  • Go After Your Dreams DAMNIT!

What happens after you’ve spent years healing your mother wound?

At some point, you have to start living.

In this episode, I’m talking about having the audacity to go after the life you actually want, especially when you didn’t grow up with someone encouraging your dreams, believing in you or teaching you how to believe in yourself.

I share what this looks like in my own life as I return to the parts of myself that have always been there, including writing my first novel, working on a documentary and fully embracing myself as an artist.

    We talk about:

    • Becoming someone different from who your mother expected you to be
      • Why healing requires more than understanding your pain
      • Building a community that supports who you’re becoming
      • Learning to trust your dreams without needing everyone else to understand them
      • Starting before you know exactly how everything will work
      • Doing the thing because you love it, not because it has to immediately make money
      • Giving yourself permission to change, pivot and want more

If you’ve been doing this work for a while, the question becomes: What are you healing for if you’re not going to change your life?

You don’t need the entire roadmap. You need to trust yourself enough to start and keep going.

  • LIVE PODCAST RECORDING

This episode is a little different. You’re listening to audio from the live episode of the Black Mother Wound Podcast I recorded in June 2026 in front of a live audience.

And y’all came with the questions.

We talked about what healing actually looks like when your mother is still in your life, how the mother wound follows us into friendships and romantic relationships, rebuilding trust with our children and learning how to create safety within ourselves.

Because healing your mother wound is not about having a better relationship with your mother. It’s about having a better relationship with yourself.

    We talk about:
    • Setting boundaries when you’re still in contact with your mother
    • Creating safety for your inner little girl
    • Why healing can feel lonely when old relationships begin to fall away
    • People pleasing, overgiving and learning when enough is enough
    • Protecting your story when people judge your relationship with your mother
    • Repairing relationships with your children after recognizing your own patterns
    • Building confidence through evidence and experience
    • Learning how to connect without overinvesting in relationships

Healing changes how you relate to your mother, but it also changes how you relate to yourself and everybody around you.

  • The Grief of What Was Lost and the Promise of What’s to Come

Do I ever regret the time you lost because of your mother wound?

    I do.

When you start healing, you can look back and see just how much your relationship with your mother shaped your choices, relationships, confidence and the life you built. And there can be real grief in realizing what might have been different.

In this episode, I’m talking about what we do with that regret without getting stuck in resentment. Because grieving what you didn’t get doesn’t mean your life is over. Sometimes allowing yourself to finally feel that loss is exactly what makes room for joy, possibility and the parts of yourself you thought you lost.

I also share what healing has looked like for me lately, including returning to my creativity and finally writing the novel I’ve wanted to write since I was a teenager.

    We talk about:

    • Regretting choices you made from an unhealed place
    • Grieving the life you thought you could have had
    • Why resentment can keep an emotional debt open that no one is going to repay
    • Learning to give yourself what your mother couldn’t give you
    • Returning to dreams and desires you abandoned years ago
    • How healing can give you a second chance at your own life

Your joy did not die because of your relationship with your mother. Your possibilities didn’t either.

So ask yourself: What is something you wanted earlier in your life that you can reach back for now?

  • Choosing Your Inner Little Girl

In this episode of the Black Mother Wound Podcast, Jennifer answers a listener question about what happens when you ignore healing your mother wound and how to become more consistent in healing your inner little girl.

Jennifer breaks down a truth that sits at the center of this work: the mother wound is not just about the relationship you have with your mother. It is about the relationship you have with yourself. More specifically, it is about the relationship you have with your inner little girl.

This episode is a firm and loving call back to self. Jennifer explains how ignoring your healing causes you to repeat the same abandonment, rejection, dismissal, and lack of care that hurt you in the first place. When you ignore your needs, silence your body, chase approval, over give, people please, or abandon yourself to be seen as good, your inner little girl experiences that as another betrayal.

Jennifer challenges listeners to stop making healing conditional. You cannot only care for your inner little girl because you want a better relationship, a marriage, more money, peace, or a different outcome. She deserves care because she is yours. Period.

This conversation is for the Black woman who keeps showing up for everybody else but still struggles to show up for herself. It is for the woman who says she is tired of healing, but has not realized that taking a break from healing can sometimes mean leaving her inner little girl alone again. Jennifer reminds us that this work is not a trend, not a 30 day challenge, and not something you pick up only when life falls apart. It is a lifelong commitment.

    Key Takeaways

The mother wound is not only about what your mother did. It is about what you now do to yourself because of what happened.

