The definition of altruism is the selfless concern for the wellbeing of others. But when we dig deep into the human psyche and look at how neurochemistry drives our behaviour, and thus how the desire to or act of helping others directly affects our neurochemistry and thus our emotions, are we really being altruistic? Or are we actually being manipulatively selfish? Does it even matter either way?
And from a societal and an evolutionary perspective, what's actually the purpose of altruism? Bobby and rummage around the metaphorical altruism attic and see what curious conversational gems we can unpack.
Enjoy!

You know who makes a great accountability partner for me? My trusty bathroom mirror... It's a place my eyeballs are landing on at minimum a couple of times a day and thus makes a great place to throw down some goals and intentions as a twice daily reminder of where I'm headed and what's important to me.
I've talked about the whole 'manifestation' concept before and given my version of thoughts and ideas about it, and whether you're on team 'the-universe-has-my-back' or team 'that's absolute bullsh^t' (I'm somewhere in the middle) I believe there's some pretty solid benefits to adopting a version of this process I'm talking about today.
So, grab ya'self a liquid chalk marker get ready to scribble some crap across that bathroom mirror of yours!

Ashleigh Webb is one of those humans that the moment you meet them, you feel lit up! Well, that was definitely my experience when she recently introduced herself to me at swimming lessons. It really highlights the light and shade of our human experience as I soon after learned of the 'why' behind Ashleigh's June 2023 English Channel swim to raise funds for The Kallan Lodge Library. The library is her tribute to good friend Kallan Lodge, who died by suicide in 2011, and resource and support for those who need it today and tomorrow.
Ashleigh speaks candidly about her own experience surviving suicide in 2007 and the ebbs, flows in insights from her own journey with mental health and making sense of it all along the way. A beautifully vulnerable conversation that though being a tough topic to speak of it's a blessing to hear Ashleigh articulate her experience and perhaps give us strategies and understanding around either our own journey's or how we might better support our loved ones around these challenges.
Did I mention Ashleigh is as chatty as me?? Well she is, so this is part 2 of a two part convo. Enjoy!

"Ten foot tall and not quite bulletproof"... That's Cam Hardiman, and the title of his book. Cam joins me today sharing his experiences in Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police. Cam is diagnosed PTSD which largely stemmed from his time spent at the Victoria Police Air Wing over several years. Cam talks in incredible detail about his experiences when PTSD really set in and the effects it had on him.
Chatting with legends like Cam makes me feel 10 foot tall and bulletproof!

After I proposition Bobby for a 3-way with Mark LeBusque (Oi, get your mind out of the gutter I'm talking about a podcast) we get down to the business of banter as Bobby raises a story of someone asking the question "how do you allow other people to love you?", of course to which I respond "oh yeah, I totally get it." (naturally) And thus the conversation around love, attachment theory, fear and avoidance unfolds from there...
But what is love and how do we navigate it? What influences our attachment tendencies and when does this happen? Are our attachment styles fixed or can we evolve those bad boys into something a little more secure and less guarded?
Not a psychologist or attachment expert in sight, just two perfectly flawed humans diving into the conversations that count.

Would you rather be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond?
I'm all for leaping into that big pond and rubbing shoulders with the big fish myself. However, what happens to our perception of ourselves and our progress once we go ahead and immerse ourselves in that mighty vast pond?
This week I came across some stats on female podcasters and it had me reflecting on my own experience as a podcaster and the ebbs and flows of how I have felt about and viewed my journey along the way.
This is a punchy little banter about just that... and a hopefully encouraging 'go-get-it-sisters' to all the brilliant women out there doing, about to do, or wanting to do something great!

How many of us are out there screaming into the void? With so many platforms at our fingertips where we can all spread awareness, share knowledge and be heard, it's easy to fall into the trap of simply making noise rather than making an actual difference.
Josh Reid Jones is back for a second chat with me today because he's someone who I look up to greatly when it comes to making a noise ONLY when it makes a difference and generally walking his talk. He's the founder of the Just Be Nice Project and as a social impact professional and social entrepreneur Josh is prolific in sharing content that's not only relevant but a constant reminder about what really matters.
We shoot the breeze today around the delivery of hard truths, the benefit of hitting pause on our outrage, the nature of trust and love in our relationships and our lives.
Enjoy!

Ooh this episode is a doozy... I geek out on all things cause and effect, so when Dr Sandy MacQuarrie offered up a hearty conversation on his PhD research into the physiological health status of Paramedics and the correlation between health status, job performance and of course mental health, I was all ears (and mouth, cos I'm chatty of course).
A career paramedic (ground and flight) since 1992 along with senior management positions in EMS in Canada, Sandy's research stemmed from his own lived experience and a challenging decline in his own wellbeing. Once he got on top of that he has spent six years stepping into the world of academia (not his natural habitat, but thank #%@$ he did because this area of research is crucial to our first responders) researching the cause and effect of a paramedic's health status on their job performance and likewise, the effect of the job itself on a paramedic's health status. Sandy's findings are crucial to understanding, supporting and creating a better system for paramedics and first responders. And likely the rest of us too really!

Roll With The Punches is where we step into the ring and go toe to toe with the hard sh*t life throws our way.
Hosted by former boxing champ turned strength coach and speaker Tiff Cook, RWTP brings you big conversations with world-class guests about psychology, relationships, trauma, the brain, and the patterns that can make a bloody mess of our lives.
If you're curious about human behaviour, keen to challenge the stories you tell yourself, and want to understand why the hell you do what you do, you're in the right place. Tune in. Tiff's in your corner.
The goal? To question what you've always believed, understand yourself a little better, and turn those aha moments into actual change.
Because knowing better and doing better are two very different things.
And let's be honest... life's gonna keep throwing punches. We may as well learn how to roll with them.
