Everywhere you look, there is information about what kind of diet works best. Although restrictive diets can produce results for you, they will not necessarily be sustainable, so your weight loss will not be long-term. You can begin to see real progress on your journey when you address the core issues rather than just the symptoms you are trying to stop.
Historically, dietitians have followed the Food Pyramid, but now Doctors view dietitians as abandoning nutritional science in favor of HAES/Intuitive Eating. Michelle Shapiro RD, our podcast guest today, calls herself the "Queen of the Middle Ground" because she strives to bridge the differences between dietitians.
It is very divisive in the nutrition world now, with different RDs adhering to different approaches. Consequently, Michelle believes that the patient is left out of the equation. Using a holistic approach, Michelle empowers each client to become their own expert on their own body.
In this episode, Michelle shares her journey to becoming an integrative/functional dietitian, describes functional medicine, and discusses the importance of language and mindset in healing.

Many people, especially women, are constantly striving to change their bodies, seeing their bodies as ongoing projects. It is fine to have body goals like losing weight or gaining muscle, but the problem comes when we impose restrictive diets and unpleasant exercises on our bodies. These are aggressive methods that cannot be sustained. According to Nina Manolson, our podcast guest for today, this type of behavior is antagonistic to the body.
Nina developed an antagonistic relationship with her body at the age of nine, and once she healed that relationship, she made it her life's work to help women develop trusting and respectful relationships with their bodies. Nina's work is called Body-Peace because she helps her clients gain peace with their bodies. Nina focuses on helping people cultivate supportive relationships with their bodies through compassion.
Nina suggests that whenever you feel broken or as though your body is causing you problems, take a step back and realize that the problem isn't you or your body but rather the relationship you have with it. The negative self-talk and restrictions many women subject themselves to in an effort to achieve the body they think they need are often what keep them on a diet roller coaster.
In this episode, we discuss how to shift your mindset about your body to be in support of it instead of against it, how to begin making sustainable changes that will help you feel at peace with your body and your food, and how to dig deeper to understand why you may want to change your body in the first place. Nina will even share some of her poems about body peace.

It is so important for us to distinguish between the truth and the false stories we have created in our head. Those stories can lead us to talk very negatively to ourselves and constantly put ourselves down by thinking that we aren't good enough, or are not doing enough. It is about time we ditch that negative self talk track we tend to play in our brains, and learn how to have compassion for ourselves. This episode is a follow up to Amber's previous solo episode 119 in which she dove into a topic that came up in one of her coaching sessions. In this episode, Amber covers the topic of learning to love yourself for who you are without having your happiness tied to external and variable things.
Our upbringing plays a huge role in the thought patterns that we carry into adulthood, even if we don't feel as though we have major traumas or events in our lives that would impact us so significantly. Being bullied as a child, or having someone make a comment about our size can become imprinted on us and without realizing it, we store those thoughts and ideas and let them dictate how we feel about ourselves. It is time we stop doing that and become aware of the fact that these negative thoughts about ourselves are not serving us.
Happiness is an inside job, so the key is to become aware of how we talk to ourselves, discover the origin of the way we feel about ourselves, and have compassion for the younger version of us that was shaped by events in our life. Then, we have to untie our happiness from any external factors such as our weight, other people, or anything else that isn't who we are inside, which is a badass mama that deserves to feel amazing in her skin.

A successful weight loss journey doesn't start with a list of things to do and not do. As with any goal worth pursuing, it really all starts with your mindset going into the journey: Where are you now and what has been stopping you from getting to the next level?
By getting clear about your weaknesses, you can put together the right strategy to help you fill those gaps.
This is a powerful concept, though sadly foreign to many of us. Most people want that immediate gratification. They're not willing to do the work of building a strong foundation. But this is exactly the piece that separates those who enjoy their rewards for the long haul from those who fall back into old habits sooner or later.
Unfortunately, diet culture doesn't focus on getting to the root cause of what's holding us back from reaching our goals. Instead of working on healing our relationship with food, we're told to impose a bunch of restrictions on what, when, and how much to eat.
But as today's guest explains, a little bit of delayed gratification goes a long way. Change is always tough, but if it means breaking a vicious cycle of unhealthy habits and transforming your health and wellness for the better, it's absolutely worth trying something new!
Listen in and learn how to go from reactive to proactive by taming your primitive brain and tapping more intentionally into your prodigy brain, the four basics of sustainable weight loss (which form the acronym SELF), and how to become content with giving up alcohol!

