  • EP84 Managing Your 1440 Minutes | Craig Harper
    1440 minutes.
That's how many you get in a day.   That's how many I get in a day.   That's how many Bruce at the corner store gets in a day.
There's no 'time bank' where you can earn more, buy more or borrow someone else's.
This is an awesome chat with one of my favourite flannel wearing humans Craig Harper where we talk all things time.   Time perception... Time management... Time usage... Time optimisation...
And then of course, like the two f*ckers that can't keep on track that we are, we head off route talking all sorts of philosophical life, psychology and human stuff.   These largely unplanned chats are often my favourite episodes, I hope you enjoy!

  • EP83 Playing The Cards We're Dealt | Nick Reid

At Christmas I caught up with Nick Reid for the first time in 20 years since we were at school.  Over this time Nick has spread his wings and spent a number of years living in the UK.  He eventually returned to the homeland in Tasmania (Australia) together with his Polish wife and their children and set out on a whole new career opportunity in his 30's as a submariner for the Navy.

In 2018 Nick collapsed whilst riding his bike, only to wake up in hospital after having been put into an induced coma to control his seizure.  Three days later an egg sized tumor was removed from his brain, coming back with a Stage 3 diagnosis... Chemo, radiation, contemplation.

Today we chat about those 20 years Nick experienced and much about the reality of his most recent two years.   The past, the present, the future.  Most often perspectives we don't contemplate until we are personally reminded of the fragility of our human lives.

  • EP82 Friendship, Life's Healing Elixir | Erin Cotter-Smith & Gill Hicks

Erin Cotter-Smith & Gill Hicks. Two epic women. One epic friendship.

We heard from Erin and her personal experience with vicarious trauma from 15 years of researching 911 first responders. This layered upon a range of medical traumas she has endured, all whilst hurtling through life as a high achieving disaster medicine expert and academic who sits on the boards of many worthwhile foundations and organisations.

We haven't heard from Gill YET, but among a host of ah-f*cking-mazing attributes, stories and accolades Gill, the author, the speaker and the superstar also happens to be the last person pulled from the rubble in the 2005 London bombings. Gill emerged a double amputee, losing both of her legs... But not her spirit. In this episode we talk about just that.. the spirit, the resilience, the what-is-it-that gets us through the shit.

For these two warriors it was the very unique bond that was formed around a friendship between two people who through their own separate traumas and tough times, understood just how to support one another. There's a science to it that's for certain.

Loneliness has been proven to increase mortality rates 26-32%...

It kind of makes sense then to see friendship may just be our most powerful healing elixir.

  • EP81 Poo. The Antidote To Bipolar? (FMT) Fecal Microbiota Transplant | Jane Dudley
Could poo really be the antidote to an incurable mental illness? Sounds like a tough pill to swallow hey (they call them crapsules, actually) I mean who would even test such a theory anyway?
Jane Dudley, that’s who.  She'd taken enough sh*t in life for the last 18 years.  What's the harm in taking just a little more, she thought.
I stumbled across Jane as I searched for someone to speak with me on the topic of FMT (fecal microbiota transplant).  Someone to talk sh*t with me. Literal sh*t…  But when I found out that FMT was effective for treating Jane’s Bipolar 1 disorder I nearly fell off my stool (witty, aren't I just).
Jane suffered severe Bipolar 1 symptoms for 18 years since the age of 16.   Functionally disabling depression with occasional bouts of dangerous psychosis.   Attempting suicide multiple times (something she wasn't all too talented at, fortunately), Jane was thrown into psychiatric wards over a dozen times.  Admitting that together with her partner, Alex she had begun to open the conversation around how to perhaps end her life without Alex going to jail, should they continue to fall short of finding some relief Jane's suffering.  Little did they know, the answer was right there… they were literally sitting on it!
Jane went to work with DIY (yep, that's do-it-yourself) Fecal Microbiota Transplants at home after acquiring sufficient clinical research papers and evidence to feel she understood the process and safe execution.   (Dear listener, I feel we must say ‘please don’t try this at home’... I also feel it's unlikely I need to say it!)
Four years symptom free and three years medication free, (simply unheard of) Jane is the first in the world.  There are 8 such cases of success and clinical trials underway, in which Jane in getting heavily involved.  The world of gut health and it's relationship with our mental health is still so young and not yet well understood and in many area's clinically proven, but something worth taking into consideration.  I mean let's be honest... we've been saying 'we are what we eat' for years.  So it kind of makes sense.
Next time someone tells you to 'stick it up your bum', maybe it's better advice than they think!
    Enjoy...

