Ep.K170: About New York - Dumplings tempt New Yorkers with pizza, peanut butter flavors - and no human contact

New Yorkers can now get their dumpling fix from an automat with no human contact, and the adventurous can order flavors ranging from pepperoni pizza to peanut butter and jelly.

While the Brooklyn Dumpling Shop in the city’s East Village offers traditional pork and chicken bite-sized treats, chicken parm or Philly cheesesteak are also on the menu.

Spurred by the pandemic and technology advances, the Brooklyn Dumpling Shop is delivering food via automat 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"Embrace technology, because technology is something that has to be embraced by hospitality(business)to thrive," said the shop’s owner Stratis Morfogen.

New York lawmakers pass bill allowing gender-neutral "X" option in govt documents

The New York state assembly has passed a bill that would allow people who do not identify as either male or female to use "X" as a marker to designate their sex on drivers’ licenses.

The new marker would help transgender, nonbinary and intersex individuals’ identity be recognized in government documents, according to a statement from Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assembly member Daniel O’Donnell.

"The provisions in this bill will make life safer, reduce the stigma and affirm the identities for so many of our friends and neighbors," O’Donnell said in the statement.

Ep.K169: About Thailand - Parched fields force Thailand to look beyond rice

Thailand has long served as one of the globe’s main rice bowls, but chronic water shortages are pushing the country to move away from a grain that dominates its fields and has defined a way of life for generations.

Laddawan has spent the past forty years coaxing rice from her plot in central Thailand, but she is tired of watching her farmland squeezed dry by increasingly severe droughts.

"I plan to replace some rice paddies with limes," she told AFP after attending a government-run workshop urging farmers to diversify their crops.

At a workshop held in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok, Laddawan was sold the seeds fruit trees.

These alternatives will drastically reduce water consumption but also break the monoculture that has deteriorated Thai soil for decades.

"We have no choice, we need to adapt," Laddawan said, explaining that she used to plant three rice crops annually, but next year will only have enough water for one.

Thai hotel brews up coffee from elephant dung

For those who like their coffee with a strong nose Thailand could be the ideal destination, after a blend made from elephant dung was put on sale by an upmarket hotel chain.

The Black Ivory blend, made from coffee beans digested and excreted by Thai elephants, is billed as producing a particularly smooth cup.

But it is not cheap, with Anantara Hotels saying the "naturally refined" coffee costs a staggering $1,100 per kilogram -- making it one of the most expensive blends in the world.

"Research indicates that during digestion, the enzymes of the elephant break down coffee protein," the Thai-based hotel group said in a statement.

Ep.K168: Lithuania declares emergency over undocumented migrants from Belarus

Lithuania declared an emergency after Belarus sent a flood of illegal migrants over the two countries’ border in protest at European Union sanctions against President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.

The tensions are part of a standoff between Brussels and Minsk that escalated in May when the former Soviet republic forced a Ryanair jet to land there so the authorities could arrest an opposition journalist on board. The two sides were already at odds over Lukashenko’s victory in last year’s presidential election, which was widely deemed fraudulent and which triggered huge protests against his 27-year rule.

EU penalties over the vote — and the crackdown on demonstrators that ensued — were criticized as toothless, but the plane incident sparked measures targeting Belarus’ aviation sector and, more recently, its key industries. The tensions have left Lukashenko reliant on Russia’s Vladimir Putin for support.

Lukashenko threatened in a speech in May to send drugs and illegal migrants into the EU unchecked, with Lithuania a prime target as it has become a temporary home for the president’s political rivals. The number of undocumented immigrants — mostly from Iraq — crossing from Belarus jumped to 822 through July 2 this year from 81 in the whole of 2020.

A still image obtained by Reuters shows a flight path of Ryanair FR4978 on May 23 on its way from Athens, Greece to Lithuanian capital Vilnius and diverted to Minsk, Belarus when flying over the country. Citing a “bomb threat,” Belarusian flight controllers ordered the jet to land in Minsk, where authorities arrested Roman Protasevich, a dissident journalist who was on board. Sharing a 679-kilometer border, the Lithuania-Belarus tensions reflect the struggles between EU and Russia — the great powers behind them.

Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/07/12/2003760685

Ep.K167: Wimbledon ditches traditional gender distinction over players’ towels

Wimbledon will no longer provide different colored towels to men and women players after officials decided to scrap one of the last bastions of genderism.

