The more I explore the concept of self-development, the more I raise questions around the so-called answers I stumble on. It seems to me we are all balancing on a self-development tightrope, hoping to steady the wobbles. When hindsight is upon us, we seem to accept the idea that our struggles fuel our triumphs, yet we rarely accept the struggles when in them we are immersed. But can we? If we can, should we? And if we were to do so, would we still be driven towards the triumph that potentially awaits?

It's quite ironic that Nicole Madigan and Steve met and eventually married due to the peculiar messages sent by Karissa Owens after they crossed paths at their kids' local footy match one day.
At what point does someone's contact cross the line from being inappropriate and perhaps a little awkward to becoming unlawful stalking, deemed a criminal offense? Much like domestic abuse and coercive control, the lines here can become blurred, and for those on the receiving end, understanding the psychology behind the stalker's intentions can have a devastating effect on a victim-survivor's mental, social, and financial well-being.
For over three years, Karissa tormented Nicole with unsolicited vulgar and derogatory messages. She created fake social media profiles under her alias, displayed Nicole's confidential details online, and even discovered the date, time, and venue of Nicole and Steve's wedding... now there's a guest you don't want showing up on what should be the best day of your life.
In this episode, we discuss Nicole's experience, society's attitude towards stalking, and the shortcomings of the legal system in dealing with what can escalate into an extremely dangerous and debilitating situation.

"Nobody wants to go to court..." I say this every week at the beginning of this show as Testart Family Lawyers have been a strong and loyal supporter for the voices and stories shared by our brilliant guests. And they're right, nobody's eagerly raising their hand for a courtroom battle. Marc Testart joins me in this episode to delve into various aspects of marriage, separation, family dynamics, conflict resolution, and how to navigate the emotionally charged experience of ending a relationship.
We discuss everything from managing us in the midst of our situations to handling the complexities of dividing assets and negotiating child custody arrangements. And naturally, in line with recent episodes I've continued to explore the question, 'WHAT IS LOVE?' from different angles, and thus I've thrown this question to Marc to provide his perspective (as both a divorce lawyer and, of course, a human).

Say a spritely hello to the cat amongst the medical pigeons, Professor Ian Harris. A lively presence in his field, Ian is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery who was inclined to tuck the scalpel in the back of the drawer and instead pose what is proving to be a pertinent question: 'Do these surgeries offer more than just a placebo effect to one's recovery?'
Knee arthroscopies, back fusions and cardiac stenting are amongst the common procedures in question with the Prof, yet in our chat, Ian sheds light not just on the lack of evidence around their efficacy, but also highlights the potential risks and adverse consequences. Sure, the placebo effect may have its merits, but is it justifiable against the recovery time, expense and discomfort associated with these invasive surgeries?

No experts perse, in the driver's seat for this conversation... just a couple of humans who have indulged (pardon the pun) in a whole lot of conversations around food and eating over the years. Given that we both have backgrounds in fitness & sport (and eating firsthand, would you believe it), we thought we'd dive into a freestyle banter about how humans function (or perhaps so often struggle to) around food. We discuss everything from eating disorders to disordered eating and how we (me, you, us) navigate the psychological, sociological, emotional and physiological aspects of our often-complex relationships with food.

A short episode today of me riffing on a question around whether we know what really matters to us or do we just tell ourselves that what we already know is what matters to us... are we so embedded in the ecosystem of habits and routines in our lives that we just absorb the familiar and believe that because it has our time and attention, that it is what really matters to us? Maybe it once did... but does it still?

Lauren Roxburgh, or The Body Whisperer as Gwyneth Paltrow refers to her, is a world-renowned wellness educator and best-selling author, and I was fortunate enough to indulge in this super fascinating conversation! We dive deep into understanding fascia - the living matrix in our own tissues and it's relationship with the 12 systems of the body (and the mind).
Could it be that something as simple as foam rolling (a little Netflix and roll, as Lo-Rox calls it) could be the key to unlocking the secret language of our bodies and shedding our emotional armour? Sounds like it quite possibly could be...
Tune in to hear all about it from The Body Whisperer herself!

Recently there seems to have been a significant shift in our understanding (and perhaps often misunderstanding) of ADHD, particularly in adults. I sure know my own perspective, understanding, and personal experiences have evolved considerably. So do dive deep into this seemingly complex topic, I did what I always do, and sought out one of the foremost experts in the field.
I launched into this conversation with several top-of-mind questions... Such as, what does the current diagnostic process for ADHD entail, and are there concerns about underdiagnosis, overdiagnosis, or self-diagnosis? When should someone suspect they have ADHD, and is pursuing a diagnosis always the appropriate step? What strategies and resources are available to help individuals effectively manage the challenges associated with ADHD? Is there any potential connection between ADHD symptoms and menopause or conditions like fibromyalgia?
In this quest for answers, it was Professor Russell Ramsay, who came highly recommended by several experts in the field. Professor Ramsay specialises in the diagnostic assessment of ADHD in adults and the application of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) tailored to the unique needs of adults with ADHD. In addition to this, he co-founded and co-directs the University of Pennsylvania’s Adult ADHD Treatment and Research Program. So yeah, I'm confident we've hit the right source for some solid information!

Unfortunately, Harriet Barnsley knows firsthand what it's like to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. At just 21 years old, while waiting at a bus stop, she and her best friend were struck by two racing, intoxicated drivers. A month later, Harriet emerged from a coma, living a twisted version of the film '50 First Dates' as her short-term memory remained blank, and each morning, Harriet had to relearn what had transpired. As her cognitive abilities gradually returned, she then had to come to terms as she received the devastating news that her best friend had lost her life in the accident.
In this deeply vulnerable conversation, Harriet sheds light on the physical, psychological, and emotional rollercoaster that followed her accident. At times, she shares her experiences and coping strategies in ways she hasn't before, offering a glimpse into the trauma's lasting impact on her mental health.
A gentle trigger warning: we briefly discuss topics like suicidal ideation and mental health. Harriet's openness about these issues is not only courageous but, as she mentions, also a source of healing. Harriet's physical fitness prior to the accident played a crucial role in her promising recovery, making her a true inspiration.

Isn't it interesting (and super annoying) that sometimes amidst our conscious awareness of some aspect of ourselves and our capabilities (in other words 'knowing') we can simultaneously grapple with an unconscious opposing belief (hello imposter syndrome and anxiety). These usually show up and bring us undone at the worst of times, hindering either our performance or even worse, our decision to initiate and have a crack at all. It happens in sport, business, relationships and just life in general. I unpacked this today with Jem amidst another great conversation around happiness, love and deep contentment, and a reflection on what shapes our identity and how our identity shapes our reality.
