As MSP owners and operators, our growth journey is intrinsically tied to our personal aspirations. Yet, how often do we truly reflect on this? Today, I'm going to share five key tips to help you take control of your MSP's growth and avoid becoming the bottleneck. 

1. Visualize Your Success: It all begins with a clear vision. Where do you see your MSP in three years? Is it about spending more quality time with your loved ones, achieving financial stability, or giving back to the community? Reverse engineer your vision and create a plan to get there. Without a personal vision, your MSP's growth may lack direction and purpose. 

2. Measure What Matters: Many MSP owners struggle with what metrics to track. While it's easy to get lost in the details, focusing on key performance indicators (KPIs) that truly impact your bottom line is crucial. Keep a close eye on cash flow, profitability, and marketing ROI. Remember, what gets measured gets done, and it's essential to measure what matters most for MSP growth. 

3. Decision-Making Authority: Who is calling the shots in your MSP? While input from others can be valuable, be cautious about involving too many people in decision-making. Trust your instincts and rely on qualified advisors. Your business model doesn't have to be overly complex. By streamlining decision-making, you prevent throttling your MSP's growth. 

4. Time Management: Time is your most valuable resource. Identify tasks as £10, £100, or £1000-pound activities. Delegate or eliminate low-value tasks that don't contribute to MSP growth. As the leader, focus your time on high-impact, strategic activities that drive your business forward. For instance, I've delegated email management to my skilled PA, allowing me to concentrate on tasks that truly matter. 

5. Consistent Reviews: Regular, structured meetings with your team are vital for MSP growth. Consistency is key here. Commit to the schedule you set and stick to it. Review performance, discuss strategy, and ensure everyone is aligned with your MSP's goals. Consistency builds trust and keeps your MSP on a steady growth trajectory. 

As MSP owners, we often find ourselves juggling various roles and responsibilities. But remember, your business can only grow as much as your thinking allows. Avoid overcomplicating matters and trust the growth process. Seek advice and support from within the MSP community, like the Tech Tribe or CompTIA. Collaboration and shared experiences can provide valuable insights to fuel your MSP's growth journey. 

In conclusion, your MSP's growth is a reflection of your vision, decision-making, time management, and consistency. By implementing these five tips, you can break free from throttling your MSP's potential. Start with a clear vision, measure what matters, streamline decision-making, manage your time wisely, and maintain consistent reviews with your team. Embrace the simplicity and trust in the process. 

Remember, your MSP's growth journey should align with your personal aspirations, and with the right mindset, you can achieve remarkable results.

First things first, Stephen shares all about himself and why he was put in front of the IT Experts Podcast limelight on behalf of NinjaOne. Stephen shares that he is from the MSP world himself with 14 years running an MSP in the Northeast of England. He briefly shares his journey in the MSP space. 

Stephen then talks about the transition from Ninja RMM to NinjaOne and how the whole thing came about. Steven highlights that rebranding happens especially when building and organisation and starting to change in direction. 

Then Stephen talks about the difference between Ninja RMM and NinjaOne. He says that in terms of the tool itself, they have built on a number of features where ultimately, they were just listening to the customers and what they want in the product. He also talks about the other solution stacks that they have got built into their system now. 

We then continued to talk about the main challenge, why MSPs have so many systems and I ask Stephen his understanding of why this happens. For Stephen, the biggest reason that he always sees is the typical belief, “The customer is always right.” We then talk about an MSP’s relationship with vendors and how does having multiple vendors affects their ability to scale. 

Then we tackle how can an MSP measure the effectiveness of their stack from an ROI perspective. Stephen says that it's about going down the traditional model and looking at the financial impact. At the same time, Stephen highlights that, although there isn’t a perfect way to measure it, it’s got to be the right way for your MSP. 

Stephen also talk about how long he has been with NinjaOne and some of his predictions in the help desk, solution stack, and automation space. Stephen says that the biggest one he is currently seeing is how every MSP is now asking out for some form of API/automation/integration as they want to work freely between tools. 

Wrapping up the episode, Stephen shares all about NinjaOne and what’s in it for MSPs. NinjaOne is a single-pane IT management that MSPs can use to turn IT into a source of growth and innovation. Stephen draws from his experience and challenges before being in the MSP space and how NinjaOne helped them.

This is something that EVERY MSP needs to hear! 

 So, before we head on to the 7 Power Presenting Protocols in successfully presenting to others, I let him talk about who and what he does.  

As a kickstart, David talked about the first protocol Purpose. Which I think is an essential starting point in order to build a clear call to action.  

