Our minds are a hell of a thing. They process the world around us, they create stories about what we experience, they can be our greatest ally and at times our greatest enemy. Our minds can shift, grow, evolve and adapt to our circumstances and the information we are feeding them. Today Bobby and I are discussing the concept of ‘my belief is greater than your doubt’. It’s a concept that is proven when records are broken, human potential is unlocked, discoveries are made and success is experienced against the odds. In a world fraught with comparison, self-doubt, competition and negativity, it’s a concept I see as worth having hardwired into our way of thinking.

This week I was thinking about the way the world and everyone in it reflects me back to me... Like the theory around when you get out of the wrong side of the bed, and everything seems to be a bit sh^t or go a bit wrong. What can we learn about ourselves when we think of the world like a big mirror?

Is it just me or does it seem like Mark is constantly on vacation? So it's no surprise that he's barely out of his holiday togs as we sit down to record this chat. However, his frequent travels align with his beliefs about living a fulfilling and balanced life, so I'm planning to watch and learn a little. In our conversation, Mark provides insight into crafting an effective 'out of office' message. Additionally, after conquering his fear and swimming with whale sharks (and unknowingly a Great White), we delve into the topic of white lies and when they might be deemed acceptable.

When it comes to the big questions about what lives inside that scone of ours, this conversation with Dr. Caroline Leaf could very well be my all-time favourite! Exploring what lives at the intersection of mind, body and brain is a hell of a curious corner of the world to rummage around in. There's neuroscience, physiology and medicine. There's energy, spirituality and belief. And pending who you speak to, there are all shades of grey in-between.
Among a long list of credentials, Dr. Caroline Leaf is a cognitive neuroscientist with a Masters and PhD in Communication Pathology and a BSc Logopaedics, specializing in cognitive and metacognitive neuropsychology. Since the early 1980s she has researched the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. She was one of the first in her field to study how the brain can change (neuroplasticity) with directed mind input.
I throw some curly questions her way, seeking clarity around what and where is the mind and what is the nature of it's relationship with the brain? When we refer to 'I' where is that part of me and where does my identity live. Because if I have a brain and I have a mind... where is the I?
Dr. Leaf speaks with such clarity and simplicity around an incredibly complex topic... Making it digestible, applicable and easy to implement.
I hope you love it too.

Talk about inspired. Bart Walsh has faced some big (sh^t) things in his life so far, and as I speak with him today his perception of life, gratitude and adapting to the cards thrown his way is something I’m more than happy to have rub off on me. He’s fought an aggressive cancer, had his jaw replaced with his fibula, learned to walk and talk again, experienced the grief of losing an infant and just to top all that off has discovered that he has a degenerative physical condition that will continue to affect his fine motor skills. In saying all that, Bart's existing appreciation for what the human body and mind is capable of has aptly sky-rocketed and as he manages gyms and shares his story the ripple effect of his experience can touch the masses.
This is an exceptional conversation with an exceptional human.
Enjoy!

What if I said it's all my fault? Sounds heavy. Sounds like blame and self-loathing. But what if we changed the words and accepted the 'fault'. To me that then sounds like empowerment. Like taking back the wheel.
There's fault and there's responsibility. There's fault and there's reason. There's so much value in seeing, understanding and owning the part we play in everything that happens to us and around us. As I've said before, the world is a great mirror. Bobby and I discuss the benefits of taking this perspective and putting our ideas, actions and beliefs under the microscope.
As always with the great man Cappuccio, it's an epic chat (well, hopefully you think so too).

Hands up if you ever get frustrated about not making progress. Hands up if you've considered changing careers or starting something new but you know it's too late.
They say (whoever they are) that we overestimate what we can achieve in a year... and we underestimate what we can achieve in a decade. Well, I happen to think they're dead right.
When I reflect on times, stages, circumstances in my life, so often the timeline is skewed. It seems like forever and a heartbeat. I've felt like I've sat stagnant for what feels like forever, only to occasionally reflect with some alternate perspective and suddenly realise just how much progress and change has actually happened.
This is a banter about that.

Louise Lowe, wife of John and mother to two young boys was tragically taken from this world in 2014. This is her story, as told by John.
John shares with us the sudden and unexpected passing of Louise and the days after where organ donorship was discussed and agreed to, because those were Louises wishes and fortunately something that John and Louise had discussed.
Sometimes it's hard to find the words that do justice for a conversation and for me this is one such time. I sat both mesmerized and heartbroken as I listened to Louises story and tears welled in my eyes several times (so yeah, grab yourself some Kleenex before you get underway). Yet it is a story of love, hope, purpose and second chances that amidst a whirlwind of emotions will leave your heart full to the brim (I promise).
I can't thank John enough for his willingness to share his families experience, and for his ability to do so in the way that he does. It is a gift that through an undeniable ripple-effect will ensure that more lives are positively impacted by organ donation and that future families faced with such tragic circumstances may have the comfort of certainty around knowing their loved ones wishes.

In the blink of an eye Al Viney's world was turned upside down. She had just graduated year 12 in Tasmania and was planning to embark on a gap year overseas and upon return resume the life of a professional athlete. Proving to be quite the handy rower and fueled by a passion for sport it was all shaping up to plan. But a high-speed car accident caused by a drunk driver left her with lasting physical impairments along with psychological and emotional trauma. It took 8 years before the seed of being an athlete was spontaneously planted into Al's mind, something she'd simply accepted was now forever beyond her capabilities. (Boy was she wrong about that)
This is Al's first time sharing her story on a podcast and to say that this conversation was a privilege is a vast understatement. Al's recollection of the accident is both vivid and raw, and with this she shares openly and honestly how the weight of trauma along with her perception of her involvement has affected over the years since.
This is one of my favorite conversations which for me highlights so much about what we can achieve when we unshackle ourselves from perceived limitations. Al is now a record-breaking athlete, an Australian Paralympian and now serves as an incredible inspiration for others to get out there and make Australia proud!
What a legend... and WAY too humble!

Look, Joshua Pate may not have initially embraced the title of 'King of Pain,' but his dedication to pain research and his pursuit of a PhD in the field have earned him a seat on the pain throne for our discussion
As an athlete, particularly one involved in combat sports, I've always been intrigued by the intricate relationship between pain and injury. In the past, many physical therapists used to view pain as a signal to rest or immobilise for recovery, but scientific advancements are reshaping our understanding. With the distinction between acute and chronic pain and the growing knowledge of neuroscience and how our brain perceives pain, our perspectives have undergone significant shifts.
Josh now focuses his work on children experiencing chronic pain, and I find the approach to resolving this to be equally captivating. I'm convinced you'll love this conversation. (It'll be quite a pain if you reach the end and don't, wont it?)
