In a recent episode, a guest dropped the thought-provoking line right in the midst of our conversation: 'the grass is always greener, but you've got to water it.' That simple (overused but underthought) yet profound idea lingered in my mind for the next few days, so here I am dragging it into today's Selfie-Saturday!
After you've tuned in, best you grab the sprinkler too... time we all start watering our own patches of grass!

Meet Ben Vasiliou, he's CEO of a large Melbourne based youth services not-for-profit doing incredible things for at risk youth and homelessness. A very awesome human I was blessed to speak to about so many things it's almost too difficult to write these show notes. From his experience with neurodiversity, academia & learning. Harnessing his optimal operating system. Having his father become a heroin addict and abandon the family. Experiencing the grief no 16 year old should through the passing of his mother by the time he was 16. Discovering his father wasn't actually even his father anyway. Choosing and un-choosing drugs, crime and the wrong path. His definition of love. Embracing, accepting and honouring his sexuality and navigating the change in family dynamics as his wife and kids embraced his sexuality alongside him.
Intelligent, articulate, compassionate, educated and all that lived experience... This is conversation has a hell of lot to offer and I hope you find it as valuable as I did.

In true Mark & Tiff style, this episode came about by way of my impromptu invitation and thus we freestyled around a number of top-of-mind topics... Some of which were (rudely) Mark dubbing my good self as a knuckle-dragger and oxygen thief by being the type of person who exercises their right to recline their aircraft seat the moment the seatbelt lights are switched off - in fact, I'd like to hear where ya'll sit (pardon the pun) on this.
How our identity and image, such as Mark's ever-evolving surfy haircut brings with it assumptions, perhaps even judgement and how these things influence our interactions with people.
Yet another super fun chat with the lad, even if he was a bit of a grump!!

Imagine if a screenwriter wrote a plot like this: Some dude goes on a trial medication, but it causes a brain seizure, and he collapses... when he wakes up, he develops a peculiar cognitive condition in which he believes that his partner of two decades and mother of his children is an imposter. Yep, this brown-eyed, brunette-haired human is simply masquerading as his blue-eyed, dark-haired life partner of over 20 years... crazy stuff, right!?
I mean, any screenwriter would have to be on some serious hallucinogenic substances to come up with such a story! Except for Abi. She penned it, but it's no creative fiction screenplay... it's her book. Her memoir, in fact, titled "This Is Not A Pity Memoir." And that's not all, amidst all of this unfolding, Abi faced down breast cancer, adding another layer to her journey.
In our conversation, we delve into the cathartic experience of simultaneously being within and chronicling such a remarkable tale. She contemplates the question of ownership: Whose story is it… Jacob's or Abi's? Through it I was also personally drawn to profound contemplation about the nature of love (what even is it), the complexities of forming relationships, and the delicate threads of trust and connection (and reconnection).
Abi is an accomplished screenwriter who has not only paved her way but has also acted as a guiding light for countless female screenwriters. Our chat also delves deeply into this aspect of her journey. Abi is insightful, expressive creative and articulate and I’m beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to spend some time speaking with her.

Raise your hand if you've ever self-sabotaged... I bet you can come up with at least one reason to raise your hand. But what is self-sabotage, why do we do it and most importantly, how can we stop it?
Bobby and I dive deep into this topic which seems to land with almost everyone in one way or another. Why do we stand in our own way? Why do we seemingly deliberately or knowingly do what doesn't work when it goes against the very thing we say or believe we want?
Not only do we discuss strategies and ideas to overcome self-sabotage, but we also explore what's might and might not be self-sabotage and some great questions worth asking about what we perceive is going on beneath the surface.

How often do I talk about the necessity of getting out of our lives for a minute in order to get perspective on what we are in the middle of. What's working? What's not? Who even am I when I'm not in the middle of my own world and eco-system?
Well, talking about it ain't doing it, however I've just returned from a little get away in Vietnam and boy did this philosophy ring true. So in today's episode I'm sharing, pondering and well, I guess you could think of it as a live journalling kind of exercise as I reflect on the impact of getting out of my life for a minute has had on me this time round... Spoiler-alert, I'm still very much trying to figure it all out!

Not one, but two broken backs, an almost amputated leg and a beloved partner lost unexpectedly to suicide... Yet what does Kath Koschel have to say?
"I found a few things at rock bottom. Gratitude and kindness."
As Kath Koschel shares the array of somewhat unimaginable hurdles she has faced, it's the gifts of adversity and gratitude that held her focus every step of the way... and the profound ripple-effect of this is reaching across the globe.
In her mid-twenties, Kath broke her back and was told she may never walk again. Shortly afterwards, she lost her beloved partner Jim to suicide. Then, just as she was piecing her life back together, she was hit by a drunk driver while cycling and forced to relearn to walk a second time.
In the midst of these harrowing experiences, Kath believes she experienced two things in large amounts: adversity and kindness. After relearning to walk for the second time in her life, this realisation kickstarted a 2-month journey around Australia which relied solely on the kindness of strangers. No cash, credit card food or water – and no help from family or friends!
From this journey came the Kindness Factory – a Not for Profit now based across 3 countries which has seen millions of acts of kindness logged. Under Kath’s leadership, the Kindness Factory has worked with Kaplan to develop the Kindness Curriculum, which is embedded in thousands of schools teaching children the power of kindness.
This conversation holds the potential to profoundly reshape your outlook.. It sure did mine!

Mark brought this question to the table, and so true to form we workshopped some thoughts and ideas around it. "Is it the way it is because we want it that way?" To be honest, it's a variate to a question I often ponder and pose to others. Are we merely lip-syncing to the "change is good" anthem while harboring a secret hankering for things to remain comfortably unchanged? Could there be a cheeky little existential curveball in play?
Mark is itching to inject some much-needed structure into his business. But on the flip side, guess who's lurking in the shadows? The fear of waving goodbye to his hard-earned identity. Hopefully some curious questions you might like to ask yourself should you relate to these scenarios.

In 2020 Stephenie Rodriguez attended a work conference in Nigeria where she experienced an unremarkable mosquito bite that seemed typically inconsequential at the time. However, fate had other plans. Just two weeks later, she found herself collapsing on the floor of an airport. A mere 24 hours passed before the digital entrepreneur, globe-trotter and single mother slipped into a coma within the confines of a Boston hospital room, her chances of survival set at a mere 2%.
What Stephenie has navigated, adapted to and overcome amidst these most recent years is nothing short of remarkable. After contracting cerebral malaria and defying the incredibly narrow odds of survival stacked against her, Stephenie has now lost both her feet above the ankle and yet it's fair to say this extraordinary human very much continues to walk through life with a spring in her step, so to speak.
Resilient, courageous and a hell of a go-getter... You'll want a bit of the Rodriguez grit and determination to rub off on you along the way I'm sure of it!

Guess who's Melbourne-bound? That's right, the dulcet Sunday tones of Bobby Cappuccio will soon be recorded right here in my very neighborhood! In this episode Bobby and I discuss the value of getting out of our usual environment and operating system and gaining an outside perspective on what you're in the middle of... Quite top-of-mind for me as I just returned from a short trip to Vietnam, a timely reminder of what such experiences can bring. We also banter about what makes 'home' in terms of where we live and what it's like to relocate and experience different cultures and how it can change us along the way. All that and as usual, more... Enjoy!
