  • Ep130 Dr. Kevin Pugh on Transformative Experiences in Education
Dr. Kevin Pugh joins Tony to talk about Transformative Experiences in education. Dr. Pugh, a high school friend of Tony's, is one of the pioneers in the field of Transformative Experience Theory, which is a belief that “life is about having rich experiences and the things we learn in school should enrich and expand our everyday experience outside of school.” The Transformative Experience Theory focuses on how in-school learning can enrich out-of-school experience by expanding perception, contributing meaning and value to future experiences, and  how learning should be transforming our relationship with the world. It combines ideas from John Dewey’s theory of aesthetics and his philosophy of education. Transformative experiences occur when students take ideas outside the classroom and use them to see and experience the world in exciting new ways. Dr. Pug is a professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado. Kevin’s book Computers, Cockroaches, and Ecosystems: Understanding Learning Through Metaphor, can be purchased here https://amzn.to/2qYEkbp (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=RgWo2vy11HXOjWdj-6deivRdAAp8MTU1ODU3OTg1MEAxNTU4NDkzNDUw&event=video_description&v=s4vcrSDwwyA&q=https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F2qYEkbp) Kevin’s blog can be found at https://learningandexperienceblog.wo (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=RgWo2vy11HXOjWdj-6deivRdAAp8MTU1ODU3OTg1MEAxNTU4NDkzNDUw&event=video_description&v=s4vcrSDwwyA&q=https%3A%2F%2Flearningandexperienceblog.wordpress.com%2F)rdpress.com

  • Ep129 Do I NEED My Partner For My Own Happiness? Exploring Dr. Sue Johnson's Love Sense
One of the popular messages shared by both therapists and media alike is that we are supposed to be in complete control of our own emotions before, or even IF we then turn to others and that it is necessary to love yourself first and only THEN will someone else be able to love you. But according to Dr. Sue Johnson, founder of the highly successful evidence-based couples therapy model, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), our new knowledge “stands that message on its head.” Dr. Johnson, in her latest book, Love Sense, The Revolutionary New Science of Romantic Relationships, says that “we are designed to deal with emotion in concert with another person, not by ourselves.” Tony breaks down attachment issues at their very beginning, when we’re born, and then builds on why it is so important to have a secure attachment as a base to operate from in order to be more successful in navigating the complex world of human relationships. “We have cracked the code of love,” says Dr. Johnson.

  • Ep128 Dr. Adam Harcourt on Brain Fog, Migraines, TBI, Concussions and Simple Brain Exercises
Why are some days just harder to get started than others? Do you sometimes feel like your brain is enveloped in a fog? Have you ever wondered where your migraines come from? Dr. Harcourt and Tony cover migraines, concussions, as well as brain fog, headaches, they discuss diet (what role does caffeine play in brain health?) and Dr. Harcourt provides listeners with simple eye exercises and brain games that you can play to help keep your brain feeling alive and engaged. • Ep127 Tony Reacts to the article “Why Do People Lie to Their Therapists” plus Habit Change, Narcissism, Gaslighting and More!
If you have access to anyone under the age of 25 in your life, ask them about “reaction videos” and then watch their own reactions! Whether you love watching old people react to rap videos, or your favorite actor or musician react to people watching them perform, sites like YouTube are full of these reaction videos. Tony first answers a question about why it takes longer than 21 days to truly create a new habit (and where that myth comes from), and then he dives into the research behind reaction videos before creating his own reaction video! Tony reacts to a popular article making the rounds in the therapeutic community titled “Why Do People Lie to their Therapists?” by Sue Kolod, PhD.
You can see the video on the Virtual Couch YouTube channel, or there will be links from the Virtual Couch or the Tony Overbay Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Facebook pages, or by visiting tonyoverbay.com. • Ep126 Recognizing the Raw Spots in Relationships (EFT)
Have you ever felt like everything was going right in your relationship? You are laughing, communicating well, when all of a sudden the mood has dramatically shifted? What just happened? Chances are you’ve rubbed up against a “raw spot” in the relationship. According to Dr. Sue Johnson, founder of Emotionally Focused Therapy, almost all of us have at least one hypersensitivity, or “raw spot” that, when rubbed in a relationship, can cause immediate feelings of emotional detachment, hurt, and abandonment. Learn how to spot the raw spots in your relationships, and, more importantly, how to heal them. Tony refers to Helena Madsen’s article “Living with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” in the podcast. https://www.goodtherapy.org/blog/chronic-illness-hypersensitivity-relationships/
