  • Ruud Kleinpaste on planting strawberries
They are available in shops now with many varieties available including a good producer 'Cama Rosa'.
Now’s the time to put the beds together:
After all the rain you can quickly assess where the garden is prone to inundation (not good!)
Be careful not to compact the soil when it’s soaking wet – aerate it and add organic matter
Weed-free; (no blinking TWITCH!!!); good drainage; slightly raised.
Work in good, rotted compost so it’s all nice and fluffy.
Mulch is seriously important to keep ripening berries off the soil (Rots!!)
Dark compost mulch with perhaps some barley straw on top of that.
Anything to keep fruit off the soil: bark, crushed shell, gravel, weedmat???
I’d rather use straw or fine bark.
NETTING is also very important: birds!!
Either build a low cage so you can drape bird net over the top, or use hoops to make a netted space
Keep the patch weed-free as it reduces shading and competition in the root zone.
    If you haven’t got a lot of space, use a large wooden box to grow them in;
    at least 25 cm deep.
Fill it with good potting mix and let the strawberries “hang over the edge, if you like.
Disadvantage of this method is you have to water them constantly, especially when the rain has stopped and temperatures are rising!

  • Nici Wickes: Green cheesy pie
This pie a great way to get in some greens, which we all know are nutritious and in winter the more the better!
1 quantity of pastry – see below
1 head broccoli - chopped roughly
2 big handfuls spinach leaves, shredded
    Large handful of parsley, chopped
    2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup grated cheese – any is good but aged cheddar is fantastic
    1 heaped tablespoon cornflour
    1 tsp sea salt
    ½ tsp cracked black pepper
    ¼ tsp chilli flakes
    Lemon zest (optional)
    1. Heat oven to 180 C.
    2. Place everything (except pastry obviously!) in a big bowl and mix well.
    3. Roll out pastry into a large rectangle. Tumble the filling down the middle, dampen pastry edges and bring long edges together, pinching to seal, then tuck in ends. Transfer to a lined oven tray and set it seam-side down. Cut some slashes in the top, brush with milk and bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
    4. Cool slightly then slice and serve.
    FLAKY PASTRY
Makes enough dough for one double or two single-crust pies.
    1 ½ cups plain flour
    1 tsp salt
    175g butter, very cold
    ¾ cup ice cold water
    1. Combine flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle over butter cubes and rub them in by hand – take your time and have some patience. – until they’re evenly distributed and about the size of peas.
    2. Start by drizzling in half of the ice-cold water and work quickly with a knife to mix it in. Keep drizzling water and mixing in - you’ll probably need most but not all of it - to bring it together until it resembles a claggy mess (avoid adding too much water, you don’t want it wet)! Deftly mix with your hands, gathering any stray bits from the bowl. Dust a bench with flour and briefly knead the pastry to bring it together, flatten to a disc then wrap and chill for 30 minutes or until ready to use.

  • Jack Tame: Donald Trump is dividing America in the most ugliest way
It’s kind of a funny time to be working in a job where you’re encouraged to share your opinions. I think working on radio is maybe a bit like working in comedy at the moment, in that there’s this huge character dominating so much of the World’s attention, who’s dominating so much news coverage, it almost seems too obvious to talk about him.
On Saturday mornings, I purposefully don’t try and talk to you about Donald Trump too much, cos honestly I think most of us get a bit Donald Trump’d out. We get Trump fatigue I think we honestly get sick of him. What’s he done now? Who has he upset?
Whether you support him or you loathe him, the noise that surrounds Donald Trump is unrelenting.
He’s probably the single best symbol of how politics has become so extremely polarised. Everyone is so outraged about everything the other side suggests.
Almost every politician would agree that no party has a monopoly on good ideas but you never hear them accepting or complimenting ideas or policy from the other side.
Anyway, there was a scene I witnessed this week that brought some of these issues into focus for me. Donald Trump speaking at one of his rallies about the US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who was born in Somalia, and came to America as an Asylum seeker. The big angry crowd chanting back to the President. Send Her Back! Send Her Back!
Trump now says he disagreed with the chant. That’s despite the fact he didn’t tell his supporters to stop it, and despite the fact it was his tweeting that inspired it in the first place.
Despite the fact he has openly tried to ban anyone from numerous Muslim majority countries from setting foot in the U.S.
Despite the fact he locks Latino asylum seekers in cages, separates children from their parents, some of the World’s most desperate and underprivileged kids whose parents have tried to escape from gang warfare in Central America and even allows some of them to die in custody.
Despite the fact the justice department brought legal action against Trump for denying housing to African American.
Despite the fact he defended Nazis in Charlottesville, that he perpetuated the Obama Kenya birthism myth.
I said when Trump was elected that I thought it represented a profound betrayal of America’s greatest quality. That quality is Diversity. Think of those words at the Statue of Liberty:
“Give me your tired. Your Poor. Your Huddled Masses yearning to be free.”
Contrast them to the words at Trump’s rally: Send her Back! Send her Back!
I just think we’re maybe watching an incredible breakdown in the World order. Those images this week of people in stars and stripes bandanas, angry and chanting, remind me of so many grand fascist political rallies last century. That isn’t hyperbole. Of course they do. America is dividing in the ugliest way.
So I’m sorry to talk about Trump even if I parsed it as an explanation why I don’t usually talk about Trump. But if I look back at this moment in years to come, I want to know that I didn’t write it off as just another Trump moment. I acknowledged it and we acknowledged it, as something more. As something evil.

