Seahawks Forever w/ Dan Viens

Leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft, we primarily heard about three linebackers with first-round talent. Isaiah Simmons of Clemson, Kenneth Murray of Oklahoma and Patrick Queen of LSU. But, apart from one mock draft at CBS Sports, none seemed to dial in on the idea of Brooks having first round talent. The Seattle Seahawks made him just the fourth defensive player drafted in the first round in the Pete Carroll and John Schneider era and Samuel Gold joins the podcast to talk about what he saw breaking down the film and how analysts may not have been looking back to 2018 to his ability to drop back into coverage. The three days of the NFL draft have wrapped up, but to get some insight behind some of the picks throughout the draft and how the team approached certain picks, we're going to go back and look at some of the post-day press conferences throughout the 2020 draft. John Schneider and Pete Carroll met with the media after Day 1 and we got to hear how impressed Pete was with Jordyn Brooks during their interview at the combine, how he came across as a leader in college, and how a familiarity with coaches can help play a role in the scouting process. Coach Carroll says they don't have a defined role set for Brooks at the moment, but he wants to look for a way to allow him to excel early.

The Seattle Seahawks moved back into the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, giving up a sixth round selection in 2021 to the Miami Dolphins, and drafting Stephen Sullivan from LSU. Sullivan was officially listed as a tight end and played tight end at the Senior Bowl this year, but Zachary Junda, editor from And the Valley Shook, says his blocking rates similarly to former Seahawks tight end Jimmy Graham. The selection of Sullivan helped LSU tie the record for most players selected in the draft since the format changed to seven rounds. Zachary talks about why it was Sullivan and not Thaddeus Moss who helped the Tigers tie the draft record.

The Seahawks waited until the end of the sixth round to take their first wide receiver in the draft after drafting the position in the second, fourth and seventh rounds last year. Brent Taylor, editor of Roll Bama Roll, was on the show last week previewing some of the SEC prospects and comes back on the show to talk about what he's seen from Swain. Taylor, a Seahawks fan in addition to his Alabama football fandom, also talks about Seattle's pick that intrigues him the most.

The Seattle Seahawks picked up a fifth round pick when they traded out of the last pick of the second round with the Carolina Panthers. The Seahawks added a pass rusher when they picked Darrell Taylor after they moved up on Day 2 and now they've added a player with a similar height and weight with Syracuse pass rusher Alton Robinson. EJ Snyder, Senior Draft Analyst at Windy City Gridiron, says he thinks Robinson's potential is greater than Darrell Taylor, but there were some questions about the consistency of Robinson's play that dropped him into the fifth round.

DeeJay Dallas didn't have the big numbers in college like some of the earlier running backs off the board. Only a little more than 250 attempts over his past three season at Florida's University of Miami. EJ Snyder of Windy City Gridiron returns to the podcast to talk about how Dallas could be a better professional running back than he was in college, because he will be a lot more productive behind an NFL offensive line. Even with the blocking that he worked with, he still averaged 3.5 yards after contact.

The Seahawks are set to have four picks on Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Draft and with the first pick, they selected tight end Colby Parkinson of Standford. His highlights include his low drop-rate, his big catch radius, and a hair game that is on point. He wasn't featured much as a blocker at Stanford, which is a departure from what Seattle tends to look for from a tight end. Samuel Gold joins the show to talk about what that could mean for the tight ends already on the Seahawks roster.

The last time the Seahawks stayed at their original first round pick was back in 2011 when they selected James Carpenter out of Alabama. With the Green Bay Packers moving up ahead of Seattle to take a quarterback, Seattle decided to stay put and select Jordyn Brooks, linebacker out of Texas Tech.
