Today with Bobby we are talking about my obsession with words and language, given the words we use and how we use them influences not only how we interact and engage with others but also our own understanding of ourselves and our inner world. We hear some alcohol stories and share some thoughts on what is and isn't perhaps an idea relationship with booze. And of course we share some ideas around what it means to tap into doing the hard thing, when we think we can't or shouldn't, in order to realise the potential of our mind vs our limiting beliefs.

****ing look out! The old Cook-powered cogs have been turning in this inquisitive mind of mine again and churning out some rando thoughts, ideas and questions.
Like, does my stuff matter when I get the story I tell myself about my stuff right?
Why does my sense of 'satisfaction' or 'happiness' or perhaps even my 'sense of self' swing wildly in opposing directions at times despite the actual reality of my circumstances or experiences vastly remaining much the same?
Does the right attitude make the right circumstances and outcomes fall into place?
Would I even care if those circumstances 'fell into place' once my attitude was right and I thus achieved a sense of satisfaction and happiness anyway?
Do I believe these questions can even be answered? No, I don't actually... Because reality is just my perception of how things are. So, these answers I seek would (in my opinion) in the end just be a decision that I make for me based on my own interpretation of my own situation.. of which it is impossible for me to be objective about.
Crikey! These #SelfieSaturdays are taking me on quite the bloody ride!

Do you ever struggle to feel like you're 'enough'? Do you believe you are 'worthy' of love? Are you forgiving of your shortcomings?
Would you treat or speak to a friend the way you speak to and treat yourself? Yeah, I think not hey. Self-compassion is the art of turning compassion inward. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that it is no easy feat.
Dr. Kristin Neff is someone I have been waiting for the opportunity to speak to for a while now. She is a pioneer in the study of self-compassion, being the first one to operationally define and measure the construct almost twenty years ago and has been recognized as one of the world's most influential research psychologists.
From practitioner to researcher, and researcher to educator, author and downright guru, there is no one I wanted to speak to more in terms of helping me get some clarity around how we use this elusive construct to heal and strengthen our relationships with 'us' and our identity.
Fierce self-compassion, tender self-compassion, self-esteem, identity, toxic environments/people, positive affirmations... How do we navigate it all?
This is an episode I hope we all listen to a couple of times over. x

I'm a bit late to the party here, but last month (October) was sexual violence month. ****ing ridiculous that we need a month to raise awareness around such a topic if you ask me. However, I stumbled across a post on the @dangerousfemales instagram page that read:
'Sex with a consent, is only sex. There is no such thing as 'consensual sex' or non-consensual sex', that is rape. Rape is not a type of sex. You wouldn't say 'breathing swimming' or 'non-breathing swimming'. You say swimming or drowning.
And so that is the essence of much of today's conversation with Keely Walsh. Keely is an Accredited Clinical Social Worker & Women’s Rights Advocate who has both professional and lived experience in and around sexual violence.
Far too many people will relate to this episode on some level, yet it is our mission to open up the conversation and work towards a reality where that is no longer the case and as a community, we will no longer tolerate sexual violence and assault.

Sam Tait is a weapon of a human. He's an Australian Winter Paralympic Athlete who has been representing Australia in Para Alpine Ski Racing for 6 years now. In 2013 Sam severed his spinal cord in a motorcycle accident and became a T10 complete paraplegic. To this day Sam has no recollection of the accident, nor an understanding around what even occurred in that incident.
Without skipping a beat Sam just picked himself up, dusted himself off (super-fast, might I add) and got down to business around what life was going to look like from a seated position. Alpine Ski Racing sure isn't for the faint-hearted, mine skipped a beat just hearing about some of the gnarly descents Sam has tackled on his quest to represent Australia at the world level.
This is an epic chat that's going to leave you wanting to hit the slopes or do something great!!

Another Sunday, another banter with my brilliant friend Bobby Cappuccio.. Given he is currently moving house we happened to 'unpack' (pardon the pun) the idea around what makes home feel like home and how long does it take to happen... Do you know you're brain doesn't fully immerse in deep sleep when you spend a night in a foreign bed such as a hotel?
We also get curious around a bunch of stuff like science vs anecdotal evidence and personal stories. Who are some of our favourite science-y podcasters and also, why does Bobby keep taking in stray (or not so stray) cats?

I want to tell you about the voices in my head. Yep, there's more than one.
And I want to invite you to sit quietly and listen for your own. They're in there and they are a powerful driving force behind your choices, your behaviour and the level of potential you tap into (or don't). The thing is these voices of ours have been present, consistent and loud for so long that so often we don't even really notice them anymore. But there they are narrating our lives, making meaning, telling stories and shaping how we feel about ourselves in the middle of it all.
It can be extremely helpful. Or it cannot.
In this episode I share with you my own experience of two simultaneously present voices telling me completely opposing realities at the very same time. "Tiff, you are dog sh*t. Best give up and let the talented people stand in your place". Whilst in the same moment, "Tiff, you know you've got this... Eye on the prize, just keep going and we'll shot them all".
What a diabolic sh*tstorm it can be it fail to harness the direction these voices can take us. Whether we acknowledge or have awareness of them or not, they are there and they are influencing our self-belief and our outcomes.
It doesn't have to be that way. So let's say hello to the voices, sit them down for a cuppa and nut out a way to work together.

Michael Sugrue joined us way back in episode 36 to share his personal story around the trauma and mental health roller coaster ride he experienced around a major incident in his law enforcement career. In this previous episode Michael recounted in vivid detail the moment he fired his weapon and took a human life... the moment he had to do so, in order to save the innocent lives of many. The incident earned him Walnut Creek PD Distinguished Service Medal in 2014, yet not without years of controversy and administrative betrayal.
Today we talk about these more recent years of recovery, healing and diving even deeper beyond those triggering trauma experiences to find what else lay beneath from childhood. Michael has co-authored a book with a psychologist, proving to be a cathartic process and one which has become a valuable resource for anyone looking to learn life again in harmony with PTSI.

Hands up if you've got ya'self another podcast bestie... *raises hand*
It sure didn't take many microseconds before I decided Kelly McGonigal was cut from the same cloth as I (but a from the far brainier section of the fabric, of course). United in a love for movement and curiosity for the mind-body connection, I couldn't have loved this conversation more.
Kelly is a psychologist, an author and an educator who has not only published The Joy of Movement, The Science of Compassion, The Upside of Stress and The Will Power Instinct, but also a Top 20 TED Talk, the 2013 How To Make Stress Your Friend. So of course, I seize the opportunity to understand from Kelly's well researched perspective, how we can better manage stress and know when to step up and apply a little, or when to press pause and rest for a moment. Is it more important to manage our bodies or to manage our minds?
Chances are you're already so excited to hear from Kelly, you haven't even gotten this far into the show notes... Enjoy!

It's fair to say when the vast majority of us hear the word Dementia, we are likely to bring to mind heads of grey and faces deeply etched from lives long and well lived. So, as you can imagine, I was taken aback when today's guest Kate Swaffer shared with me that she experienced her first symptoms at the spritely age of 35 and was diagnosed with Younger Onset Dementia at 49.
This conversation brought to light just how very far we have fallen short as a society when it comes to supporting those who experience this progressively debilitating condition. Sure, supporting families and loved ones through their own inevitable experience of grief and loss is crucial. But Kate's experience was likened to being told to go home, take care of her affairs and get ready to die. Ouch... do better us.
Who is Kate, anyway? She's an advocate, an author and a speaker who is taking Dementia by the you-know-what's and making sure that she continues a life well lived whilst creating some much-needed ripple effects for those young and not-so-young whose paths Dementia has crossed.
