  • France struggling to recruit prison imams
In today's edition we meet with a Muslim prison chaplain, an imam who visits French prisons in an effort to shield inmates from radical Islamism. Many observers accuse the overcrowded French prison system of becoming a fertile breeding ground for radicalisation. While prison imams are indeed proving to be vital elements in the fight against religious extremism, applicants for the job are very scarce. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Gaelle Essoo, Aline Schmidt and Claire Pryde.

  • Drug dealers of hope: Activists fight for access to life-saving Hepatitis C cure
Hepatitis C, a liver disease, causes approximately 500,000 deaths every year. Luckily, there is a miracle cure patented by the American pharmaceutical giant Gilead. But for most patients in the West it's unaffordable. In India, meanwhile, local pharmaceutical companies are authorised by their government to make generic copies, and can provide the entire course of treatment for less then 5% of the usual cost. Faced with this situation, health activists across the world have set up "Buyers' clubs", creating networks that allow them to buy the treatment and ship it to those who need it across the world. It's an undercover operation, and a logistical nightmare, but it saves thousands of lives.
Our team reports on these activists' battle against Big Pharma, which is attempting to restrict access to the cure to Hepatitis C, this as millions of lives hang in the balance.

  • Like it or not, immigration is Brexit's central topic
Immigration seems to be the most contentious topic in today's so-called "Brexit" referendum in the UK. A record number of people arrived in the UK in 2014, although bringing immigration down to the tens of thousands was a key election pledge of Prime Minister David Cameron. "Leave" campaigners say that promise is impossible to keep if Britain stays in the EU. But the "Remain" camp argues that immigrants bring more to the UK than they take out. Our team reports from England and Wales. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Aline Schmidt and Claire Pryde.

  • Brexit could lead to second Scottish independence referendum
With just one day to go before the UK's referendum on EU membership, we head to Scotland. Party leaders there support the "Remain" camp, and polls suggest most Scots will vote to stay in the EU. But if the overall result goes the other way, that could trigger a second Scottish independence referendum. Will this possibility influence pro-independence voters? Our team reports from Glasgow. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Aline Schmidt and Claire Pryde.

  • French island of Mayotte on verge of collapse
The Indian Ocean island of Mayotte has been a department of France since 2011, but locals feel abandoned by the country's central authorities. After more than two weeks of general strikes, which have often turned into riots, Mayotte is at a dead end, faced with illegal immigration, crime, unemployment and poverty. Despite the French prime minister announcing a series of measures at the start of this month, locals say the island is on the verge of collapse. Our team reports from Mayotte. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Jessica Sestilli, Aline Schmidt and Claire Pryde.

  • French city near Spanish border offers safe haven for refugees
To mark World Refugee Day, we take a look at a city in the French Basque country that's taken a pro-active stance in providing support to refugees, mostly Syrians, who have fled the ongoing war in their country. At a local level, volunteer workers, neighbours and mayors are playing an essential role in helping improve the integration of these people within French society. Our team reports from Hendaye, close to the Spanish border. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Anna Kowalska, Elom Marcel Toble and Claire Pryde.

  • Is Belgium becoming a failed state?
Belgium's image has taken a hit worldwide in recent months. From jihadist cells in the district of Molenbeek to the failure to prevent the Paris and Brussels terror attacks, Belgian law enforcement has drawn fierce criticism. Strikes have also multiplied in recent weeks, with even judges and prison wardens carrying out industrial action. Our team in Belgium takes a look at what's behind the country's woes. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Elom Marcel Toble.

  • Mired in doping scandal, Russia awaits Rio verdict
On Friday June 17, the International Athletics Federation will decide if Russian athletes can take part in the Rio Olympics in August. Russia is at the centre of the world's largest-ever doping scandal, with politicians, coaches and athletes accused of involvement in falsifying samples and blackmailing sportsmen. A number of reforms have been introduced in Russia since the scandal broke. But will they be enough to allow the country's athletes to go for gold? Our correspondents report. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Elom Marcel Toble and Claire Pryde.

  • Low intensity but real: The return of Mozambique's civil war
When Mozambique’s civil war ended back in 1992, the main rival guerrilla forces of FRELIMO and RENAMO became rival political parties. But recently, the reconciliation process has fallen apart and power struggles to control the country’s vast natural resource wealth have intensified. Civilians are being killed or are disappearing at the hands of security forces and thousands have been forced to flee their villages. Our team reports from Mozambique. Warning: This report contains graphic footage.

  • Bangladesh: Is NGO BRAC a parallel state?
In this edition we go behind the scenes of the world's largest NGO. The Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee, or BRAC, was set up in 1972. Now it has offices in a dozen countries, working on everything from tackling poverty to empowering women, while also providing health and banking services. But as Surabhi Tandon reports, questions have been raised about the way BRAC operates, blurring the lines between "classic" NGOs and corporations. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Elom Marcel Toble and Claire Pryde.
