As Sheryl Sandberg departs Meta many are re-examining the impact of her bestselling book Leaning In and how it fits into today's workplace. Jess and Jess sit down for a captivating conversation with author and speaker, Melanie Ho about her book and the  concept of “leaning in” and the challenges that women face in the workplace. “Leaning in and acting more like men” ignores the stereotypical feminine traits needed for modern leadership, and leaves the workplace vulnerable overall, and shortchanges women from utilizing their strengths as they are often undervalued.
 
Jess and Jess talk with Melanie about how she tells the story of Debra, a pioneering CEO in her early sixties who is much beloved by her team at her growing start-up. But sales are declining, and her strongest women leaders are departing one after the other. It isn’t until she enlists the “reverse mentorship” of the much younger Cassandra that Debra begins to understand the challenges the next generation of women leaders face and the impact on the bottom line. 

 BEYOND LEANING IN is a different kind of book—while it is based on research, it is told as a novel and designed to spark discussion which is exactly what happens on this episode.

What does it really mean to belong? And why is it one of the most challenging topics of discussion and feeling to embody? In this episode, Jess and Jess sit down with Professor Geoffrey Cohen, and author of Belonging, for a raw conversation about their own experiences that have informed their understanding and shaped their expectations of belonging. 
Professor Cohen brings research and science to the conversation, and helps The Two Jess(es) understand that by putting themselves out their with the intention of getting to know others in order to help them belong, we can all make the world a better place. But beyond that, he provides a very human approach to not only his work, but this conversation- and gives really practical advice on how to help ourselves, and others in the neverending quest of feeling like we belong.

Happy New Year! And in true WeSTAT fashion, Jess and Jess have a REAL REAL REAL conversation about mental health- in particular, Jess K's. Jess K talks candidly in this episode, about her struggles with anxiety and depression, and her recent decision to use medication to help her manage it.
Jess B has a lot of questions for Jess K around the stigma of taking medication and tries to work out (out loud) why people have such a hard time with the idea of taking medications to support their mental health- why wouldn't we want to ease our suffering?
Jess K talks openly about how much medication has helped and IS helping her right now, and meanwhile she understands the hesitancy and resistance many people have to going down that road.
An honest conversation about experiences past, present and future mental health, wellbutrin, orgasms and so many other things- if you are a woman, in particular, struggling with your mental health and the decision to take medication, this might be a good episode to listen to.

We pick up where we left off...crunchy carrots and all.  Our WeSTAT salon guests really dig into what triggers them, some can't go near zero proof and some consider it a saving grace in social settings. From the weirdness of going into a liquor store and what our children see when we pour that nightcap, to the marketing that goes into how grocery stores are laid out to make consumers feel really alright about all those bottles of wine they are buying (and drinking!) All of these women have opinions around the efficacy of AA, anonymity , and the power of sharing our stories.

Dr. Kathy Zhang is a hospice and palliative medicine physician and a podcast host who focuses on having the conversations most of us are afraid to have until it's too late: what kind of life do we want to live and when it draws to an end, how can we leave with as little regret as possible? Any other middle aged women out there suffering from unexplained pain in their shoulder? Dr. Sameer Nagda has some answers for you. It very well could be frozen shoulder- a condition that can be debilitating, and is misunderstood- and really has no origin or rhyme or reason as to why it happened in the first place.  Working off of Jess B's struggle with this condition, and her consultation with Dr. Nagda a few months ago, he says it all racks up to bad luck. However, there are some contributing factors, like (ahem) being a woman in her 40's, with thyroid imbalance, or someone who might be facing pre-diabetic status.

Dr. Nagda is a shoulder and sports medicine specialist at the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic in Northern VA. He is a team doctor for the US Womens National Soccer Team and is the chief of shoulder and elbow surgery for the Inova Health System. He is also an assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He is an active member of the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and is the recipient of the Neer Award, the highest research award given in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery.
