Silvana Espinoza Lay is a psychotherapist, consultant, and embodied liberation educator in her own journey of decolonizing her practice and herself. She supports therapists to help them decolonize their practices and to question and unlearn the ways they provide therapy to embody anti-oppressive and liberation practices. For the last 13 years, she has compassionately supported therapy seekers of different underserved and unseen identities to find a home, feel rooted, affirm their identities, and reclaim the spaces they deserve. She supervises and consults with other clinicians so that they can offer this decolonized and liberatory approach to their own clients.
In this episode, we learn what it means to decolonize one’s therapy practice and how to recognize oppressive systems in mental health that impact clients and therapists. We explore practical examples of how to decolonize our personal and professional selves. Most of all, Silvana connects this work to be a heart-centered therapist, and she shares how it can really help us prevent burnout, foster self-care and experience a greater connection with others. This thought-provoking episode is sure to broaden and challenge your perspective about your work and identity as a therapist!