There is often a much deeper reason for wanting to achieve a certain number on the scale or a certain size in jeans. Our society is accustomed to externalizing our value to things like a weight or size goal, but this often results in constant dieting or an even worse relationship with food. This is especially common among women, and we learn these habits early from society and how we were raised.
It's fine to set goals, but on this podcast, our focus is sustainability, food freedom, and healing from the inside out. If you are internally driven to get into shape or reach any other goal, the lifestyle you'll need to adopt in order to reach that goal will be healthier, and you'll be much more likely to stay committed to it.
If you want to lose 30 pounds, ask yourself, why do I want to lose 30 pounds? Perhaps you want to feel better. Next, ask yourself, why do I want to feel better? It may be that you will be able to show up for your family better. By drilling down your goals like this, you will eventually reach the true reason for what you are trying to accomplish. It is much more powerful to understand the real reason why you are doing what you are doing than relying on a hollow number on the scale. Clarity and a deeper understanding of your core desire will keep you focused. This is why all of Amber's programs begin with clarifying your core desires, understanding your true intention, and getting clear on what your end game is.
Amber's 2-Day free event on November 15th and 16th is the perfect place to start if you would like to do the work of healing from the inside out and having food freedom that is effortless and sustainable. The link to sign up for this event can be found below.

Having physical discomfort and not knowing what your condition is after several test results can be frustrating. In our guest's line of work, he focuses on treating people with physical conditions that may not be immediately obvious. Rather than treating symptoms and taking medications, he takes a holistic approach and addresses the root of the problem.
Dr. Abhi Gautam, an anesthesiologist and entrepreneur, joins Amber on the podcast today. Dr. Gautam is co-founder of Vitruvia™ and pioneer of the revolutionary RELIEF® procedure that has helped top performers and athletes increase their mobility and restore their bodies to pre-injury state with little to no recovery time. Dr. Gautam has worked with many high profile clients such as Tony Robbins, Miguel Cabrera, and David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.
In order to prevent pain from occurring in the first place, Dr. Gautam believes that a strong mind-body connection is essential. His analogy is that our bodies are like cars. If you ignore your car's check engine light long enough, something really bad will eventually happen. When we do not take a moment to breathe, close our eyes, and find quiet time to be introspective, the same thing happens to our bodies. Dr. Gautam argues that despite the divine and mysterious nature of our bodies, they work within a logical framework or schema that identifies us as one human species. According to Dr. Gautam, it's important to trust your body more than what you read or hear about health, but we must first learn to investigate what's happening internally.
During this interview, Dr. Gautam will discuss human anatomy, connective tissue restoration, and how to connect to our bodies. In addition, he will talk about the latest injury prevention techniques as well as the technologies Vitruvia has developed to help those suffering from existing conditions recover and return to their favorite activities as quickly as possible.

In what areas of your life do you feel confident? Maybe it's at work, after you've exercised or when you put on a certain outfit. One of Amber's clients recently told her that she never feels very good in her body because she wears scrubs all the time and feels she does not look good in anything else she wears. Does this dilemma sound familiar to you? There are many women who can relate, but this feeling of not having confidence doesn't have to be your reality. In this episode of Amber's podcast, she shares two strategies you can use to start embodying your future higher self and showing up more confidently today.
Amber discusses where confidence comes from, how to create unbreakable confidence, and how to embody the future self you desire. We've talked about mindset goals repeatedly on this podcast. Making those goals and accomplishing them will lead to life transformations. In a later exchange with Amber, the client we just mentioned told Amber that one day she decided to wear a cute outfit at home. She was with the kids and had nowhere to go, but she still put on the outfit because she paused to ask herself: What would future me do? As a result, Amber's client reported that she felt much better. This proves that through interrupting our negative self-talk and taking small steps towards what we envision in our life, we can embody our truest selves.
If you choose to embrace your future self starting from where you are right now, by adopting the lifestyle, habits, and mentality of your future self, a higher version of yourself will emerge.
Amber's program focuses on the same things discussed in today's podcast: embodying one's future self and creating unbreakable radical confidence. She will help them identify what will make them feel more confident, reprogram damaging subconscious thoughts, and identify things that they can incorporate into their lives to help them achieve their goals.

