stressful and share ways to prepare better and approach them to keep our emotions and expectations in check.

It's one you'll want to listen to before Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, or any day that brings tension to your home and body.  You'll walk away with tools to help if you're trying to decide how to "do" holidays right now, learn ways to prepare instead of being blindsided, and hear how your mindset can make all the difference.
