  • Initial 53-man roster breakdown, Jadeveon Clowney trade finalized
The Seattle Seahawks released their initial 53-man roster on Saturday with the Jadeveon Clowney trade not yet finalized. To make sure the team didn't lose anyone critically important on the roster, they decide to let Geno Smith go initially before adding him back to the roster on Sunday. Rob Staton of seahawksdraftblog.com joins the show to talk about his thoughts on the trade for Clowney and why he thinks this should make General Manager John Schneider a lock for executive of the year (an award he should have won for what the Seahawks were able to do in the 2012 NFL Draft). Rob also notes the striking amount of size on the Seahawks now have on the defensive line, and we discuss a defensive lineman they added to the practice squad who had been mocked to Seattle in the first round of the 2019 draft.  Subscribe to the Field Gulls Podcast via:Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify |Overcast | Pocket Casts | Stitcher | Castbox | Subscribe on Android | PlayerFM | RSS Support the show with a recurring monthly donation: GetInTheFlock.com

  • TRADE! Seahawks to acquire Jadeveon Clowney in a deal with the Houston Texans
It was a big morning for the Seahawks ahead of the 53-man roster cuts with reports that Jadeveon Clowney is coming to Seattle in a trade for Jacob Martin, Barkevious Mingo and a 2020 3rd round pick. Joe Fann, Seahawks Insider for NBC Sports Northwest, joins the show to talk about the trade with the Houston Texans.  We talk about what the position the Texans were in when it looked like a potential trade with the Dolphins wasn't going to happen, the hit rate for the Seahawks when it comes to 3rd round draft picks, and the potential that Clowney could end up being a one-year rental player for the Seahawks. The only downside is if Jacob Martin goes on to develop into a solid player and Clowney does leave after this next year and the Seahawks aren't able to capitalize off his efforts. For now, it looks like a huge win for the Seahawks and John Schneider going into the 2019 NFL season.

  • Why a Jadeveon Clowney trade makes sense for the Seahawks
Brandan joins Anthony Nachreiner on 600 AM KGEZ this week to talk about why the Seahawks should be interested in trading for Jadeveon Clowney, the exciting part about this part of the preseason, and how Russell Wilson looked in the latest game against the Chargers. C.J. Prosise hopefully showed enough to turn himself into a guy who the Texans might be interested in trading for. We close out the show hat to expect in some of the position battles ahead of the 53-man roster cuts and talk about Andrew Luck's decision to retire and why it's not shocking that fans were upset to learn about the news the way they did.

  • Projecting the Seahawks 53-man roster with Alistair Corp
This Saturday at 1pm PT is the deadline for the Seahawks to have their roster cut down from 90 players to 53. Alistair Corp joins the show to talk about his latest roster projection going into the final preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. We start out on offense and discuss whether or not C.J. Prosise deserves to remain on the roster and whether or not the team will carry a fullback into Week 1. Wide receiver has questions regarding who will be the fifth and maybe sixth spot in that group and there are questions of who to keep at tight end. Fortunately there aren't any difficult decisions when it comes to the three special teams players.
After the break we take a look at the defensive side of the ball and the many questions on the defensive line. Could they decide to only carry three interior defenders so the team can carry upwards of six defensive ends to help provide depth with so many injuries going into the first week of the season. Linebacker provides the greatest amount of depth, which means that it will be tough to keep Austin Calitro, Shaquem Griffin and rookie linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven. Alistair thinks that despite a strong preseason, DeShawn Shead may not be able to hold a spot on the roster considering the amount of depth and young talent competing at safety with McDougald, Thompson, Blair and Amadi all appearing to be locks to make the final 53-man roster.

