This week I will be joined by my colleague and friend Jesse Macbeth. He is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Pennsylvania. You can find Jesse at www.abetterlifetherapy.com
Today we are going to focus on Discernment Therapy. Discernment Therapy is working with a couple to figure out if they want to move forward with their relationship.
There are typically three outcomes. They are as follows: Three paths – 1. real effort to try and save a relationship, 2. we are going to divorce or end the relationship, 3. we are going to keep the status quo and stay where we are, (the last one is about 12%of the outcome).
The first question for you Jesse is; should couples go to couples therapy even if they think they are going to end the relationship? Short answer, YES.
Discernment Therapy is to gain clarity around why you are where you are in your relationship.
This helps to give both parties confidence and to help them focus on what both parties want moving forward.
When you do Discernment Therapy, do they know what they are coming in for?
Sometimes, most of the time they are in a weird place and don't want to give up.
There is a difference between traditional couples therapy or marriage counseling. One person is leaning out and the other feels hurt, betrayed or the loss of trust.
The goal isn't to build them up but to figure out why they are here now.
How do they get to the point of looking into therapy? Major breaches of trust is the most common reason. Somebody may have felt the spark die but don't want to end it without trying.
When you are able to say one is leaning out, it is a positive part of Discernment Therapy. This really helps them feel there is something worth working for!
