Accepting Your Child’s Identity
In this quick chat episode, we delve into the concept of identity with Dr. Lu Lu, a paediatrician, educator and Life Coach who specialises in youth suicide prevention.
Identity begins at birth. A child is born and is immediately assigned a gender by the doctor, midwife and parents. It's the way it has always been done. But this may not be the way your child identifies. Acceptance is a crucial step. Meet Dr. Lu Lu, an expert in youth suicide prevention and a guide for parents of LGBTQ+ children. Dr Lu Lu draws on her personal experiences to help others navigate this path. Dr. Lu Lu shares her insights and experiences, emphasising the challenges many parents face when coming to terms with their child's identity. Dr. Lu Lu's wisdom and personal journey serve as a source of guidance for parents and a testament to the importance of acceptance and understanding. What makes a cycle breaker? In this episode, we are privileged to sit down and have a profound conversation with Dr. Mariel Buqué, a remarkable leader in the field of trauma. Dr. Mariel holds a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology from Columbia University and is now a distinguished Trauma Psychologist. She's the author of Break The Cycle: A Guide To Healing Intergenerational Trauma, a must-read for anyone seeking to understand and heal from the impact of intergenerational trauma.
In this episode Dr Mariel shares her own story of generational trauma and her path to healing. What truly stands out in our conversation is the revelation that when Dr. Mariel was pursuing her degree, the clinical model all psychologists were trained under was not based on trauma. Students, including Dr. Mariel, were consistently sharing stories of trauma repeating across generations, but the term "intergenerational trauma" was never used throughout her years of study, and this was less than a decade ago. This fact highlights how recent the concept of intergenerational trauma is. We are among the first generations with the tools to comprehend how generational trauma is perpetuated, how we can address it, and what it means for our descendants. We are at a unique juncture in history, with a golden opportunity to break these cycles for our families – an honor and privilege we can't take lightly. Dr. Mariel shares invaluable insights in this episode, and we invite you to join us in exploring her story and expertise. You can find Dr Mariel Buqué spilling the Tea on Instagram and via her Website

In this compelling quick chat episode, we delve into a story of immense courage and resilience, exploring the journey of a survivor of child abuse who found the strength to confront her past and seek justice. Lynn Crook's journey is a testament to the incredible power within each of us when we choose to confront our traumatic past and hold those responsible accountable.
Lynn's journey begins with the revelation that she had buried memories of abuse endured at the hands of her own father. For years, her recollections were limited to positive memories, leaving her unaware of the deeply traumatic experiences she had repressed. It wasn't until her mid-forties that these repressed memories began to resurface.
With the support of therapy and the courage to confront her father, who adamantly denied the allegations, Lynn made a life-changing decision. She resolved to pursue justice for the abuse she suffered as a child through the legal system, a journey that would demand immense strength and determination. Standing up in this way, especially against one's own family, is an incredibly challenging and courageous act. Lynn's unwavering commitment to seeking the truth and pursuing justice persisted over many years, even as the False Memory Syndrome Foundation emerged, a group founded by parents accused of child abuse to discredit the recollections of adults about their childhood experiences.
Lynn's journey led her to write a profoundly important book titled False Memories: The Deception That Silenced Millions shedding light on the complexities of memory and abuse. You can find a link to purchase her book HERE. Lynn Crook's story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the profound strength it takes to confront childhood trauma and seek justice. Her journey reminds us that healing from trauma is possible, even in the face of immense challenges, and that the power to stand up against child abuse resides within each survivor. If you or someone you know is dealing with trauma or seeking recovery, Lynn's story offers hope, inspiration, and a path toward healing.

Emotional abuse—and its far-reaching effects. Anna believed she’d had a good childhood, there were annual family holidays and no obvious disadvantages. However, the journey to healing began when Anna became a mother and faced a startling realization about her own past. Anna's daughter's behavior proved to be extremely challenging, and Anna found herself plagued by intense thoughts of harming her child. Fearing for her family's well-being, Anna and her loved ones sought help and were admitted to a groundbreaking facility in Europe known as a social pediatric center. Here, they were meticulously studied and observed by experts in the field over many weeks. The results of this evaluation left Anna in a state of shock. The professionals told her that there was nothing wrong with her child, but they suspected that Anna herself was struggling with depression and had likely experienced childhood emotional neglect. Childhood emotional neglect is a subtle and insidious form of abuse that can be incredibly difficult to identify, even for the person who has endured it. What makes matters more complex is the silence surrounding mental health within families, where talking about these issues is often stigmatized, leading to the normalization of living with mental health challenges. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Anna's journey of self-discovery and healing. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of acknowledging emotional abuse and its lasting impact on individuals and families.

Panic Attacks: The Facts out now! on the HEAL blog.
Part Two. In Part One Beck shared the truth of her chaotic childhood. Now, Beck shares her remarkable journey to healing, which included grappling with debilitating blackout panic attacks. Beck's unwavering determination to forge a brighter future for herself and her children is nothing short of inspirational. Beck came to the understanding that she wasn't born with anxiety or panic attacks and therefore, they could not be indicative of her true self. It was this profound realisation that served as her guiding light on the path to recovery, leading her toward wellness and mental stability.
If you only listen to one story this year, make it Beck's. Her resilience and transformation serve as a powerful reminder of the human spirit's capacity to overcome even the most challenging of circumstances.
Beck’s parents split when she was 6 years old and it was agreed that Beck, her mom and siblings would move into her Paternal Grandfather’s home. Instantly, the days of toys, play and having fun were gone. In this house nobody had any rights. There were multiple women and children living in this house and Beck’s life now consisted of school, chores and punishments. When her mother finally left this situation, she moved Beck and her siblings into her Maternal grandparents home. However, the chaos continued. The truth is that Beck had been sexually abused by her Paternal Grandfather and now the Maternal grandfather she loved and trusted, also began to sexually abuse her. This story references the abuse Beck suffered, but we do not go into detail. This is not our focus. We are here to tell Beck’s story. An incredible, resilient and yet highly traumatised little girl who grew into a young woman who decided she would never allow that abuse define her and fought every step of the way to get back to a normal life.

This week on the HEAL blog 12 Steps To Self Love After Physical Abuse
In this quick chat episode, I speak with Nathalia who endured a challenging upbringing marked by a mother with narcissistic and controlling tendencies. Nathalia did not recognise this as abuse until very recently in her life because it was normal to her. The familiarity of this abuse saw Nathalia marry a man who exhibited similar narcissistic and controlling traits. Over a span of 16 years, the abuse within this marriage escalated to a disturbing degree, with Nathalia eventually convinced that she was the abusive one in the relationship. In Nathalia's story, we observe how this trauma has transcended generations, affecting her mother, herself, and her daughter. Each, in their own way, accepted emotional and physical abuse throughout their lives.
