“I know how you feel.” Do you really? While this phrase is well-meaning, can one truly understand what another is going through when each one of us is an entirely unique individual with only our own setup situations and circumstances that we bring to the table? After all, you are the only person in the history of the earth who has gone through exactly the situations that you have gone through based on the things that you have uniquely seen, done, experienced and felt up to this point in your life. Be it nature or nurture, DNA, birth order, rejection and abandonment issues, the set of friends that you have and all that they have gone through that have caused them to react in certain ways toward you. So is it even possible to truly have complete empathy for another? And, perhaps more importantly, how do you exercise your empathy skills? How do you develop your empathy muscles? Learn actual examples of empathetic phrases and more on today’s episode of The Virtual Couch. Laura Click’s Medium Article 31 Empathetic Statements for When You Don’t Know What to Say is quoted throughout this podcast. Everyone has mood swings, sometimes throughout a week, or a day, even within the span of a minute we can go from feeling like everything is right in the world, to wanting to crawl back in bed for the day. But does having regular ups and downs mean that you’re bipolar? Bipolar disorder is one of the most misunderstood diagnosis in the mental health field and the term “I’m bipolar” or “she’s being bipolar” is thrown around too casually, especially for people who are truly suffering with the disorder. On today’s episode, you’ll learn everything that you ever wanted to know, including several things that you didn’t even know you wanted to know, about bipolar disorder including what “mania” really looks like, are medications effective, and what is the difference between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2? Most of the research on today’s episode can be found at https://psychcentral.com/bipolar/ with a special thanks to Dr. John Grohol for his wealth of helpful information on the subject.

My interview on Julie Lee's I See You Podcast. From Julie's show notes: "Joined by The Virtual Couch's Tony Overbay, today we are talking all about marriage! 'Seeing' your spouse with compassion and connection are key in saving a marriage. Tony, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist is here to teach us about EFT, gas-lighting, and creating safe relationships." Julie was a guest on The Virtual Couch episode 123 where she talks about her own journey with battling anxiety and depression. Julie and I switched interviewer/interviewee roles a couple of weeks later and she asked me a lot of questions about what to do when your marriage is hurting? I highly recommend this episode for anyone who may be struggling in their marriages, or for anyone married, or in a relationship in general as we talk about a lot of concepts and tools that I believe would be helpful for anyone to know to have a healthier connection, and more quality communication, with a partner.
