The heart of Plowboys BBQ is competition-style barbecue. It began in 2001 when Todd Johns and his brother-in-law, Randy Hinck, started Pork Pullin' Plowboys, their competition team. For the next six years, Todd and Randy would travel all over the country, participating in competitions, perfecting their craft and learning what makes truly great barbecue. Operation BBQ Relief was founded in May 2011 in response to a need for relief efforts in tornado-stricken Joplin, Missouri, a community of about 50,000 residents. Volunteers from competition BBQ teams from eight states answered the need to help feed displaced families, police, fire, National Guard and emergency personnel. Since then, OPERATION BBQ RELIEF has served over 9 million BBQ meals in situations most of us hope we never face. Stan Hays is CEO of this organization.

Keith Karaff is the Executive Director of CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International). Each year CASI sanctions nearly 400 domestic and international chili cook-offs as qualifying events for the CASI Terlingua International Chili Championships, known as TICC. These sanctioned events raise approximately $1,000,000 annually for the local and national charities that work with the cook-off organizers. Luke Darnell is the pitmaster of Old Virginia Smoke, which has been competing on the KCBS Barbecue Circuit for the last several years. Winner of multiple grand championships, reserve grand championships, and many other awards, Old Virginia Smoke also became the World Barbecue Champion, winning that title at the World Food Championships in Orange Beach, Alabama. He also teaches backyard BBQ classes, which is of particular interest to us. Luke resides in Bristow, Virginia, which he unabashedly credits with the origin of American BBQ.
