  • Using Grants to Fund Your Private Practice with Anne Marie Flood

Have you ever wondered how you could use grants to fund your private practice?

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Anne Marie Flood, a Grow Your Private Practice student to discuss how she did it and now has a thriving private practice.

Some cool things that we discussed in the episode include how as a homeschool parent herself, she's been able to attract home schoolers as clients and how hiring a virtual assistant has been a game changer for her practice.

If you've been thinking about starting and growing a private practice and want to hear how Anne Marie did it, this is a must listen episode!

After 5 years as a Spanish teacher, including earning a master's in Secondary Education, Anne Marie found her passion in the form of Speech Language Pathology. She returned to pursue a master's degree at the University of Maryland following the birth of her oldest children.

Between virtual, school-based, and private practice experience, Anne Marie has worked with children with speech and language impairments, and their families, all across the US.

Anne Marie founded Play & Thrive Speech Therapy in January 2022 in the hopes of offering families more flexibility and collaboration. She believes in partnering with families to help early learners improve their speech and language skills through play.

She currently lives in Arnold MD with her husband. When not in the clinic, she can be found homeschooling her two older kids or running with the youngest in the stroller.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Anne Marie’s journey into speech therapy and private practice
    • How to get grants that can help you fund your private practice
    • The most under tapped way to get resources for your private practice
    • The benefits of offering teletherapy in your business
    • How a virtual assistant can take your practice to the next level
    • Ways to get referrals based on the populations you are working with
    • How Anne Marie tapped into the homeschool population
    • Anne Marie’s latest level up in her private practice

I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Anne Marie as much as I did! I love how she had a goal and she went for it. Like with the grant, for example, she looked into resources available to business owners in her community, and she applied and she got it. You know what they say, you can't win if you don't play!

Have you been curious about starting your private practice on the side and then eventually going full-time with it? This episode of Private Practice Success Stories is for you!

I sat down with my Start Your Private Practice student Kimberly Kean who did just that. In this episode, she talks about what her private practice looks like now, as well as her plans to grow her private practice by offering more services and hiring clinicians.

Triad Speech Therapy opened its doors in March 2022 after Kimberly worked in various settings (SNF, LTC, and the school systems in Virginia and Kentucky). While working for a friend and mentor in her private practice in Virginia for several years, Kimberly was enlightened to see that you can make money as an SLP and enjoy some work-life balance as a mother.

She enrolled in the Start Your Private Practice course in the winter of 2021, and the rest is history!

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Kimberly’s journey to becoming an SLP and private practice owner

  • Growing a Private Practice in New York City With Genna Ricotta

Dreaming of starting your own private practice in the big city?

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Genna Ricotta who started her practice in New York City. In addition to talking a lot about referrals and where she's getting her clients from, Genna shares a lot about family and what having a private practice has meant for her family, as well as the importance of building strong relationships with clients and treating them like family.

Genna Ricotta is the founder of Small Steps Speech and Feeding Therapy, LLC. She’s been a pediatric SLP for over 20 years. She has always loved interacting with children and teaching them in a way that they don’t feel like it’s work. She never sees limitations, only the possibilities.

Genna has worked in a variety of settings throughout her career, including working for a private practice in NYC, but after a few months realized that she could not deliver services the way she thought they should be delivered so she went out on her own initially doing independent contractor work and then slowly building her caseload of private clients.

That was 15 years ago and now she has hired her first full-time employee and provides services in schools and her office as well as doing screenings for schools, parent talks, and parent training.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Genna’s journey from SLP to private practice owner
    • How she leveraged connections and referrals to grow her business in a big city
    • The power of working together as private practitioners to help each other grow
    • How school contracts became her bread and butter
    • Why Genna decided to bring on independent contractors to her business
    • The freedom you get from private practice to create the life you want
    • Vacationing as a private practice owner

I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Genna! She is a perfect example of someone who started her private practice to have more flexibility for her family, and now she's allowing other families to have flexible therapy options. A win-win for all!

  • Pivoting Into Private Practice to Create Her Dream Job with Kelsey Brown

Are you tired of working in settings that don’t serve you and your clients the way you need?

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Kelsey Brown, a Start and Grow Your Private Practice student, to talk about her journey as an SLP and why she decided to do things differently and start her own private practice.

Kelsey shares how she started to lay the groundwork for leaving her job, exactly how she's making more money and working less, and how she's built stability into her income by filling a school contract and doing sessions while she builds her private pay caseload.

Kelsey is a great example of a young and talented SLP who refused to get caught up in working in settings that didn't serve her or her clients and is instead creating her own systems and life through her private practice.

Kelsey Brown (she/her) is a DC-based speech-language pathologist by day and children's book author ("Come On, Calm," 2019) by night, weekend, and summer. She has undergraduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Theatre from The University of Georgia and a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from Emerson College.

Kelsey’s love for speech therapy started when she was 14 years old and she’s been interested in working with individuals with complex communication needs since her first introduction to assistive technology her freshman year at UGA (she later completed a certificate program in Instructional Design and Technology).

Kelsey’s experience includes working with and learning from the folks at St. Coletta of Greater Washington, Boston Children's Hospital, the Access Champions podcast, Imagination Stage, Soaring Starts Early Learning & Arts, and Camp Twin Lakes. Her theatre and teaching artist background help to inspire fun and motivating client-centered sessions in a naturalistic environment: your home or community space.

