  1. Number 1: 388: Why Can't I Let Go When He Sends Me Mixed Messages?

A listener has spent a year chasing a high-profile CEO who disappears for weeks, resurfaces warmly, and never quite commits. She knows the math doesn't add up, so why can't she walk away? Dr. Doug Lisle breaks down the evolutionary psychology behind why women will take a small percentage of a high-value man's time and resources over the full attention of an average one, using the "big fish" and "captain's paradise" framework to explain status, mate value, and the cost-benefit calculus running under the surface. Dr. Lisle unpacks the concept of women as two-factor mating machines, why conscientious people get stuck spinning in decision loops, and the exact move this listener should have made months ago to force clarity. 0:00 Cold open: the cost-benefit analysis of every mystery 0:24 Listener question: chasing an unavailable CEO for a year 2:31 Why women slept with JFK even with Jackie in the room 4:44 Proximal vs. distal reasons for our behavior 5:49 The Gray Shrike mystery and hidden motivations 7:15 Why 10% of a rich man beats 100% of an average one 7:47 Women as two-factor mating machines 10:10 How the Stone Age brain reads resources and status 14:01 Calculating a CEO's "fancy genes" and social capital 15:51 You're a "Plan D" prospect, and that's not nothing 17:32 The real reason he's "too busy at work" 18:16 How your mind runs virtual reality simulations 25:12 The fox, the corporation, and 2 trillion bits per second 25:41 Tracking probability estimates like a missing cat 33:26 The "adult sons" line: how he signaled false commitment 35:32 Male "true lies" and lowering her guard 39:00 A Captain's Paradise: living two lives at once 40:04 Why "Plan D" doesn't mean not fancy 43:50 What to actually say to hold his feet to the fire 44:42 Why highly conscientious people spin in circles longest 48:29 The real estate deal analogy: reducing the variance 52:56 Final verdict: it's time to yank the line Beat Your Genes is an evolutionary psychology podcast co-hosted by Dr. Doug Lisle, PhD, and Nathan Gershfeld, D.C. 2. Number 2: 391: Part 3 - Dr. Lisle's New Book: Sherlock Holmes and the Secret of Life Interview Part 2 of 3

Dr. Doug Lisle wraps up the three-part series on Sherlock Holmes and the Secret of Life by explaining why almost no one has ever filmed a real, unscripted therapy session, why he chose to tell this book as a dialogue between Holmes and Dilbert Peabody rather than a standard chapter-by-chapter self-help format, and why he's now ready to go back to live demonstrations now that the underlying theory is finally written down. He traces his own intellectual lineage from Darwin to Richard Dawkins to Leda Cosmides and John Tooby, explains why he considers evolutionary psychology the most significant revolution in the history of thought, and talks through who this book is really written for. Nathan closes out the series with ordering details for the book. Dr. Doug Lisle announces his new book, Sherlock Holmes and the Secret of Life, more than a decade in the making. In the first of a three-part series, Dr. Lisle traces the book's twisting 12-year path: the early collaboration with Jen Howk (a former guest) and why she ultimately left to write her own book, the dozens of discarded titles and false starts, and the moment in 2014 when the book's true voice finally clicked. He also shares the personal story behind his own evolutionary psychology awakening, from discovering Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene to reading Carl Sagan as a teenager, and explains why understanding evolution is the key to making the most of your one life. 4. Number 4: Perfect on Paper, But Not for Me - Mate Value, Attraction, and the Disagreeable Personality

Most people assume mate value is a fixed, rankable number and that attraction follows logically from it. Dr. Lisle says that is the wrong model entirely. Mate value has deep objectivity across a population, but your personal experience of any given partner is completely subjective - and those two truths are not in conflict. The confusion between them is costing people real answers about their own lives. In this episode, Dr. Lisle works through three listener questions that all circle the same territory: how personality shapes our social lives, why disagreeable people struggle to hold friendships, and why a woman married to an objectively high-value man finds herself drawn to men who look worse on paper. He explains the mating search image, the leap of hope, mutation load theory, the mechanics of disagreeable personality in social settings, and why shy people consistently take what comes to them rather than going after what they might actually want more. 0:36 Question 1: Being disagreeable isn't something you can fix through social technique - and what you can actually do instead 0:58 The "generosity cologne" strategy: how material generosity offsets the social friction of a difficult personality 10:40 Dale Carnegie, sales training, and why interpersonal technique only works if your personality already supports it 22:35 Question 2: The shy listener's dilemma: why introverts consistently leave friendships and romantic opportunities unclaimed 38:55 Question 3: What "objective mate value" actually means - and why it does not mean what most listeners think 44:28 The mating search image explained: how your DNA builds preferences the way it builds taste receptors 53:00 The leap of hope: why attraction fades after a more thorough assessment of a partner's genetic code Beat Your Genes is co-hosted by evolutionary psychologist Dr. Doug Lisle, PhD and Dr. Nathan Gershfeld, DC.
