  • Will global warming ruin French wine production?
Global warming is having a profound impact on the molecular make-up of grapes and therefore what we put in our wine glasses. According to one US study, the amount of land favourable to vineyards in Europe could be reduced by 68% in 2050. French vineyards now have no choice but to adapt or disappear, as this report explains. A programme prepared by Ellen Gainsford & Florence Viala.

  • South Sudan: A rare look at both sides of the civil war
The brutal civil war in South Sudan is now well into its fourth year and shows no sign of ending. After violent clashes between government and opposition forces in the capital last July, the unrest has now spread to the previously peaceful Equatoria region, close to Uganda. A peace deal signed between President Kiir and the rebels hangs in the balance, with opposition leader Machar forced into exile. FRANCE 24 reports exclusively from both government and rebel-controlled parts of Equatoria.

  • Qatar out in the cold: What's behind the diplomatic crisis?
The small but energy-rich country of Qatar normally basks in the heat. But earlier this month, several of its powerful Gulf neighbours decided to leave it out in the cold. Led by Saudi Arabia, those Sunni countries cut their ties and imposed economic sanctions, accusing Qatar - an ally of Iran - of supporting terrorism. But are those accusations justified? Our reporters Philomène Remy and Jasmin Lavoie in Doha have been finding out.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Embedded with Iraqi troops battling to retake Mosul from IS group
FRANCE 24 brings you an exclusive report filmed by Roméo Langlois and Amar Al Hameedawi, our reporters in Iraq. Our team on the ground were able to follow elite Iraqi forces as they track down Islamic State (IS) group jihadists in the district of Zinjali, one of the last neighbourhoods before Mosul's Old City, the terrorists' stronghold. The Old City is where French journalist Stephan Villeneuve and his Iraqi colleague Bakhtiyar Addad were killed in a mine explosion on Monday. >> On France24.com: French journalist killed in Iraq's Mosul

  • Syria: The battle to retake IS group stronghold of Raqqa
The battle to retake Raqqa, the Islamic State group's stronghold in Syria, is well under way. A coalition made up of mainly Kurdish forces with some Arab fighters has been leading the action on the frontline. They have been regaining control of the city bit by bit, checking each and every house as they liberate neighbourhoods. This report from France 2 takes a closer look. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Jessica Sestilli and Elom Marcel Toble.

  • What's behind the protests in northern Morocco?
With France's president visiting Morocco this week, FRANCE 24 reports from Al Hoceima, capital of the Rif, an underdeveloped region plagued by social unrest. It all began six months ago, when a fishmonger was crushed to death by a garbage truck while trying to salvage his illegal catch of swordfish. A peaceful protest movement followed. Since the arrest of the protest movement's leader on May 29, his supporters have taken to the streets every single night. They demand his release, as well as jobs and better public services.

  • Racism in Italian football: The ugly side of the beautiful game
Although Italian football is enjoying a renaissance thanks to good results, the championship still faces recurring problems with racism. Italy is in fact the worst affected country among the big European championships. So how does racism manifest itself in Italian football? And what is being done about it? Our correspondent Natalia Mendoza reports. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Laura Burloux.

  • Security situation deteriorating in Afghan capital Kabul
In the past three weeks, Kabul has endured no less than three terrorist attacks. The May 31 truck bombing was one of the deadliest in the country's history with at least 150 dead and over 300 injured. Despite decades of foreign aid and Western military supervision, the security situation in the Afghan capital seems to be deteriorating at an alarming pace. Is the government losing the fight, not only against the Taliban but also the Islamic State group? Our correspondents report. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Laura Burloux.

  • Portugal's recipe for economic recovery
Throughout the financial crisis from 2008 to 2010, Portugal was on the brink of bankruptcy. But now the tide has turned. The nation is experiencing an economic revival: unemployment rates have decreased, while the public deficit has fallen to its lowest point in more than 40 years. So what explains this turnaround in the nation's fortunes? This report takes a closer look. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Jessica Sestilli and Laura Burloux.

  • Used and abused: Japan's foreign trainees
More than 200,000 foreign trainees were working in Japan last year – an increase of 25% from the year before. These trainees are helping Japan address its labour shortage, but they are seen as a temporary solution. Despite a tight labour market and a shrinking population, Japan is still resistant to large-scale immigration. And the trainees are often the victims of abuse by unscrupulous employers, as our correspondents report. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Laura Burloux.
