          Gerald Shulman is a Professor of Medicine, Cellular & Molecular Physiology, and the Director of the Diabetes Research Center at Yale. His pioneering work on the use of advanced technologies to analyze metabolic flux within cells has greatly contributed to the understanding of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. In this episode, Gerald clarifies what insulin resistance means as it relates to the muscle and the liver, and the evolutionary reason for its existence. He goes into depth on mechanisms that lead to and resolve insulin resistance, like the role of diet, exercise, and pharmacological agents. As a bonus, Gerald concludes with insights into Metformin’s mechanism of action and its suitability as a longevity agent.

          • Gerald’s background and interest in metabolism and insulin resistance (4:30);
          • Insulin resistance as a root cause of chronic disease (8:30);
          • How Gerald uses NMR to see inside cells (12:00);
          • Defining and diagnosing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (19:15);
          • The role of lipids in insulin resistance (31:15);

          Jerry Seinfeld — A Comedy Legend’s Systems, Routines, and Methods for Success | Brought to you by Wealthfront automated investing, Oura smart ring wearable for personalized sleep and health insights, and Rokform rugged cases for iPhone and Galaxy. More on all three below.
          Entertainment icon Jerry Seinfeld’s (@jerryseinfeld) comedy career took off after his first appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1981. Eight years later, he teamed up with fellow comedian Larry David to create what was to become the most successful comedy series in the history of television: Seinfeld. The show ran on NBC for nine seasons, winning numerous Emmy, Golden Globe, and People’s Choice awards, and was named the greatest television show of all time in 2009 by TV Guide and in 2012 was identified as the best sitcom ever in a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll.
          Seinfeld made his Netflix debut with the original stand-up special Jerry Before Seinfeld along with his Emmy-nominated and critically acclaimed web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, which has garnered over 100 million views, and which the New York Times describes as “impressively complex and artful” and Variety calls “a game-changer.” His latest stand-up special, 23 Hours to Kill, was released by Netflix earlier this year.
          He is also the author of Is This Anything? which features his best work across five decades in comedy.

          Modern Wisdom

          Podcast Notes Key Takeaways
          • “To be brilliant you have to be irrational” – Rory Sutherland
            • Nearly all disproportionately successful businesses obtained their success because of, not despite, some seemingly irrational component in their offering
            • “Conventional marketing approaches probably encourage us to make products that are kind of ok” Rory Sutherland
          • The Adult Entertainment industry has adopted many technologies well before other businesses
          • If people don’t behave according to our theory, it’s likely that the theory is wrong, not people’s behavior
            • Human behavior is the result of thousands of years of evolution
          • If you’re selling a product online, don’t overwhelm customers with too many choices
