  • The historic trial, conviction and sentencing of Chad’s former dictator Hissène Habré
In this edition we take a look at the historic trial, conviction and sentencing of Chad’s former leader, Hissène Habré in Senegal. It is the first time that an African country’s domestic court has tried another country’s ex-head of state on rights charges. On May 30, Habré was sentenced to life in prison for committing crimes against humanity, war crimes and acts of torture. The head of the commission in charge of investigating Habré's crimes says at least 40,000 people died under Habré’s rule. With the help of thousands of police agents, Habré effectively neutralised his political opponents during his 1982-1990 rule by throwing them in detention centres in which the chances of survival were slim.
Habrés historic trial and the loopholes that allowed him years of impunity are at the core of a documentary made by Magali Serre. In this edition, we show a few excerpts.
The full documentary will be broadcast on France 24, and available online, as of July 9. Stay tuned.

  • Fan zones in spotlight as terrorism fears hang over Euro 2016
The start of the Euro 2016 football tournament, with its bandwagon of players, fans and media, presents a major security headache for French authorities still grappling with a state of emergency. The country remains on high alert in the wake of the November 13 terror attacks, which included suicide bombings outside the Stade de France stadium north of Paris.
Security will be especially tight at the official "fan zone" at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, where up to 90,000 fans at a time will come to enjoy the atmosphere and sporting action.
With its giant screens, restaurants and a concert hall, the Paris fan zone resembles a small town. Similar venues have been set up in the nine other cities hosting football matches.
Critics fear the concentration of people gathered in one place will present would-be terrorists with a soft target.
They note that months of street protests and the continued terrorist threat mean security forces are stretched exceptionally thin.
But officials say every possible step has been taken to ensure fans can feel safe, while also enjoying the football party.
FRANCE 24’s Karim Hakiki, Jean Barrère and Luke Brown have gone to take a closer look.

  • Witness protection: The Italian example
After testifying against the ringleader of last November's terrorist attacks in Paris, one woman, known only as Sonia, has been forced into hiding but says she feels abandoned by the state. Up until now, the French justice system has only offered very limited protection to witnesses. A bill to strengthen the country’s witness protection and boost the fight against organised crime and terror was finally signed into law last week. The new law gives French magistrates new means to investigate since it provides for improved protection of witnesses living under threat. This is a challenge that the magistrates in Italy know only too well: In 2001, the status "Justice Witness" was introduced into Italian law in a bid to fight the Mafia. Since then, hundreds of people have come forward to help police by providing important information. People feel safe in doing so since the program allows witnesses to assume new identities, transfer to other regions, and have both housing and compensation provided to them by the state. But these witnesses still often lead very difficult lives, filled with fear. Our correspondent in Italy, Natalia Mendoza, met two witnesses who had been threatened by the Sicilian Mafia.

  • Governing a Ukrainian region: The tough new job of Georgia’s former president
One of the more interesting social experiments that has been conducted within international politics is celebrating its’ first year anniversary. Mikheil Saakashvili, the former president of Georgia, is currently the governor of a region in another country: in Ukraine. While still in office in Georgia, Saakashvili was praised for his corruption-cutting reforms, but by the time he left, his popularity had plummeted and he stood accused of authoritarianism. But when Ukraine's President Petro Porosh Following the 2014 “Maidan” revolution, Saakashvili brought in a team of young, foreign, and educated reformers and promised to make Odessa a showcase for Ukraine's transformation. Above all, he vowed to tame the rampant corruption that was plaguing Ukraine's main port city. But a year on, and his main projects are - at best - still “works-in-progress”. Saakashvili has also become embroiled in bitter conflicts with the local political elite, but now, also with the same Ukrainian president who once employed him. Gulliver Cragg reports.

  • Trump causes deep divisions within Republican Party
He's the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and seemingly unstoppable. But billionaire tycoon Donald Trump's often controversial rhetoric has practically torn the GOP apart, pitting grassroots supporters against the Republican elite. The deeply divided party is scrambling to unite ahead of the November election. While some have reluctantly jumped on the Trump bandwagon, others hold out hope that a so-called "Never Trump" movement can put the brakes on his march to the White House. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Laura Burloux and Claire Pryde.

  • Kulturschock’: The challenge of integrating refugees into society
More than a million migrants came to Germany last year. Both the German population and the refugees now face the major challenge of how to integrate them into society. In some ways it is a real clash of cultures, but a clash that many local people are working hard to try to ease. To understand the scale of this task, we went to Schlotheim, in Thuringia. A small town of 4,000 inhabitants, which is currently host to nearly 800 asylum seekers. A programme prepared by Yong Chim and Claire Pryde.

  • Unsettling surge in murders of Bangladesh’s activists and freethinkers
Bangladesh has recently been hit by a wave of murders of prominent activists and bloggers. According to US officials, there have been 35 attacks in the last 14 months alone. While 23 of those have been claimed by groups with links to terrorist organisations, the situation on the ground is far more complex. In fact, many of the people living under threat believe the attacks are more to do with internal politics, stemming from a power struggle between the government and the opposition. A programme prepared by Yong Chim, Jessica Sestili and Aline Schmidt