The following protocols which are filled with stories and experiences from David and me are Planning, Preferences, Practice, and Participation.  

Before coming into the sixth and final protocol, David emphasized that it is important to ensure these first five protocols in order to secure proper execution and delivery.  

Thereafter we talked about the critical processes of Performance and Presentation.  

This may be one lengthy episode but surely, I am fascinated by how David is precise in explaining each process I can also share some experiences I had in the past years.  

There are also some tips for both beginners and professionals that will surely help in confidence building when you are to deliver and present.  

Wrapping up, David did a word trick that would resonate with Rapport – an important thing to establish that would generate connections, relationships, and thought leaders. A perfect episode for you, who wish to improve and become the best speaker you could ever be.

If there’s anyone credible about how we could use this strategy to add more value to our clients and more projects in our MSP, he is no other than a VCIO himself – Paul Croker. In letting him introduce what he’s been doing, Paul speaks of his company 18it UK which is focused on providing outsourced Virtual Chief Information Office (VCIO).  

Before getting serious about how VCIOs help in the MSP journey, I asked Paul about the difference between the VCIO and the CTO role. Straightforward in his answer, we then had an interesting conversation as I asked Paul what he thinks about this strategy on the Old Sales Funnel and what can it do more to the New Sales Funnel.  

Talking about one of my favourite rants – not talking technical matters because you are not selling to technical people, we then discussed how important having VCIO service is to understand your client and the people you deal with above anything else. As someone working with a team, I also asked Paul how having this strategy could work in such dynamics and how could it work in terms of chargeable matters. 

Going halfway, I think it is also important to talk about how would an MSP be in having this kind of service and its processes. Paul emphasized the importance of right alignment. I also asked him which this service in the MSP could best work for – in planning or delivery.  

The conversation gets even more interesting as Paul talked about who really is and what really is a VCIO, in an MSP. He also revealed their own ‘listening policy’ that helped them in their business. This is a great reminder of how it helps us realign into getting our MSP’s flow and its roadmaps looking forward. Of course, we never would want our conversation to finish without talking about how different people are, with different cultures and personalities.  

Wrapping up this Episode, Paul gave some golden tips on what your MSP should need to know and get to be doing which are much helpful and practical.

Early on Monday 8th August 2022, we had our very first LIVE podcast session, and we streamed it LIVE on our Facebook Group, there is no other thought than sharing it with you. This one’s for those who want to listen again and for those who missed this special episode. 

As a kickstart, I personally shared my corporate experience as a team member for six months. A memorable one, and mind you, I was just only 25 at the time. It is where I learned many things that started my career in Leadership. 

Then, Stuart gave his insight about the importance of understanding how to approach growth and change in your MSP. As it is not all about revolution but evolution, the two tracks you should elevate in your business.  

Here, we talked about our core philosophy and the very important 3 leadership pinnacles – Personal, Strategic, and Team Leadership

Stuart emphasised the thing to let go in order to succeed in the journey.  

In one of the highlights of this episode, we introduced our Scale with Confidence model (you can learn more about this if you join the group). Together with this, I emphasized how learning new things could really help develop ourselves as leaders. Stuart then talked about the fear zone and the importance of why and when you should do things within these zones.  

We then discussed what good leadership looks like and how it could help you align yourself with your plan  

By the end of the episode, we answered two questions that are about how to find and make time amidst all the busy stuff going on in your life and the other on how to get a team into taking ownership.

Down to the third best-picked, I am with an amazing friend and MSP Marketing Expert, Paul Green. In his seven-year MSP journey, he helped us understand MSP marketing trends in 2022. Episode 78 allows us to realize the importance of maximizing capacity, center customers, and how difficult it is to get MSPs into marketing.

With everything that’s going on, this Episode will remind and get us through what it takes to grow and improve your MSP. As a kickstart, I moderated the conversation by letting Stuart express the importance of why they really need to be curious about what the journey looks like.  

Moving forward, the Scale with Confidence formula is unfolded. Particularly, in the Three Pillars or phases, one must be patient and good enough to work with.  

Firstly, we had a comprehensive discussion on what the first phase – Survive Phase is all about and what one should focus to do in that phase. Stuart explained what this phase is defined, how it is driven, and how should an individual think about showing up.  

Since then, we have been banking on the value of mindset, so I asked Stuart what then a healthy mindset looks like. This part is something you should never miss out on since he revealed two important realities that you are about to face and what you should do to prevent this or get out of this when you are already in.  

In the second phase which is the Drive Phase, I and Stuart agreed on the significant impact of how the structure side matters. Here, are areas to step into or away from being discussed, and what really is the MSP Journey all about.  