Traditionally men were given two “championship” green and purple towels, while women received two “seasonal” ones, which in 2019 were pink and turquoise. But this year, for the first time, players are receiving one of each when they step on court.

A Wimbledon source said that this was one of the last male/female distinctions to go, having committed to equal pay in 2007 and equal tweets about male and female players a few years ago, and said the move was down to “progress” and a sense that the players no longer had a preference for either color.

However, they confirmed there were no plans to make a new cup for the women and a new plate for the men when it comes to handing out the singles trophies.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon have revealed that they expect to run out of their popular 34 pound towels by the middle of this week after an unexpected run on them during the opening two days of the tournament.

In 2019 Wimbledon sold 27,419 Championships’ towels across the fortnight but had ordered a “conservative” volume — believed to be closer to 15,000 — this time round.

That was largely due to the uncertainty surrounding the number of fans that would be allowed into Wimbledon. However, officials have been surprised by how many supporters have wanted a memento of their visit after the tournament was canceled last year.

Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/07/05/2003760289

Ep.K166: Housebound flower fanciers boost sales of potted plants

With so many people staying at home to beat the COVID-19 outbreak, dallying with plants and flowers has become the latest trend. Potted plants like Swiss cheese plants, succulents and yew plum pines are all very popular and are becoming a new favorite for people to spend time on at home, and they are selling briskly both online and in physical stores.

The level 3 epidemic prevention measures are causing people to go out less than usual, so many of us have no choice but to stay at home watching TV and following drama series. Potted plants have also become a fashionable trend that is boosting sales of all kinds of plants. Home deliveries are doing especially well, with business on the up and up.

A Pingtung County gardening business owner surnamed Liu says that in the past plant fanciers were mostly those who like to stay at home or are getting on in years, but recently, with the rise of the Internet, potted plants can also be delivered to your doorstep. With the serious outbreak preventing people from going out, some young people have also started mucking around with plants. Succulents, for example, are mostly grown in small pots, are quite cheap and do not require much care. One kind of houseplant that is currently popular is Swiss cheese plants. They are easy to care for, look pretty and are not particularly expensive, so they are very popular with consumers. Sales of Swiss cheese plants for home growing have grown by about three to four times since the current disease-control measure were imposed. As for yew plum pines, they are relatively expensive and a bit tricky for first-time growers, so you need to know a thing or two about plants to make them grow well and look beautiful. The stay-at-home economy during this epidemic-control period is as hard to predict as the outbreak itself.

Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/06/29/2003759957

All about Mexico

Hi there! Let's get started!

Topic: Oldest and largest ancient Maya structure found in Mexico

Scientists using an aerial remote-sensing method have discovered the largest and oldest-known structure built by the ancient Maya civilization — a colossal rectangular elevated platform built between 1,000 and 800 BC in Mexico’s Tabasco state.

The structure, unlike the soaring Maya pyramids at cities like Tikal in Guatemala and Palenque in Mexico erected some 1,500 years later, was not built of stone but rather of clay and earth, and likely was used for mass rituals, researchers said on June 3.

Located at a site called Aguada Fenix near the Guatemalan border, the structure measured nearly 400m wide and 1,400m long and stood 10m to 15m high. In total volume, it exceeded ancient Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza built 1,500 years earlier.

There were no signs of sculptures depicting high-status individuals, suggesting Maya culture at this early stage was more communal and only later developed social inequality and a hierarchical society led by royalty, the researchers said. “Because it is so large horizontally, if you walk on it, it just looks like natural landscape,” said University of Arizona archaeologist Takeshi Inomata, who led the research published in the journal Nature. “But its form comes out nicely in lidar.”

Lidar, short for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote-sensing technique that employs a pulsed laser and other data obtained flying over a site to generate three-dimensional information about the shape of surface characteristics. Nine large causeways and a series of reservoirs were linked to the structure. Some parts of the rural Aguada Fenix site today are covered with cattle ranches. Other parts are wooded.

“It is probable that many people from surrounding areas gathered for special occasions, possibly tied to calendrical cycles,” Inomata said. “The rituals probably involved processions along the causeways and within the rectangular plaza. The people also deposited symbolic objects such as jade axes in the center of the plateau.”

Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/06/21/2003738560

Made of natural yogurt and lactobacilli bacteria, it can help digestion while normal ice cream can cause pain and diarrhea in dogs, according to shop owner Mauricio Montoya, who said the food is also safe for humans.