While she was leading school-based teletherapy sessions during the first year of the pandemic, Kelsey enjoyed the close relationship she built with her students’ families. In both in-person and virtual speech, language, and literacy sessions, Kelsey builds caregiver coaching into every session.

Kelsey Brown specializes in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), emergent literacy, early intervention, and gestalt language processing.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • Kelsey’s experience as a new SLP
    • How Kelsey found confidence in herself as a clinician
    • When she decided to go into private practice
    • How Kelsey built up her private caseload
    • The power of building relationships with other professionals
    • The happiness Kelsey feels now that she is a private practitioner
    • How Kelsey structures her work day in her private practice
    • The basics of what you need to start a private practice
    • The book that Kelsey wrote and how she achieved it

I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Kelsey! I love how committed she is to gaining knowledge and experience and then implementing it to change the lives of those around her while changing her own life. She may have started slowly, but laying that groundwork allowed her to quit her job when the time was right and she hasn't looked back.

The private practice movement is gaining momentum and it's time for you to be a part of it. Want help to start your own private practice - just like Kelsey? We can help! Visit www.StartYourPrivatePractice.com to learn more.

  • Working Less, Making More, and Seeing Ideal Clients as a Young Private Practitioner with Luisa Rinaudo

Wondering if you are too early in your career to start a private practice?

You aren’t! In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my students, Luisa Rinaudo, to talk about how she suffered from early career burnout and made the leap to private practice. Now Luisa is working less, making more, and seeing the clients she is truly passionate about on her own terms.

Luisa Rinaudo is the owner of The Therapy Garden, LLC. Her passion for educating and instructing individuals, especially those in the neuro-divergent community has always been a driving force in her personal and professional life. She is the lucky older sister to two siblings, one of which was born with Down syndrome-a superpower as she likes to say! Her brother has given her countless opportunities to find her potential and when she was ready to decide on a career, this is where she landed.

She pursued her Bachelor's degree in early elementary education and special education at Seton Hall University from 2015-2019. After completing her undergraduate studies, she went on to obtain her Master's degree in speech-language pathology from 2019-2021, also from Seton Hall University. Since then, she has been working as a speech-language pathologist in Monmouth County, NJ, serving both pediatric and the adult populations.

She has always wanted to have her own practice and was one of those people who thought it should happen once she was more experienced in her field, but with some words of encouragement she told herself "What better time to do it than now?!"

While she loves and continues to work with the pediatric population, she has seen the lack of programming out there for adults in this community and she wants to be a part of that change. She wants to give her brother and individuals of all abilities a place where they feel welcome, heard, and accepted. Right now, she has a very small office, but until she is able to provide a bigger space she hopes that she can be a person of comfort and connection with her clients.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • The clients that Luisa serves in her private practice
    • When Luisa decided to start her own private practice
    • The risk of reaching career burnout
    • How the Start program helped Luisa get going
    • How to know when it’s time to go all in on your private practice
    • What a typical day in Luisa’s life as a private practice owner looks like
    • The flexibility you can get as a private practice owner
    • How Luisa was able to get a physical office space
    • The community-based services Luisa offers

I hope you enjoyed this episode with Luisa! She is a perfect example of someone who knew that she was heading toward burnout and decided to make a change so that she could live the life that she wanted while staying in the career that she loves.

  • Private Practice on the Homestead: Balancing Work and Family with Olivia Rae Jones

Thinking about how starting a private practice could give you more flexibility and time with your family?

In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my students, Olivia Rae Jones, to talk about how she started her private practice on her homestead so that she could have more work-life balance.

Olivia shares about her recent resignation from her job, where she gets her clients, the home office that she's building is part of their recent renovation, and how she eventually wants to create a multidisciplinary clinic with multiple clinicians to serve her community locally.

Olivia Jones is a speech-language pathologist in rural south central Wisconsin. She earned her Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology from Midwestern University - Downers Grove.

Private practice was the dream from the very beginning. Olivia developed her experience in SNFs, acute care, adult and pediatric outpatient, inpatient rehab, and finally, schools before making the leap into her own practice just 6 years into her career.

Olivia is focused on growing Marigold Speech Pathology Services to a full-time career with the support of her family on her multigenerational homestead.

    In Today's Episode, We Discuss:

    • When and why Olivia started thinking about private practice
    • What kept Olivia focused and driven during the Start program
    • The need that Olivia filled in her community and the clients she gets to serve now
    • The home office Olivia is building for her practice

    • The huge demand for speech services
    • Why it’s okay to grow slow or at the pace that’s comfortable for you
    • Olivia’s plan for growing her private practice

I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Olivia! There are so many communities across the US where people simply don't have access to therapy services. Even in big cities where there actually are private practices, many of them have waitlists, which means there aren't enough providers.

Olivia was able to scale from 0 to 20 clients and will have many more than that with the help of both the Start and Grow Your Private Practice programs!

Adding income streams to existing private practices is something that I help folks do inside of the Grow Your Private Practice program. To learn more, visit Growyourprivatepractice.com.

Whether you want to start a private practice or grow your existing private practice, I can help you get the freedom, flexibility, fulfillment, and financial abundance that you deserve. Visit my website www.independentclinician.com to learn more.