  • Andrew Dickens reviews Ed Sheeran's new album
With the steady stream of singles, I've been under-impressed despite the fact they have all done well on radio and streaming.
They seem underdone. Ed's distinctive voice is often disguised through pitch changing and vocoders making him sound like a generic neo soul rap singer.
It's not to say this collection is bad. It's fine but it's not up to Ed's high standards. It feels like its a contractual obligation which he's getting through with a little help from his friends.

  • Ruud Kleinpaste: What you need to know about biodynamic wine
When we select a bottle of wine to take home for dinner we often do not really think about choosing an organic wine, do we?
Next question: How often do you consider purchasing a biodynamic wine?
I went to the organic/biodynamic viticulture Conference in Blenheim a few weeks ago and was amazed how many wineries are looking after their soil, the biodiversity and carbon in their vineyard.
It makes total sense to have practices that minimize the footprint on the Planet and more and more wine growers “get” that.
    What does it mean?
Many different things: No synthetic pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Instead plant in between the rows a host of flowers and crops that feed not just pollinators in the landscape, but also the parasitoids, parasitic wasps and predators that help the growers with pest control inside the developing bunches of grapes. Spoiling pests such as leafrollers and mealybugs.
Growers also use cover crops in between the rows that, when mowed later in the year, provide a heap of carbon stalks that can be recycled back into the soil.
Yep – carbon should be in the soil, not in the air as Carbon Dioxide!
The “chemical” use (only Life-Friendly chemicals!) is the most well-known aspect of organics, of course.
Biodynamics takes it all to a whole different level. It is a practice in not just viticulture, but agriculture/horticulture etc. as well; it is based on the Philosophies of that famous German, Rudolf Steiner, yes the “Steiner School” one!
There are some extra-ordinary key activities and systems that make up the Biodynamic growing practice; things like CPP (Cow Pat Pit, which is exactly what you think it may be!!) and Preparation 500, involving burying a cow’s horn full of cow manure into the ground for 6 months.
The resulting materials are sweet-smelling and well broken down. The nutrient-rich materials are stirred within a lot of water (potentizing the water) and sprayed over the crops.
This “dynamized solution” is designed to enhance plant growth and improve the quality of the crops. The spiritual theory behind it is that this breathes vitality and new life into the earth.
It’s fascinating to watch and to hear all the theories derived from good old Rudolf; as a scientist and long-time spotter of bad science this all sounds a bit religious to me, really, but lately I have started to realise that whatever they’re doing, the results are pretty special (try the wines, for instance!).
But most importantly, when you visit these vineyards you can actually see (and measure) the enhanced biodiversity and remarkable soil conditions. And it is not just that they are drawing the carbon back into the soil, they live with generous values too, both Social and Biological.
So, that’s gotta be a good thing, huh?
A great list of Organic wine producers can be found here: https://www.organicwinenz.com/
And you’ll know quite a large percentage of them, I bet.
    Who knew?