Topic: Near Mexico City, Cable Car Lets Commuters Glide Over Traffic

Coasting above Mexico City’s infernal congestion is normally a prerogative of the well-heeled, who take helicopters or pay to use the upper deck of two-tier highways to avoid the chaos below. In October, however, thousands of residents of this ragged industrial suburb began getting to work or school in brightly colored pods that glide along the city’s first commuter cable-car route.

The Mexicable, a seven-stop line that runs just over three miles through a furrow of poor hillside neighborhoods, is part of a growing constellation of cable cars around Latin America that links marginalized communities to their cities’ metropolitan hearts. In Ecatepec, the largest and most dangerous municipality in the 21 million-strong expanse of greater Mexico City, the Mexicable has brought new visitors, shorter commutes, a burst of street art and a new sense of inclusion in city life, residents said.

“It’s great,” said Marco Antonio Gonzalez, who used to spend an hour in a cramped bus to get from his home in San Andres de la Canada, the Mexicable’s final stop, to his job at a warehouse in the center of Ecatepec. He now has a smooth, 17-minute cable ride over dun-colored rooftops, half-bald soccer pitches and narrow streets strung with glittery bunting. The new transport system has made him proud. “People never build something as impressive as this in a neighborhood like ours,” he said.

Ecatepec stretches north from the tip of the capital’s subway network into steep hills where square cinder-block houses are stacked like Lego pieces. Many who use the cable car also catch a bus and then a subway to reach jobs — at restaurants, homes, offices or construction sites — in more affluent parts of town.Nancy Montoya, a housekeeper who lives in Esperanza, near the sixth Mexicable stop, said she saved about two hours per day using the new system — time she spends doing homework with her children or buying groceries.Over the past 12 years, gondola systems have been built in cities that include Cali and Medellin in Colombia; Caracas, Venezuela; La Paz, Bolivia; and Rio de Janeiro. There are plans to build systems in half a dozen other Latin American cities, according to the Gondola Project, which tracks cable car programs worldwide.

Source article: https://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/POH0067/309111/web/

Ep.K165: About COVID - COVID ’vaccination persuasion’ teams reap rewards in Turkey

A coronavirus "vaccination persuasion" initiative is gearing up to be rolled out across Turkey after proving a resounding success in a district in the country’s south-east.

Since February, doctors and healthcare workers in the mainly Kurdish city of Adıyaman have been calling people in age groups already eligible for the vaccine to ask why they have not come to clinics for appointments.

Then, equipped with cooler boxes full of vaccine vials, they fan out across the rural area to visit patients who are still reluctant.

It is working, boosting the vaccine take-up rate among the 250,000 strong population scattered across the province’s central district by nearly 30%.

Vax and scratch: NY offers $5M lottery for newly vaccinated

Anyone who gets vaccinated at select state-run vaccination sites in New York next week will receive a lottery scratch ticket with prizes potentially worth millions, as Gov. Andrew Cuomo tries to boost slowing vaccination rates.

The pilot program will offer prizes from $20 up to $5 million and run from Monday, May 24 to Friday, May 28 at 10 state-run sites.

The governor said there’s a one in nine chance of winning a scratch ticket prize in New York, which is joining other states, including Ohio, with similar lottery incentives. Only residents 18 and older are eligible.

New York also plans to set up pop-up vaccination sites at seven airports across the state for U.S. residents, including airport workers.

Ep.K164 : EU court says YouTube may be liable for copyright breaches

The EU’s top court on Tuesday last week said online platforms like YouTube can in some circumstances be held responsible for copyrighted material illegally uploaded by users.

The preliminary ruling will likely be welcomed by German music producer Frank Peterson who has been locked in a long-running legal battle with YouTube over unauthorized uploads featuring British artist Sarah Brightman.

The Court of Justice of the European Union found that generally speaking, YouTube and the likes are not responsible for users posting protected content without permission.

“Operators of online platforms do not, in principle, themselves make a communication to the public of copyright-protected content illegally posted online by users of those platforms,” judges said.

But the situation changes once operators of such sites are made aware of copyright breaches and fail to act “expeditiously” to remove or block the content and ensure that the infringements do not recur, they said.

Operators can also be liable for copyright violations if they refrain from putting in place technological tools to “credibly and effectively” fight against illegal uploads.

In a response to Tuesday’s ruling, YouTube said it “supports rights holders being paid their fair share.”

“That’s why we’ve invested in state of the art copyright tools which have created an entirely new revenue stream for the industry,” it said in a statement.

Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/06/28/2003759901