If you are abandoning, rejecting, dismissing, or withholding care from yourself, your inner little girl is still living inside the wound.

Approval addiction will have you sacrificing your inner little girl just so other people can see you as good.

Healing cannot be conditional. Your inner little girl does not need to perform, improve, or help you get something before she deserves care.

Your body is always giving you information. The tightness, fear, anxiety, anger, resentment, and numbness are not random. They are messages.

You may have been waiting for your mother to apologize, but you also owe your inner little girl an apology.

Consistency does not mean you never mess up. It means you keep coming back, repairing, listening, and choosing her again.

  • How to Recognize and Receive Love After a Lifetime of Not Having It

How do you recognize danger when danger was normal growing up? How do you receive love when the love you knew was conditional? And how do you know when you're making a decision from healing versus guilt and people pleasing?

These questions all come back to the same place: your relationship with yourself.

In this episode, I’m talking about what it really takes to rebuild trust with yourself after the mother wound taught you to ignore your feelings, abandon your needs and trade pieces of yourself for love, connection and approval.

Because healing your mother wound isn't really about your mother. At some point, we have to deal with how we've learned to treat ourselves.

We’re also getting into something I’m realizing in my own healing right now: real healing requires infrastructure. It’s not enough to understand your trauma. You have to build a life that can actually support the woman you're becoming.

    In this episode:

    • Why safety and love can be difficult to recognize after growing up with conditional love
      • Learning what different emotions actually feel like in your body
      • Why you have to become safe and trustworthy to yourself first
      • How people pleasing can become another form of self-abandonment
      • The difference between knowing about healing and actually building your life around it
      • Why new experiences, community, support and self-soothing matter
      • Taking accountability for the ways you continue to abandon yourself
      • Building an internal structure strong enough to support who you're becoming

You can't keep asking other people to give you the safety, love and validation that you refuse to give yourself.

At some point, you have to decide: I'm going to take care of me before I sacrifice me to keep everybody else comfortable.

  • When the Inner Work Isn’t Working

What happens when you’ve done all the inner work, but your actual life still isn’t changing?

You’ve read the books. You’ve listened to the podcasts. You’ve journaled, meditated, said the affirmations and worked on your mother wound. But you’re still struggling with money, stability, your career, or simply taking care of yourself.

At some point, the inner work has to become outer work.

In this episode, I’m answering a listener question about how we take everything we’ve learned about ourselves and actually use it to change our lives.

For me, one of the biggest realizations was that I couldn’t think, study, meditate or heal my way out of being afraid. I had to start doing shit while I was still afraid.

    Apply for the job.

Go to the networking event alone.

    Ask for help.

Make the money however you need to make it.

Stop letting shame and what you think other people might think make decisions about your real life.

Because sometimes what looks like a money problem is also a safety problem, a self-trust problem and a mother wound problem.

    In this episode:
    • Why inner work without outer action keeps us stuck
    • How the mother wound can affect money and financial stability
    • Why you may struggle to see yourself beyond what your mother modeled for you
    • The connection between shame, fear and missed opportunities
    • Why exposure to new people and possibilities matters
    • Learning to take care of yourself even when it doesn’t look impressive
    • Why consistency and commitment to yourself have to become part of your healing

You do not need another book before you make a move.

At some point, you have to take everything you’ve learned about yourself and go do the fucking thing.

  • [RePlay] Stop Talking to Yourself Like That

The way you speak to yourself did not start with you.

The words spoken over you, and the ones that never came, do not simply pass through, they take root. They settle into the soil of your mind, growing into beliefs that shape how you see yourself, how you move, and what you believe you are allowed to have. Over time, those beliefs become patterns, and those patterns begin to feel like identity. What started as someone else’s voice can become the one that guides your choices, questions your instincts, and defines your worth.

Along the way, that voice can feel like the truth. A mother’s words can echo so loudly that they become the lens through which everything is filtered. Even her silence can speak, teaching you what is valuable by what was never affirmed. Without realizing it, life can begin to orbit around unspoken rules, where rest feels like something to earn, joy feels excessive, and expression feels unsafe. The result is a quiet shrinking, a life shaped more by limitation than possibility.

Change begins by listening closely to what has been running in the background. Not to silence it immediately, but to understand it. To sit with it, to trace where it came from, and to gently introduce something new. This is not about fixing what is broken, but about tending to what was planted. With new language, spoken with intention and care, new beliefs can grow, creating space for a life that feels more honest, more grounded, and more your own.

