For this episode I am using using Hope for Today for steps 8 and 9. Tune in next week for our final episode in this series finishing up the steps.  I had already done an episode on Amends in season 3 ep 18, so I wanted to find a another layer to discuss for this book study.  I found a great reading for Step 8 that reminds us of the importance of putting ourselves on this list and forgiving ourselves for our past behaviors. I loved the reading for step 9 that offered the power of living amends and the reminder to "Let It Begin with Me." By being willing to make amends, and then to do so when it is healthy for all involved, we are cleaning our side of the street and letting go of our past behaviors and stepping forward into our True Selves.

For this episode I am using using the workbook Reaching for Personal Freedom to discuss steps 4 through 7. It can feel very daunting to make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. However in Al-Anon and Soul Recovery, this powerful practice allows us to look honestly  at our patterns through our pain and resentments so that we can see the patterns and belief systems that we have developed that are holding us back. Then by sharing our life and awareness with another person and Higher Power we are allowing all our pieces to be witnessed without judgement and letting go of guilt and shame.  We recognize our shortcomings and defense mechanisms that we have been living from and in turn see that we can live from the opposite expressions, choosing the assets of our experiences to live a life connected with Higher Power and be free.

I was inspired by the quote "Love for others without the foundation of self love becomes a loss of boundaries, codependence, (addiction), and a painful and fruitless search for intimacy."  (Sharon Salzburg,  Loving Kindness - The Revolutionary Art of Happiness)

We may not have been given this foundation of self-love that we wanted or needed, however we can always go back and reinforce that foundation in our spiritual house.  Soul Recovery is about turning the attention to ourselves and choosing a new way to live a happy and healthy life.

For this episode I am using using Paths to Recovery, reading and reflecting on Step Three.  'We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over the the care of God, as we understand God.'  This is where we surrender and allow the weight of the world to be lifted from our shoulders.  In step three we allow ourselves to be cared for, and trust that we are supported and guided by a Higher Power.  It is not easy to let go of this control, but when we finally surrender we discover a new freedom and happiness in ourselves and in our lives.

I wanted to interview Erin because she has such a powerful story of Soul Recovery.  A cancer diagnosis at 38 years old in 2019 offered her choice. Stay where she was in life that was easy and good or listen to her heart and follow her deepest desires and live her best life?  I have been inspired by her journey and how she has allowed Higher Power to lead her along the way to live her best life.

STEP TWO- HOPE & FREEDOM
Using Hope for Today I am reading and reflecting on Step Two which  is about freedom and being restored to sanity by our Higher Power.  "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity." This step gives us hope that there can be a different path for us even if the world around us continues to be complex and overwhelming. In this step we become willing to see that there is a Higher Power, and that it can bring us peace.

Impermanence teaches that everything changes and nothing lasts forever. We can either see this as a spiritual gift or we can be in discomfort and resistance- it is our choice.  There are seasons of change in nature and in our lives and both are important parts of the cycle of life.  Soul Recovery teaches us to be open to impermanence, and embrace the seasons of change in our own lives by turning the attention to ourselves and letting go of control.

STEP ONE- HONESTY
Using Hope for Today I am reading and reflecting on Step One.   " We take Al-Anon's First Step, admitting that we are powerless over the facts of our situation and the other people involved and that our lives had become unmanageable."  

The start to our awareness that we can not control people and situations outside of ourselves and that our desire to do so has made us unhappy and dissatisfied with our lives.  There is an answer in Soul Recovery, by turning the attention to ourselves and taking real control of the only place we have it... in ourselves.

In the old school of forgiveness one person says they are sorry and the other person forgives them - just to get on with it.  This old way of forgiveness can mean that we are actually pushing down our feelings and allowing a resentment or pain to continue to fester in our emotional system.  In Soul Recovery we are taking care of ourselves and clearing out our emotional system and truly letting go of those old pains that can be making us physically or spiritually sick.  Forgiveness from a Soul Recovery perspective is about looking at the old feelings and memories with compassion and allowance and letting go of the guilt and resentment so we can take our power back and be at peace.