Before going deep into the last phase, we never forget to talk about a special ingredient – Leadership. The Thrive and Arrive Phase on the last pillar is something you should also greatly look into. Stuart had a thorough discussion on real tipping points and how leadership affects this phase. Its processes, skills, and ways to enter this phase.  

Wrapping up this Episode, we laid our inputs on how we really apply this model to the MSP journey as a process and how you can easily reach out through our channels.

I’m a massive fan of events and it is with great pleasure that Pete and I had a conversation on how it’s done, what are the necessary things to consider, and also where do I start

Definitely, no one could ever lead us through this conversation but Peter Davies. He is the head of managed services sales from Angel Business Communications. A long-time traditional publisher who has been in IT services for 25 years and holding IT events for 23 years. Pete is best known for running and supporting big events, like the Managed Services Summit, which makes this episode even more exciting.

Pete and I started by really getting into knowing what event strategies should an MSP Marketing team consider. Knowing why it is important to always ensure correct planning to ensure its success and why we need to use events in the first place

We also shared our views on the importance of building great relationships with peers, vendors, and suppliers in every matter.

Pete agreed with me, that sometimes hosting events can be daunting. Pete then emphasised the important things to establish first, before selling a product.  

The C-word to make in order to find better opportunities and have better outcomes. 

As we talked about things to do, we also shared an important list of NOT to do’s, especially if you are still starting to find meaningful engagements or establish something in an event.

Pete then wrapped up by sharing the key things to look for to make sure the events are really valuable for everybody, whether for the vendor or seller – making sure inclusivity.

It has been a pleasure talking with Phylip in Episode 094, about his life-changing event as he battled Tuberculosis. This time, I couldn’t think of anyone that I can do it with, except Phylip Morgan himself. This is definitely a perfect balance of laughter and tears, as we just get along without any piece of script or pre-prepared questions.

Initially, Phylip enabled me to start with and talk about that one life-changing event that happened between me and my wife, Wendy. This is something I never talked about in public but has an integral part in me, especially in how I’ve dealt with these challenges with our son for the past 22 years. It was then I talked about what happened to us that changed our lives forever.

For Phylip, the kickstart is a real up-to-date talk about a part of my life. 

As we go along, Phylip emphasized the unavoidable highs and lows in life, and he gave me an avenue to express how me and my wife reacted and faced the diagnosis of our son Daniel. With that, firstly I was able to recall two unforgettable moments of how Epilepsy happens so randomly.  Then I talked about how we came about with the best decision, that impacted Daniel’s growth and also us. A tipping point, in the word – acceptance.  

Phylip then opened a bit about how he handled and went through his father’s health condition, which led me to share how me and my wife, as a couple, continued with this lifetime situation we are in. It was a total recall of the struggles, rejections, and differences we faced together prioritising Daniel’s needs, and how I fought for them. Also, the part where I talked about what gives me more drive to continue despite someone or something stopping me, even in the world of my business or with the work we do with the MSPs.

As we talked about how we are being motivated, Phylip allowed me to get back into some moments where I was still in the corporate world and the encounter I had with a random man. A reminder of how me and Stuart managed and get along with our business and the different clients we face every day.

Lastly, Phylip asked me to give some advice to the people who experienced the same personal and business struggles I have.

As we wrap the episode, Phylip commended how everyone should relate to starting really with a great team, as he talks about one of the books that got him hooked. From there, we then had the time to talk about what we see in the five years ahead of us, as a father and someone hustling in the business we have.

The Channel Partners Europe was a two-day event that happened on the 14th and 15th of June 2022. As the tech channel is at a turning point now where it’s already embracing a post-pandemic world, this event by the Channel Partners Events, showcased innovation, drove digital transformation, and provided all the channel insights and education an IT & MSP owner needs all under one roof.

It was a great event where more than 500 MSPs, resellers, and vendors networked and discussed business best practices, pivotal issues, and market opportunities. It was also jam-packed with presentations and speeches from 50+ channel leaders and experts in the IT & MSP space. 

In summary, the golden keys to building great teams are: 

1. Shared Company Vision, Mission, and Values
2. Business Wide KPIs and Connected Team Targets
3. Team Self-Awareness – Knowing Each Other
4. Individual Appraisals, Target Setting, and Accountability

I discussed and explained them one by one, the critical key points they come with, and why they are the golden keys to unlocking the potential and performance of your people without spending a penny. 

I also briefly talked about why leadership is important for an MSP owner to grow and scale their business confidently, the Shadow of the Leader, and how a DISC profile can help you be a great and confident MSP business leader.