In this episode, I sit down with Britnei Nicole to explore how language shapes identity, behavior, and healing within the mother wound. We talk about how words become belief systems, how traditional Black parenting influences what is passed down, and how even silence can define self-worth. This conversation opens the door to a different way of relating to yourself, one where you begin to choose the words that will shape who you are becoming.

“You don’t have to attack your thoughts to change them; you can respond with care. There is healing power in not trying to change the feeling right away, but sitting with it.” – Britnei Nicole

  • Your New Life Will Cost You Your Old One

In this episode of the Black Mother Wound Podcast, Jennifer gets honest about what came up after her AC went out in the middle of a South Carolina summer. What started as a home ownership problem quickly became something much deeper: shame, self-blame, loneliness, and the pain of realizing how much she was never taught.

Jennifer unpacks the emotional weight of being a smart, capable, high-functioning Black woman who still feels like she is missing basic life lessons. Not because she is incapable, but because so much of her life was spent figuring things out alone, without the safety, patience, or loving guidance she needed.

This episode is about the steep learning curve of adulthood when you did not have an emotionally attuned mother. It is about how hard it can be to admit what you do not know when you were raised to believe you should already know. It is about the shame that comes up when life exposes a gap in your skill set, and the grief of not having a mother you can call who makes you feel safe while you figure it out.

Jennifer also talks about repeating patterns with her own son, learning how to be gentler with herself, asking for help, opening up to friends, and allowing herself to be a person having a human experience instead of somebody who has to get everything right to be loved.

This conversation is for the woman who is exhausted from always having to figure it out, who feels embarrassed by what she does not know, and who is learning that not knowing does not make her broken. It makes her human.

  • Who Am I Without Helping?

What happens when being helpful becomes the way you prove that you’re a good person?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and I finally had to admit something I’ve been dancing around for a long time.
    I’m tired of helping people.
Not because I don’t care about people. Not because I don’t have anything to give. And definitely not because I don’t know how to help.
I’m actually really fucking good at it.
But I’ve realized that I have spent years making myself valuable through what I can do for other people.
Teaching. Coaching. Explaining. Showing up. Making people feel seen. Giving people what I thought they needed.
And somewhere along the way, I stopped asking myself what I needed.
That is the mother wound showing up in a way I didn’t recognize before.
I thought I was being of service. I thought I was building community. I thought I was helping Black women heal.
But I was also constantly adjusting myself around other people. Thinking about what they wanted from me.
What they would think. Whether they liked what I said. Whether I was being helpful enough.
    And that shit is exhausting.
In this episode, I’m talking about what happens when being a good woman becomes more important than being a whole woman.
I’m talking about the ways Black women are taught to make themselves smaller, more useful, more agreeable and more available in order to maintain connection.
And I’m talking about what happens when you finally realize:
I don’t want to build my life around what I can do for everybody else. I want to build a life around me.
What I want. What I like. What I need. What makes me feel good. What lights me up.
And yes, I feel guilty about it.
But I’m learning that feeling guilty doesn’t automatically mean I’m doing something wrong.
Maybe this next chapter isn’t about becoming more helpful.
Maybe it’s about finally becoming more myself.
And maybe the biggest question of all: What would your life look like if you stopped organizing it around being useful to other people?

  • The Lie That Keeps You Playing Small

For so many of us, healing isn't just about setting boundaries with other people. It's about finally stopping the habit of abandoning ourselves.

In this episode, I'm talking about something I've been actively working through in real time: learning how to let myself be seen without trying to explain, justify, or soften who I am so other people will approve.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that being a "good woman," a "good daughter," or a "good person" meant editing ourselves to make other people comfortable. We called it maturity. We called it love. We called it respect. But underneath all of it was self-abandonment.

    Today we're questioning that programming.

We'll talk about why your younger self wasn't obsessed with being liked, how shame taught us to perform instead of simply exist, and why one of the biggest signs of healing is realizing that nobody has the power to punish you anymore.

If you've been waiting until you're more confident, more polished, or more perfect before showing up as yourself, this episode is your reminder that healing isn't about getting it right.

It's about trusting yourself enough to do it anyway.

    In This Episode

    • Why the need to explain yourself comes from old survival patterns
    • How people-pleasing slowly becomes self-abandonment
    • The difference between authenticity and performance
    • Why fear of being judged keeps us stuck
    • How your mother wound trained you to seek approval
    • Learning to trust your own voice instead of outside validation
    • What "doing it ugly" really means
    • Why emotional sobriety is becoming one of the most important parts of healing

The goal isn't to convince everyone to like you.

The goal is to become the kind of woman who no longer needs their permission to be herself.