  • Preseason week 3 recap: Seahawks run game dominates, including C.J. Prosise
The Seahawks defeat the Los Angeles Chargers in week 3 of the preseason and Russell Wilson looked good once again behind a strong offensive line. Rob Staton of Seahawks Draft Blog joins Brandan to talk about the game and how mcuh has changed to now have the line seemingly as a strength of the team (2:52). In a bit of a frustrating development, C.J. Prosise looked great on his carries (6:09), and it makes you wonder how things would have changed in recent years with a healthy Prosise at running back.
Tyler locked at John Ursua both had big gains in the game (8:40), Rob talks about the suddenness that Ursua has demonstrated in limited time and how we should expect to see him on the 53-man roster. Who else gets kept at that position (10:23), particularly with Gary Jennings and Jazz Ferguson not showing much? While the offense appears to be the strength of the team, Rob has some positive notes with regard to the Seahawks defense (17:40).
After the break, Rob and Brandan talk about the news of Andrew Luck's retirement (24:22) and reflect back on the Seahawks 2012 Draft class (27:05). Rob wonders how the Seahawks would be perceived now had they selected Russell Wilson at 15 overall in 2012? (28:50).
Over on the Seahawks Draft Blog, Rob has a recent post on the college football players to watch in 2019 (34:33) and how he lists Jordan Love among Top 3 QBs to watch in college this season (38:25). We look at an early mock draft to discuss a Michigan State pass rusher that is linked to the Seahawks (40:09).

  • The difference between preseason wins and preseason losses with the Nach On Sports
This week's Seahawks interview with Brandan and Anthony Nachreiner on the Nach on Sports starts by setting the record straight when it comes to preseason wins and preseason losses. The guys talk about the shift in how the offensive line is seemingly a strength of the Seahawks offense and the secondary might be one of the biggest concerns, which is the complete opposite of what we were talking about three to five years ago.
We spotlight performances by Poona Ford and DeShawn Shead on defense for the Seahawks against the Vikings and Brandan talks about what he wants to see from the Seahawks in the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Can they hold a historically dominant preseason quarterback in Phillip Rivers to minimal yards and touchdown? How will the Seahawks offense respond if they're put in that kind of position in the preseason. Whatever happens it will be the last big opportunity to see the top starters until Week 1 of the regular season against the Bengals.

  • Preseason week 2 recap: Several questions answered in Seahawks 25-19 loss to Vikings
In the second game of the preseason, the Seahawks pick up their first loss against the Vikings, 25-19. Matty Brown joins Brandan to recap the loss and talk about the biggest takeaways as Seahawks fans had the opportunity to see Russell Wilson on the field against an opposing team for the first time since his record contract. While his time on the field only resulted in a field goal in his two drives, the offense moved the ball well and the game helped to answer a few questions we had going into the preseason.
On offense, Lockett stands out as the top receiver and Jaron Brown looks locked into the next spot. David Moore and D.K. Metcalf likely fill out the top four spots. Brandan and Matty talk about why Jazz Furguson isn't likely to get one of those spots, particularly after his performance against the Vikings. Ugo Amadi provided us with one of the biggest highlights from the game on special teams and Poona Ford stood out on defense against the Vikings starting offensive line.
Matty talks about his latest article breaking down the play that led to an interception by DeShawn Shead, who provided the only Seahawks touchdown of the game. He also discusses an upcoming article that will focus on what we can expect from opposing offenses in how they'll attack a defense that no longer has Earl Thomas. With Tedric Thompson the presumed Week 1 starter, can he show some of the ball hawking abilities he showed in college?

  • Lynch's performance versus the Broncos, Vikings preview with the Nach on Sports
Each week I have a chance to go on a local radio show in Montana called the Nach on Sports. This week, Anthony and I talk about Paxton Lynch's performance against the Broncos and why we still need to see another strong performance before we want to think of him as a potential backup for Russell Wilson. We talk about the running back depth being a disappointment against the Broncos and whether the pass rush or secondary is more of a concern as the Seahawks  continue through the preseason and into the regular season.

  • Preseason week 1 recap: Seahawks show off improved depth in win over Broncos
Rob Staton joins Brandan to talk about the game, what stood out, and what we're looking forward to seeing in the next game against the Vikings. With the Seahawks getting their first win of the preseason out of the way in Week 1 against the Broncos, we don't have to worry about another 0-4 start before the regular season this year. Sure we all know that doesn't matter, just as penalties and replay reviews in the preseason penalties don't matter, but we all manage to get worked up -- because football is BACK!
One of the reasons why the Seahawks were able to get the 22-14 win was because of their depth this year. When we watched the team in 2018, they struggled to hold teams and put points up on the board late in games. That wasn't the case against the Broncos as Paxton Lynch had a solid game against his former team, even bowling over third stringers to get into the end zone for a touchdown. Let's see how he does against the Vikings second string defense before we start to get excited about his potential as a backup for Russell Wilson.
