Today Amber discusses something that plagues so many women over 40, and that is emotional eating. She breaks down the two most common reasons why women have a hard time staying consistent with their nutrition. The first is that you may have a problem with falling off the wagon time and time again. You can't stay consistent when you get so caught up in staying perfect and adhering to unrealistic rules. This sets you up for failure because diets were never meant for the long term! The second is fixating on nutrition and fitness. This doesn't mean forgetting those things, but doing nothing to change habits, emotions, changing limiting beliefs, etc., won't help you to maintain who you want to become. When there's no foundation to maintain the goals you've reached, and life gets in the way, you fall right back off the wagon again.
Amber focuses on emotional eating and what it looks like and the reasons behind it. Foods can be comforting and can be associated with fond memories. She goes on to explain that there are different levels of emotional eating and some can be ok at times while others can have a major negative impact on the body. More important than the frequency or the amount of eating, ask yourself what the intention is behind the emotional eating?
Amber shares her tips to begin implementing change into your eating habits and get in the right direction. Look at the origin story. Where did this come from? Can I understand it enough to forgive myself? Being aware and forgiving yourself for your mistakes is crucial to progress. Second, discern whether you are emotionally eating or if you are actually hungry. Before reaching for an unhealthy snack, take the "hunger" out of it and eat a healthy snack so you can evaluate your emotions. Lastly, use simple coping mechanisms such as breathing, meditation, friends to call or talk to, playlists of songs that pump you up, etc. Tune in for more on these tips on how to take control of your eating habits!

Sleep is KING! As we age and our hormones shift, sleep is something that can suffer. There are lots of quick fixes, but in the long-term, they aren't a sustainable solution. Today's guest, Julien Jagtenberg is sharing some killer and innovative technology that can help improve your sleep through breath. He also brings us tips and tricks to help lead you to better sleep quality.
Drawing inspiration from his own mother's battle with sleep deprivation, Julian wanted to find a natural solution for her. This is how he found the power of breathing to help his mom's sleep quality and many others with their sleep deprivation.
Julian delves into how sleep is the key to health. Many of the health issues we see today are due to lack of sleep and poor sleep quality. We tend to obsess over exercise, weight loss, and many people struggle with mental health and it can all be tied to lack of sleep. However, we can build our health up and use the best medicine to heal our bodies, and that is good quality sleep.
Why do the latest and greatest sleep gadgets not work? Well, that's because restlessness (stress, and anxiety) is the root cause of most sleep issues. Julian read about the effects of holding a baby on your chest and the subconscious mimicking of the breathing pattern of the baby and how it can help calm the nervous system. This is how his concept of the breath being the key component of his development of somnox. Many of the trackers we use at home are not always accurate and just confirm and reinforce our poor sleep quality and this doesn't help. In fact, it can worsen sleep deprivation from more stress and anxiety. These trackers don't help us solve the problem of poor sleep quality!
According to Julian, the better way and the more holistic approach to measure your sleep hygiene is going to be asking yourself how you feel when you wake up in the morning. It's time to look at what we can do to make ourselves feel better with tangible tools. That means making sure to establish a sleep ritual (going into sleep mode), using breath-work exercises, writing thoughts down and getting them on paper before going to sleep. Somnox can assist in the breathwork piece of your sleep ritual and can help you improve your overall health.

Amber's discussion with James begins with his childhood and growing up in southern California watching his mother expand her business into an empire. As a child and an adolescent, James was fascinated by many different religions. In this episode, Amber shares great tips on how to shift your mindset and finally break up with the scale and not let the 3-digit number dictate how you will feel for the rest of the day. It's really interesting how the number on the scale can impact the emotional estate of those looking for fat loss goals. Suddenly, your weight is no longer data to analyze; it becomes a piece of evidence that you're not working hard enough, right?
What most people don't know, however, is that the number on the scale can be influenced by many and many variables: if you had a good night of sleep, if you had enough water the day before, if you had an intense workout that morning, if you are fasted of had a big meal moments before. All of these factors impact your weight at that specific moment.
So, why do we feel so 'emotionally hijacked' by the scale to the point that it can influence our self-worth and self-image?
For many years the scale has been a symbol for both fat loss and muscle gain goals. But other aspects – non-scale aspects – can also tell if you are succeeding: your clothes fit differently, you're looking different in the mirror, people are noticing changes, etc.
Not to mention the specifics of fat loss vs. weight loss. There's a thing called body recomposition that can help explain why the number on the scale is not going down (you might be changing fat for muscle mass). Tune in to listen to the whole episode and learn how to quit the scale obsession!

Dr. Brooke Scheller is a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition, Certified Nutrition Specialist, and expert in nutrition for alcohol use by impacting gut and brain health. In this episode, she talks about how alcohol impacts the gut, our nutrition habits, and even the brain.
Alcohol consumption is such an individualized topic and is different for everybody. However, it's fundamental to be conscious of the impacts alcohol use – for short or long periods – can cause on the body. Every organism is unique but alcohol has the power of influencing all of the other systems in the body.
Sometimes alcohol needs to be eliminated for the good of all the other body functions, but most people don't know this. Vitamin and nutrient deficiency is also a victim of consuming too much alcohol, which in parallel can cause mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Dr. Brooke also explains the connection between alcohol consumption and gut health.
In your case, what triggers the act of drinking alcohol? It's important to be aware of all the moments – parties, dinners at the end of the week, moments of stress and anxiety – that might trigger the drinking. In addition, Dr. Brooke explains that nutrition habits can help with decreasing alcohol consumption. Tune in!

In this episode, Amber talks about how to deal with and handle different types of grief. Whether it's a relationship breakup, a divorce, or a death in the family, the grieving process can hit us hard. Our body does not differentiate pain so every trauma despite being different from one another, has similar effects on our behavior.
It's also interesting to make a parallel between all these types of grief and the sense of loss we get from each one of them because we are indeed losing something (or someone) in our lives. There will be part of your life you will feel is missing, and that's ok. One of the most important things we can do for ourselves is to allow ourselves to go through the process – as a way of healing.
The only way is through.
To help you handle these difficult times, Amber shares a few tools that will help ease your mind. Acknowledging and accepting grief are the main steps, Amber says, and it's also important to remember that as time goes by, we all learn how to handle grief more easily. Tune in!

In this episode, Amber interviews Ryan Haddon. Ryan is a Life and Spiritual Coach who is a master at helping people change their subconscious for good. Today, they talk about a variety of topics that are fundamental to understanding how our mind works and why the way we talk to ourselves matters.
Ryan explains that the foundation of her work is passing the knowledge she acquired throughout the years to other women, helping and assisting them, creating a 'golden chain'. So many women outsource their worth to their physical appearance and sometimes they end up forgetting that internal beauty is more essential than the external.
In addition, Ryan shares the importance of asking ourselves the question: 'How am I today?' and making an effort to feel good. Sometimes our thoughts indeed trick us into thinking something's wrong, but that's just the subconscious, Ryan explains. And to change the subconscious (it's hard but it's doable) we need to focus on some practices like meditation and affirmations to create that change day by day.
Amber and Ryan also talk about aging, some of the most important health hacks to feel good – and look good –, and what it means to have a 'self-care' moment. Tune in!
