  • Sober To The Cor with Cordelia May (Surviving Addiction, Anxiety, Shame, and Sexual Assault)
    Happy Birthday Cordelia 07-20-2021
Cordelia May is a 30 something woman who's been in recovery for almost two years from alcohol and drugs. Cordelia wanted to create a safe space to share her sobriety journey, thoughts, and hope with anyone who needs it. Whether you're in recovery, sober, sober curious, teetotaler, etc, you are welcome here! Instagram @sobertothecor
    Check out Cordelia's Blog: ( https://sobertothecordelia.blogspot.com/ )
    POWERFUL EXCERPT FROM HER BLOG:
    SOBRIETY SAVED MY LIFE.
Getting sober saved my life, and it can save yours too.
TW: Alcohol and drug use, sexual assault, mentions of suicidal thoughts, and death.
"I knew that it was the end for me, I had to get sober. It was a terrifying thought that I would never have a beer on the patio, champagne on Christmas, or baileys in my coffee on a long weekend ever again, but it was the only way I would get better.
I did it on my own for 7 months. I'm lucky enough to have an amazing support system. I was managing just fine until I ended a 5-year relationship with my best friend, moved back home to my dad's house, and then found out I was getting transferred from the store I had worked at for a decade. This was a lot. Anxious people have a hard enough time dealing with positive change, let alone some heavy negative shit! One night I was coming home from work, and life just seemed to be too much for me. I wanted to be numb, to forget what was going on just for a night. A thought crossed my mind, "If I got to the bar down the street and drink, no one would know. I could just sit there and pound a few beers...maybe hit up one of my old dealers and get a half g..." This little daydream stopped me in my tracks...I felt like I had lost control of my sobriety. Instead of walking to that bar, I pulled out my phone and messaged a friend who I knew was in a 12 step program and asked if I could come to a meeting with them.
I knew nothing about the program and had no idea what to expect. The amount of love and community I felt in that first meeting was amazing, I hadn't realized how isolated I had felt the past 7 months. I worked the program and it did change my life. The steps are some serious self-reflection work and opened my eyes to issues I didn't realize I had. It's allowed me to be comfortable in my own skin and let go of my past. Being alone with my thoughts was my literal nightmare for the first twenty-nine years of my life, and now? Ya girl meditates on the regular, AND I LOVE IT. As much as it's helped me, 12 Step programs aren't for everyone. Programs aren't the only way one can recover from addiction. Everyone's sober journey is as unique and special as the person on them. Getting sober encouraged me to finally deal with my mental health. I got a proper diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Depression, and am now on medication that has helped me cope with it." - Cordelia May

NICAMB: What is PTG with Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky( https://youtu.be/9PG71LHinQc ) Sonja Lyubomirsky is a Russian-born American professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside and author of the bestseller The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach
Post-traumatic growth (PTG) is a theory that explains this kind of transformation following trauma. It was developed by psychologists Richard Tedeschi, PhD, and Lawrence Calhoun, PhD, in the mid-1990s, and holds that people who endure psychological struggle following adversity can often see positive growth afterward.
"People develop new understandings of themselves, the world they live in, how to relate to other people, the kind of future they might have and a better understanding of how to live life," says Tedeschi.
    Signs of post-traumatic growth
PTG can be confused with resilience, but the two are different constructs (see "The post-traumatic growth inventory" below).
"PTG is sometimes considered synonymous with resilience because becoming more resilient as a result of struggle with trauma can be an example of PTG—but PTG is different from resilience, says Kanako Taku, PhD, associate professor of psychology at Oakland University, who has both researched PTG and experienced it as a survivor of the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan.
"Resiliency is the personal attribute or ability to bounce back," says Taku. PTG, on the other hand, refers to what can happen when someone who has difficulty bouncing back experiences a traumatic event that challenges his or her core beliefs, endures psychological struggle (even a mental illness such as post-traumatic stress disorder), and then ultimately finds a sense of personal growth. It's a process that "takes a lot of time, energy and struggle," Taku says.
Someone who is already resilient when trauma occurs won't experience PTG because a resilient person isn't rocked to the core by an event and doesn't have to seek a new belief system, explains Tedeschi. Less resilient people, on the other hand, may go through distress and confusion as they try to understand why this terrible thing happened to them and what it means for their world view.
To evaluate whether and to what extent someone has achieved growth after a trauma, psychologists use a variety of self-report scales. One that was developed by Tedeschi and Calhoun is the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) (Journal of Traumatic Stress, 1996). It looks for positive responses in five areas:
    Appreciation of life.
    Relationships with others.
    New possibilities in life.
    Personal strength.
    Spiritual change.
The scale is being revised to add new items that will expand the "spiritual change" domain, says Tedeschi. This is being done "to incorporate more existential themes that should resonate with those who are more secular" as well as reflect cross-cultural differences in perceptions of spirituality.