  • EP80 Vicarious Trauma And Trouble Beyond The Rubble (9/11) | Erin Cotter-Smith
Erin Cotter-Smith is an Epidemiologist and Disaster Medicine Expert, an advocate for First Responder Mental Health and Wellbeing, a Board Director of World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine, an Ambassador for VicPol Mental Health and Wellbeing Committee, an Advisory Board Member for AFP Shield Project and a Board Member for The Code 9 Foundation.  (bit lazy, huh?)
We take a dive in this episode into the emotional aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the toll it continues to take, almost 20 years on, on the first responders and emergency service workers involved.  Not to mention the survivors, families, onlookers and now as we learn, even (and just as significantly) the researchers who are exposed to the realities and stories of those above mentioned lives.
Erin herself, is one of those researchers.  Developing vicarious trauma after 15 years of researching the a group of 9/11 first responders over 15 years to explore the long term impact of responding to the attacks she shares her experience and knowledge around what can often be a bit of a taboo topic.
As an athlete the idea made perfect sense to me.  Visualization is a powerful tool, used for physiological results...  so of course, immersing one's (extremely empathetic) self into the memories, experiences, lives and stories of humans involved in such a devastating events is going to produce similar physiological and psychological results..
Erin shares some insights into her experience with vicarious trauma, we talk about resilience, about passions and purpose, about the metaphors within life, about relationships, about the mind, about physiology.
There is no doubt whatsoever that Erin Cotter-Smith will be back behind this mic with me very soon indeed.

  • EP79 Demartini In A Dunce's Cap | Dr John Demartini

Sitting in class with a dunce's cap.  Dropping out of school at 13. Leaving home barely a teen to live on the streets, under bridges and in abandoned cars.

Who would have believed that these were statements  I would be including in the synopsis of a podcast introducing Dr John Demartini?  Pffffft, I know I sure didn't.

Dr Demartini foundered his own global research and education organisation, The Demartini Institute.  Not bad for a homeless dude with learning difficulties who couldn't read until 18 years old.  Now a world renowned authority in human behaviour and personal development,  Dr Demartini literally calls the world home, sailing his ship around the globe educating and speaking.

I invited Dr Demartini on the show because I myself have followed and learned from his strategies and resources for years now, but little did I know that he would also fit the Roll With The Punches theme so strongly, until I asked about his own journey.

Human behaviour, thinking, self-awareness, the stories we tell ourselves, values determination, perspective... these are all the things I thrive on conversations on.  And conversations on these we did have...

If ever there were a perfect episode to sign off on 2020... This is it.

  • EP78 Extreme Sports, Extreme Lessons | Lisa Tamati

Lisa Tamati, much like myself, doesn't do things by halves.

    She has raced 2,250km races.

She has ran a race for 64 hours straight (sure breaking my get-8-hours-sleep rule).

She has even crossed the unchartered-by-civilians Lybian Desert.

All in the name of 'fun' might I just add.

Lisa shares my intrigue and curiosity around the extreme lessons that extreme sports teach us about ourselves.

As an Athlete, Coach, Business Woman, Author, Speaker and Podcast Host, Lisa is somewhat of an expert in performance, mindset, physiology, anti-aging, alternative treatments, biology, epigenetics and bio-hacking.

Today we talk about a lot of these things, covered in parts of her own journey as an endurance athlete and as the daughter of an ill mother who's care Lisa took from the medical world and into her own hands, with incredible results.

There is so much to learn from this chat, you're going to want her back... don't worry, so do I.

  • EP77 My Dad | Ian Cook

He's been a business owner.  He's been bankrupt.

He's been a tumbleweed landing where the wind might care to blow him across the Australian outback.

He's pulled sheep shit from freshly shorn wool to put food on his plate, he's slept under the stars with holes in his socks.  He's been a son, a father, a husband, a brother, a friend, a student, a mentor, a rock and for me... a soulmate.

I love him.  You will too.

Ian Cook is my dad.  If you know me, you know him... we are a team.  I've told him to write a book, for he sure has many a story to tell.

From delivering letters across NW Tasmania to shearing sheep in outback Queensland and eventually working amongst the thick skinned on the docks in Melbourne...

Old E (as I often call him) has been around the block.

We offer up a page or two of his story from behind the mics...

    Enjoy

  • EP76 From Police Officer to Prison Officer | Anthony Cattermole
Anthony Cattermole spent 14 years in law enforcement with Victoria Police.  Have I ever mentioned my love for first responders..? :)
There's nothing I love more than shooting the breeze and learning about the lives of those who choose to serve to keep humanity safe and orderly.  I'm intrigued about how such roles can fundamentally change the way these humans might navigate the world we live in.  A world they see so differently to us... a world in which they are exposed to, and trained to manage, situations that might very well terrify the rest of us.   And that's just their 'normal'.
For the last 12 months Anthony threw his hat in the ring as a Corrections Officer at the prison.  Again, to be surrounded by an ecosystem that us sheltered civilians might struggle to wrap our heads around.  I'm sure there are stories he could tell that couldn't be told...  But I loved a little peek behind the bars, so to speak, into a world I sure don't care to step much closer to, myself!

  • EP75 Not Getting Fat For Christmas | Alison Wright

Here we are bunkering down for Christmas again...  Whatever that means for each of us.

For some it's joy, celebration, happiness, family, love, gratitude... for others it is stress, anxiety, family, loss, grief, lonliness...  And for the vast majority on either end of that scale it is kilo's, sugar, overeating, drinking too much, falling off the wagon, dropping good habits and developing hard to shake habits that for the average human comes with a 5-6kg consequence and a good 6 months of the new year to rectify.

So, Alison Wright is back to talk about how we can enjoy and indulge but manage the holiday season without getting all extreme on self loathing, ridiculous diets and physiological and emotional punishment that can quite often unfold for many.

Even us health and fitness focused humans are not exempt from the challenges that food can throw our way.  I hope ya'll enjoy this EP and take away some positive things to implement.
