One of my favorite topics and one of the reasons I started this podcast - mental health in motherhood. This week I talked with Lauren and Megan of the Matrescence about what things impact our mental health, how our mental health changes after becoming a mom, and how to support our mental health.
The Matrescence was born out of a desire to provide more maternal support after a professional and personal recognition in the gap of care for women. We combined our medical, Lauren RN, BSN, Psychiatric Mental Health NP, and business (Megan) backgrounds—with our experience as seasoned mothers of three— to change the landscape of maternal mental health. We provide integrative mental wellness support and community to and through motherhood. Our global community, actionable tools + expert-curated guides, and bimonthly peer support calls encourage women to embrace the transformation, embody forever wellness, and enrich their motherhood journey.

Morgan Van Epp Cutlip developed an interest in romantic relationship health at a young age, and traveled with her father when he first started teaching the How to Avoid Falling for Jerk program over 20 years ago.
Since, Morgan has completed her Bachelor’s degree in psychology at Miami University, her Master’s in Human Development and Family Science at the Ohio State University, and earned her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Akron. While at Ohio State, Morgan worked on a research project that evaluated the effectiveness of the No Jerk program with single Army soldiers. She was lead author on the research article published about the study, which was awarded the 2008 Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal article of the year. Her dissertation was a qualitative study on the Relationship Attachment Model with married couples and can be downloaded here. She is happily married to her husband, Chad, and is the proud mother to Effie and Roy.
John Van Epp, PhD in Counseling/Psychology, is the author of How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk, published by McGraw-Hill, which blends in-depth research with humorous stories to provide a map for making healthy relationship choices.
Dr. Van Epp’s evidence-based relationship programs were developed from the combination of his twenty-five years of clinical counseling in his private practice, of his previous position as founding pastor of a nondenominational church, and of his extensive reviews of research in premarital, marital and family relations from teaching graduate marriage and family coursework as an adjunct professor. These relationship programs include: PICK (How to Avoid Falling for a Jerk—for singles of all ages), Couple LINKS (for committed couples), and Our Home Runs (for entire families and designed to facilitate family bonding); Home Run Dads; Home Run Parents; Ultimate Spiritual Resilience & Relationships (R&R—for individuals and couples to build core spiritual values and the skills to integrate those values into major domains of life); and Relationship Counseling with the RAM (a professional course that provides a model for assessing and counseling relationship concerns).

How many times do you ask yourself why is my child (fill in the blank)? This week, Mariko shares how to understand the why behind our children's behaviors and work through the behavior challenges.
From Mariko:
I am a mother of two and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. As a parent coach/behavior consultant, I work with families to address challenges that arise in daily life: tantrums, not listening, aggression (hitting, biting, throwing), bedtime routine/sleep issues, toilet training, picky eating/mealtimes, self-care skills, adjusting to a new sibling, sibling fights, academic and behavior challenges in school, you name it. I am dedicated to supporting parents to come up with functional, effective, and easy-to-implement strategies that will work for their children and parenting style. All of the strategies I recommend are evidence-based interventions, and most of them I have implemented myself as a parent. My goal is to increase desired behavior and reduce/eliminate unwanted or unhealthy behavior so that your kids and you can thrive!
I graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, and earned a Master of Arts in special education from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). I worked with children with autism and other special needs for over 17 years, earning my Board Certification as a Behavior Analyst in 2010. Before starting my own consultation practice, I was a Clinical Director at a leading agency that provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment to neurodiverse children.
When I became a parent, I became a better clinician. I understand the daily struggles, stressors, and guilt that come with being a parent. I am here to help you work through challenges so you see positive behavior change that you, your child, and your village will be able to sustain long-term.