  • KETOSIS AND ADDICTION RECOVERY (The Dangers of Sugar, High Insulin, and Diabetes)
In this episode POP Buchanan shares a powerup talk from Dr. Eric Berg. In this talk Dr. Eric Berg will discuss the biggest thing that is missing from addiction recovery. If you’re recovering from alcohol, for example, you have to realize that alcohol acts like a carbohydrate in the body. However, alcohol itself isn’t a carbohydrate, which means that you’ll have the fluctuations of blood sugar issues.   The symptoms of these blood sugar highs and lows are: • Anxiety • Exhaustion • Moodiness • Cravings • Dizziness • Confusion  When you are at something like alcoholics anonymous, for example, you are going to replace alcohol with carbs and sugars—think doughnuts, cookies, and sweetened coffee.  What we’re really dealing with are nutrient deficiencies. Addictive substances pull nutrients out of your tissues.   As your blood sugar fluctuates, you develop something called insulin resistance. When you have insulin resistance, you have a difficult time absorbing nutrients in the first place.   So not only is the alcohol (or other substance) causing nutrient deficiencies directly, it also causes nutrient deficiencies by contributing to insulin resistance.   The best things to help combat these problems are:  • Keto • Intermittent fasting • MCT oil • Nutritional yeast • Trace minerals • Vitamin C -----

What is the Ketogenic Diet or Ketosis?  • Ketosis means you're in a state of fat burning.  • When you get into ketosis and fat burning, the fat breaks down into what are called ketones. The body can use ketones as an alternative fuel source. This is a much better fuel source than sugar fuel.   • The healthy ketogenic diet is a version of the regular ketogenic diet based on a principle where you have to "get healthy first, then lose the weight." "Get healthy" refers to eating healthy, high-quality foods that provide all of the nutrients your body needs.   What is Intermittent Fasting?  • Intermittent fasting is a pattern of eating and not eating. Instead of doing 3-6 meals a day plus snacking, you're eating less frequently. This is important because every time you eat, you raise a hormone called insulin. Too much insulin is very dangerous in the body. With the healthy keto diet and intermittent fasting, we're reducing the excess insulin.   How to Lower Insulin?  • Consume fewer carbohydrates (sugar, refined carbs, grains, pasta, cereal, biscuits, waffles, juice, alcohol, etc.)  • Eat less frequently   Symptoms of High Insulin: • Belly fat  • High blood pressure  • High cholesterol  • Fatigue (especially after eating) • Decreased cognitive function (lack of focus, poor memory)  • Moodiness (irritable, depressed, grouchy) • Cravings • You're hungry all of the time (especially in-between meals)  Benefits of the Healthy Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting: • Weight loss  • Reduced inflammation  • Supports cognitive function  • Supports mood • Making the body function better

Mental health benefits of creative activities

    Full Article ( https://nyctherapy.com/therapists-nyc-blog/creativity-is-your-secret-advantage-for-mental-health-and-well-being/ )
"At the Therapy Group of NYC we believe creativity is a good thing, too. Scientists are continuing to uncover encouraging evidence that engaging in creative activities — from painting to potting plants to planning parties — is beneficial to your mental health and well-being.
In 2015, psychologist and art therapist Dr. Cathy Malchiodi cited multiple studies confirming that being creative can increase positive emotions, lessen depressive symptoms, reduce stress, decrease anxiety, and even improve immune system functioning. A 2016 study in The Journal of Positive Psychology supported these earlier findings, concluding that “spending time on creative goals during a day is associated with higher activated positive affect (PA) on that day.”
Positive affect is the extent to which people experience positive moods, such as joy, happiness, and optimism. Higher positive affect lowers stress and “expands our perspective so that we notice more possibilities in our lives,” wellness coach Elizabeth Scott says. “This enables us to more easily take advantage of these resources.” Ms. Scott says that if you experience more positive affect, for example, you may be less prone to dwell on the negative and may put more focus on the possibilities in your life." - Brad Brenner, Ph.D.
