We're revisiting a favorite conversation this week: our September 2023 sit-down with Dr. Kelly Stankiewicz, one of our go-to dermatologists. Dr. Kelly specializes in laser skin treatments that combat the effects of aging and can even create a youthful glow, if that's your jam. We also break down the four core pillars of a sound skincare routine: cleanse, exfoliate, nourish, and protect. And I asked Dr. Kelly for context around Jimmy Buffett's death and the skin cancer he battled, along with what we can all do to protect ourselves. Join Us at the 2026 Super Age Games! The type that Jimmy Buffett had is very, very rare. So all of my patients who've had multiple basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, which don't typically metastasize, are, you know, kind of up in arms because they don't really understand the difference.” “When you're doing fractional resurfacing, you're decreasing your risk for skin cancer probably (or at least according to this one study) by about two times or maybe a little bit more.” Click Here for the full interview transcript. Amy Odell, the journalist behind the biographies Anna, and the newly released Gwyneth, joins the show to trace how a $6.8 trillion wellness industry has learned to monetize our fear of aging. She explains why Gwyneth Paltrow's most outrageous claims may not be cynical marketing at all, connecting research on conspiracy belief and narcissistic traits to how someone builds and defends a brand. Later, The conversation turns to plastic surgery's shift from private secret to public status symbol. A facelift can change a face without changing how old people perceive it. Odell and host David Stewart also dig into the harder distinction beneath all of it: aging as a matter of physical capacity versus a matter of appearance, and why culture keeps confusing the two. It's bigger than big ag. It's bigger than big pharma." "I do think that [Gwyneth] believes the things that she promotes, even if they seem crazy to us... there's some research that people who believe conspiracy theories have traits of narcissism." "I think we live in an ageist society... there's so much money made in selling people this idea of eternal youth." Longer life is changing what people over 50 expect from medicine, themselves, and the decades ahead. In this encore episode, Dr. Michael Roizen argues that aging is increasingly shaped by informed choices, while the current culture surrounding longevity struggles to separate useful evidence from expensive fads. Roizen examines the science behind epigenetic switches, protein cycling, metformin, stem cells, cardiovascular risk, and balance. The conversation offers a practical framework for evaluating new claims, protecting physical and cognitive function, and asking better questions before adopting a new treatment or supplement. Key Moments “You’re a better genetic engineer for you than anyone else who went to Caltech or MIT.” "Stressing the muscle not only repairs the muscle, but it turns on a gene that produces a small protein, which gets to the brain and makes the brain bigger. That’s why physical activity, we think, is so good for memory." "Can we make a hundred year old person a 40 year old person? In other words, can we extend the period of life between when you’re most productive, your 40s to 60s, to being between 40 and 90? And that’s where a lot of the aging mechanism research is going." After twenty five years as a traditional orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Elizabeth Yurth walked away from a specialty she says patches the body instead of heals it. This was a shift that eventually led her to found the Boulder Longevity Institute. In this conversation, she explains why a common knee surgery called arthroscopic debridement has been abandoned in most countries, and why cheap, decades-old lab values like creatinine and ALT are routinely misread by doctors who are misinformed on these measures. She also makes the case for treating peptides the same way we treat hormones: as naturally occurring compounds the body simply stops producing with age, not a bodybuilding shortcut or a biohacking fad. Dr. Yurth leaves listeners with a clearer, more skeptical eye for what is being marketed to them, and a working definition of healthy aging that shifts the focus from simply a lab report. "They actually found that 80% of people worsened after this surgery, not just didn't get better." "I don't need an $800 immune test to tell me. I can look at your neutrophil [to] lymphocyte ratio." We're bringing back our May 2025 conversation with Denise Kirtley, the founder of Rebellion Body. As we look back on this message, Kirtley is preparing to head to the Super Age Games with the event's largest team yet, more than 50 women strong. Kirtley built her coaching business on the idea that midlife is not a decline to manage, but a version of life women get to design on purpose. In this conversation, she explains why belief, not willpower, is usually the first thing that has to change before a body does. She also gets into the backlash she receives for posting bikini photos in her fifties, her wariness about AI-generated bodies flooding social media, and why she thinks the phrase "50 is the new 30" gets the whole conversation backward. Listeners will come away with an answer to the question that stalls most people before they ever begin: what do you do on the days you don't feel motivated at all? "I think people think motivation is like this mythical thing that all of a sudden the clouds open and you get the sign from the heavens that ‘Now is the time.’ It doesn't work that way. You just do it." "We cannot worry about the things that naturally happen as we age."