Joining Amber on the podcast today is Krishna Avalon, a subconscious transformation coach, and acupuncturist who has guided over 24,000 clients to transform their subconscious minds to become their best, most empowered selves. Krishna's expertise and work perfectly aligns with the mission and vision of this show, which is to equip women with what they need to be their most empowered selves. In this episode, Krishna will delve into why the subconscious is the place to start when seeking sustainable change as well as why the conscious and subconscious must work together.
Ninety to ninety-five percent of the experiences in our lives are created by the subconscious, which is where our thoughts, memories, and habits are stored, yet the subconscious is still not prioritized much in mental health. Many of us hold subconscious beliefs that sabotage our progress, and Krishna argues that the most effective way to transform our lives is to learn tools that will help us work with our subconscious.
Krishna is trained in Psych-K (or subconscious transformation), a practice that works with neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to change. In addition to helping you identify core beliefs in the body, subconscious transformation can reveal where you are stuck and what parts of you need nurturing, detachment, and balance. This might help those who feel stuck, find themselves repeating the same patterns, need a little extra help trusting themselves, or just want to feel more joyful and present. By healing these parts of ourselves, we are able to show up authentically and fully in the world.
If you are feeling stuck or overly burdened despite knowing what you should be doing, addressing your subconscious mind could be a game changer. This episode will teach you more about this extremely effective method of healing and encourage you to think about ways in which you can further develop and grow.

If you were to eat in a way that effortlessly fit your lifestyle and your health goals, what would it look like? What are the stories you've created about what is necessary for you to be healthy and meet your fitness goals? Has it been effortless, obtainable, and supportive of your lifestyle? The purpose of this episode is to discuss these important questions we should all be thinking about when choosing our food and our habits.
In this episode, Amber discusses a client who is having trouble cooking healthy meals for herself as well as for her family. Amber encourages her client to dig deeper into why she feels she must eat so differently from her family and urges her to consider how the foods she cooks for her family can be adapted to be suitable for herself as well.
Food doesn't have any morality—there are no "good" and "bad" foods. You may be approaching your food in an unsustainable manner if you think getting healthy or losing weight means that you have to eat diet food and your family gets to eat food that is off-limits to you. Instead of focusing on foods you think you should eat, find the foods you like that work for your family and adjust them as needed to be nutritious, healthy, and enjoyable. Ideally, a healthy diet should consist of foods that we enjoy eating, which satisfy us, and aren't difficult to prepare.
You can start to build a sustainable relationship with food by asking yourself questions like: What would make my meals more satisfying? How do I want to feel throughout the day? Do my food habits reflect my values, goals, and how I want to show up in my life?
On November 15th and 16th, you'll have the opportunity to receive some FREE coaching at Amber's interactive event. You're guaranteed to gain a lot from this, so use the link below to attend this event!

With a PhD in neuroscience, Dr. Dalton uses his knowledge of metabolic health and fitness to help people achieve better habits and behaviors, ultimately resulting in a better quality of life that is simple to maintain and sustainable. Dr. Dalton asserts that sustainable change requires behavioral changes.
There is so much more to metabolism than just weight loss–it affects our overall health. Research has demonstrated that people become sick and unhealthy because of metabolic dysfunction caused by their habits and behaviors. There is no doubt that people feel better when their metabolisms are working properly. One way to achieve a healthier metabolism is by intuitive fasting.
The idea behind intuitive fasting is that it tunes up your metabolism and makes you feel more connected to your body. We often respond to habitual cravings rather than our true hunger, but Dr. Dalton says we can better access our hunger signals and get back in touch with our appetite by listening to what our bodies ask for and observing how they respond to what we put in them.
If you have found yourself yo-yo dieting and falling into the mindset that you have to fix everything at once by implementing a perfect lifestyle that never seems to work for very long, this episode will give you valuable insight into why that approach hasn't been working for you. Dr. Dalton believes we should understand why we eat, rely less on the scale for body health information, and shift our focus to behavioral changes.
