  • Simple Practices And Tips For Better Sleep

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, ButcherBox, and Mitopure.

Sleep is a keystone of health. Most people know they should get more high-quality sleep, but they don’t really know where to start. But understanding the way our brain and neurotransmitters work means we can hack our sleep to not just feel amazing but to level up our focus, skills, and knowledge. And it’s not all about what happens at night, either—getting the right exposure to light at the right times has a profound impact on our circadian rhythms and the way our bodies transition to sleep.

In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Roger Seheult, Dhru Purohit, and Dr. Andrew Huberman about why optimizing your sleep should be prioritized and how you can get better sleep.

Dr. Roger Seheult is currently an associate clinical professor at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, and an assistant clinical professor at the School of Medicine and Allied Health at Loma Linda University. Dr. Seheult is quadruple board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also the cofounder of MedCram, an online medical education company that helps healthcare professionals and laypeople understand medical topics clearly.

Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30 million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.

Dr. Andrew Huberman is a McKnight Foundation and Pew Foundation Fellow and was awarded the Cogan Award in 2017, which is given to the scientist making the largest discoveries in the study of vision. His lab’s most recent work focuses on the influence of vision and respiration on human performance and brain states such as fear and courage. Work from the Huberman Laboratory at Stanford University School of Medicine has been published in top journals including Nature, Science, and Cell and has been featured in TIME, BBC, Scientific American, Discover, and other top media outlets.

  • What's Causing Your IBS And How To Heal Your Gut

This episode is sponsored by InsideTracker and Athletic Greens.

Believe it or not, the surface area of your small intestine, which is where your food is absorbed, is the size of a tennis court. Your small intestine is also the home of your gut-immune system, which accounts for about 60 percent of your total immune system. The lining of this sophisticated system is just one cell layer away from a toxic sewer where all of the bacteria and undigested food particles live in your gut. If that lining breaks down—from stress; too many antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen; steroids; intestinal infections; a low-fiber, high-sugar diet; alcohol; and more—your immune system will be exposed to foreign particles from food, bacteria, and other microbes. This, in turn, creates havoc that can lead to an irritable bowel and other system-wide problems including allergies, arthritis, and autoimmune and mood disorders.

In today’s episode of a new series called Health Bites, I discuss how to heal irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and upregulate your gut health, which is at the forefront of Americans’ most common health complaints.

Why are we seeing more chronic disease, stress, obesity, addiction, and so many other states of illness than ever before, despite having the most advanced medical system in the world?

Because we aren’t living in a natural and normal world. We’re actually having normal responses to our abnormal circumstances, many of which create trauma that gets stored in the brain and body. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m honored to talk to my dear friend Dr. Gabor Maté about the myth of normal, and why doing the difficult work of uncovering trauma is essential for living our fullest expression of life.

A renowned speaker and bestselling author, Dr. Gabor Maté is highly sought after for his expertise on a range of topics including addiction, stress, and childhood development. Dr. Maté has written several bestselling books, including the award-winning In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction, When the Body Says No: Exploring the Stress-Disease Connection, and Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates and What You Can Do About It, and has co-authored Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. His latest book, The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness & Healing in a Toxic Culture was just released.

      • How To Know If You're Magnesium Deficient And What To Do About It

This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Athletic Greens.

Think of magnesium as the relaxation mineral. Anything that is tight, irritable, crampy, and stiff—whether it is a body part or even a mood—can be a sign of magnesium deficiency. This critical mineral is actually responsible for over 600 enzyme reactions and is found in all of your tissues—but mainly in your bones, muscles, and brain. You must have it for your cells to make energy, for many different chemical pumps to work, to stabilize membranes, and to help muscles relax. Yet, so many of us are deficient in this important mineral.

In today’s episode of a new series called Health Bites, I discuss why magnesium deficiency is a huge problem, why most of us are deficient, how to identify if you are magnesium deficient, and what to do about it.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Cozy Earth, and BiOptimizers.

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, affects 5 to 10% of women in their childbearing years. Despite the many women struggling with the difficult symptoms of PCOS, we still know little about it. Those symptoms can include irregular or missing periods, excessive hair growth or hair loss, acne, and weight gain. Sadly, the average woman with PCOS sees four doctors before receiving a diagnosis. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to Dr. Heather Huddleston to dig into the nuances and research around PCOS.

Dr. Huddleston is the founder of the UCSF Multi-disciplinary PCOS Clinic and Research Center. This clinic provides care via an integrated group of providers with expertise in reproductive endocrinology, dermatology, nutrition, and psychology. Through the associated research program, Dr. Huddleston oversees investigations aimed at advancing our understanding of how physical activity, depression, cognition, sleep, and metabolic health all contribute to the manifestations of PCOS. Dr. Huddleston is passionate about broadly improving the care of patients with PCOS and serves as a medical advisor to Allara Health, which is an all-in-one virtual care platform for people with PCOS.

          • Using Diet And Lifestyle To Reverse Symptoms Of MS

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Paleovalley, and InsideTracker.

The most profound cases of healing are in people who refuse to give up. Even if they’ve found some things that improve their condition, they continue searching for new ways to feel better and better. This is how we break down walls in medicine. The Functional Medicine methodology is the same; there is no end to searching for what is underneath the symptoms. Functional Medicine healing protocols can ultimately help change the prognosis of so many conditions, including the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis.

In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Terry Wahls and Dr. Todd LePine about using diet, meditation, and much more to reverse devastating autoimmune disease symptoms.

Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. Her secondary progressive multiple sclerosis confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years, but she restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for mitochondrial health and now pedals her bike to work each day. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine, The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and the cookbook, The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions.

Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is board certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine certified practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders.

This episode is sponsored by InsideTracker and Athletic Greens.

Glutathione is the most important molecule you need to stay healthy and prevent disease—yet you’ve probably never heard of it. It’s the secret to preventing aging, cancer, heart disease, dementia, and more, and it is necessary to treat everything from autism to Alzheimer’s disease. The good news is your body produces its own glutathione. The bad news is poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections, and radiation all deplete your glutathione levels.

In today’s episode of a new series called Health Bites, I discuss what glutathione is, why it’s important, and tips to help you optimize your glutathione levels, improve your detoxification system, and help protect yourself from chronic illness.

            • How Reprogramming Our Genes Can Extend Our Lives with George Church

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Cozy Earth, and InsideTracker.

All living things are programmed with a certain lifespan, which can be dramatically different from species to species. Humans now, in general, live twice as long as our ancestors, thanks to environmental changes and advances in medicine. But most of us spend the last years of our lives without the quality of life we really want. We’ve come to identify a slew of symptoms and chronic diseases as a natural part of aging, but do they really have to be?

Today I’m excited to talk to Dr. George Church all about the latest science on reprogramming our genes to extend our healthspan and lifespan. Dr. George Church is a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, a founding member of the Wyss Institute, and director of PersonalGenomes.org, the world’s only open-access information on human genomic, environmental, and trait data. Dr. Church is known for pioneering the fields of personal genomics and synthetic biology. He developed the first methods for the first genome sequence and his team invented CRISPR for human stem cell genome editing and other synthetic biology technologies and applications—including new ways to create organs for transplantation, gene therapies for aging reversal, and gene drives to eliminate Lyme disease and malaria. Dr. Church is the director of IARPA & NIH BRAIN Projects and the National Institutes of Health Center for Excellence in Genomic Science.  He is the author of Regenesis.
